COMING EVENTS

END-OF-COURSE STATE TESTING: APRIL 2019
Please be aware that the upcoming months of April and May will include five (5) days of mandated Ohio Department of Education
End-of-Course Testing. On each day, only the students testing in their graduation mandatory courses (English Language Arts 1,
English Language Arts 2, US History, US Government, Algebra 1, Geometry & Biology) will attend school at the designated testing
times. See the linked document below for each day of testing, the tests being administered and the time schedules for each. Regular
daily bus transportation times will be maintained in the mornings and afternoons like any other school day.
BMHS STATE END-OF-COURSE TESTS 2019 CALENDAR: Testing Calendar
All students enrolled in any of our English Language Arts 1 and 2, Geometry, Algebra 1, Biology, US Government, and
US History courses (regular, honors, CCP, AP, Ombudsman, online, etc…) are expected to arrive promptly for the graduation quali-
fying mandatory testing. Please note that on each of the indicated testing days, there are designated starting times for each of the
separate tests. On each of the days of testing, students are expected to arrive in time for each of
their scheduled test starting times.
Students and Parents please note:
The format of testing will be online (not paper/pencil).
Bring your own ear buds to listen to the test audio.
Cell phones must be collected and turned-off. (maintenance of test security and preservation of WiFi bandwidth capacity)
Ohio Department of Education testing resources: http://oh.portal.airast.org/users/students-and-families.stml
As a state of Ohio graduation mandate, in addition to the required academic course work and necessary accumulation of credits,
students must earn a total of 18 points attained through seven State mandatory End of Course Tests: Algebra 1, Geometry, English
Language Arts 1, English Language Arts 2, Biology, American History and American Government. Students can earn from 1-5
points on each of these Tests. To ensure students are well rounded, they must earn a minimum of 4 points in Math, 4 points in Eng-
lish/Language Arts, and 6 points across Science and Social Studies.
Advanced 5 points
Accelerated 4 points
Proficient 3 points
Basic 2 points
Limited 1 point
No Score Available 0 point
Not meeting the above criteria would result in a student not earning a graduation diploma. Refusing to participate in this Testing
will only result in a score of zero (0) and no accumulation of points towards the minimum 18 needed for graduation. This will not
be permitted without signed consent of the Parent/Guardian and Principal. Please see the Ohio Department of Education website
http://education.ohio.gov/Topics/Ohio-Graduation-Requirements/Graduation-Requirements-2018-and-Beyond for further details
regarding these newly mandated State of Ohio Graduation Requirements, practice Tests, and other pertinent resources.
Student and Staff PBIS Recognitions:
From a complimentary BMHS Colleague: “Transition Coordinator , Melissa Haskins-Berger’s proposal, Transition Plan-
ning- Not Just for High School! Strategies for ALL Grade Levels was selected for the 2019 Milestones National Autism Confer-
ence. She is scheduled to be a speaker at this conference on June 11, 2019 and will be presenting with Tabatha Devine, who is
the Transition Coordinator from Westlake City Schools. It is a distinguished honor to be selected as a presenter at this confer-
ence for the second year in a row. We are proud of Mrs. Haskins-Berger’s expertise and her generous willingness to share of it
not only with our BMHS students, families, and staff, but also with those of other school districts. Thank you and congratula-
tions!”
From another complimentary BMHS Colleague: “Kudos and gratitude is expressed for English Language Ar ts Teacher
and Forensics (Speech and Debate) Team Head Coach, Ryan Peoples. Continuing again this school year to make Berea-
Midpark High School the center of the high school Speech & Debate world in Northeast Ohio, Mr. Peoples displayed his Foren-
sics leadership by hosting both the 15th Annual Grindstone Invitational in January and then, in February, the OSDA Cleveland
District Tournament (which qualifies students to States). Bravo!”
From a gracious Community Partner: “Thank you SO much for your submission for the Tr i-C High School Rock Off
artwork contest. We had an overwhelming number of fantastic entries to go through and select down to one post, t-shirt and
CD cover design. One of the three winners is a student from your school. Again, thank you for all the wonderful work, and we
look forward to your submissions next year! Tri-C High School Rock Off artwork winner: Poster – Molly Stackhouse from
Berea-Midpark HS (Art teacher: Mr. Tom Conti). (Morgan Wright, Digital Marketing Coordinator, Live Nation-Cleveland)

STUDENTS WHO WANT TO USE THE LIBRARY/MEDIA CENTER DURING STUDY HALLS:
Any student who wants to use the Library/Media Center during their study halls, must sign up FIRST following the directions be-
low. If you do not sign up to use the Library, you will need to return to your study hall. Students are not permitted to have the
study hall monitor simply write a pass to the Library. The student needs to: login to the BCSD webpage, select BMHS High School,
then Library tab, select BMHS Study Hall Sign Ups on the left menu, sign in to your Google account and the calendar for the week
will appear. Students should select the date and period they would like to use the Library. Find the day of the week and click on
one of the numbered boxes which represent the period they want and place their name in that box
that will appear. Be sure to SAVE. If there are no boxes available when a student wants to come that
means all of the spots have been filled and the student must remain in their assigned study hall. The
number of spots available for each period varies.
STUDENT PARKING REGULATIONS
With our increased enrollment and the challenges posed by our construction, we are grateful for the pa-tience and cooperation that our students, parents, and staff have demonstrated during the busy times of arrival and dismissal. In order to best assure safe and effective student drop-off and pick-up, we ask that you comply with each of these expectations:
Only students with valid parking tags, for either BMHS or Roehm Athletic Complex, may park in the designated spaces of their assigned lots. Cars with-out valid parking tags are subject to being towed unannounced.
Student pedestrian crossing of streets is permitted only in the the designated cross-walk areas.
Buses only are permitted in the designated “flag pole” lot area directly in front of the building, during student arrival and dismissal times.
Drop-off & pick-up of students is permitted only in the designated school park-ing lot area – not on the streets of Bagley, Eastland, or Maple.
Vehicles which are entering & exiting the lot may do so only through the desig-nated areas and following the indicated traffic flow.
If you should have any questions or concerns, you are welcomed to contact our Main Office 216-898-8900.
Thank you for your continued cooperation!

FROM THE CLINIC: MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS
Twenty-two point two per cent (22.2 %) of American youth will have a diagnosable mental illness with
“serious impairment” at some point before they are eighteen years old. What are childhood mental health
disorders? Serious changes in the way children typically learn, behave, or handle their emotions, which
cause distress and problems getting through the day are some symptoms.
Monitor for the following changes in your child that may indicate a mental illness:
Sadness or withdrawal that lasts at least two weeks or severe mood swings
that cause problems in relationships at home or school.
Sudden loss of appetite, frequent vomiting or use of laxatives might indicate
an eating disorder.
Physical symptoms such as headaches and stomachaches rather than sadness
or anxiety.
Difficulty concentrating and intense feelings such as overwhelming fear for no reason, sometimes with a
racing heart or fast breathing.
Self-harm/cutting or burning oneself. Children also may develop suicidal thoughts or attempt suicide.
Use of drugs or alcohol to try to cope with their feelings.
Has trouble sleeping, including frequent nightmares.
Parents know their child the best. If you have concerns about the way your child behaves at home, in
school, or with friends, seek medical advice immediately. Talk to your child’s healthcare professional, school
counselor or visit National Institute of Mental Health’s Help for Mental Illnesses webpage
The following hotlines are available for immediate help:
National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK. Available 24 hours a day
