This report summarizes the characteristics of thestudents participating in the Social Learning Curriculum. Theinformation on these educable mentally retarded students includes:sex, age, IQ, tests upon which intelligence estimates are based, yearof test administration, physical or emotional handicaps, and thenumber of children considered socially disadvantaged. The format ofthe data is the same as in the report on the teachers'characteristics (SO 000 140) . A copy of the Students' Data Form isappended. INTRODUCTION

This report was based on data obtained from the Students' Data

Form (see Appendix A). The characteristics covered in the Students'

Data Form were: sex; age; I. Q. (or M.A. when I. Q. was not available);

the tests upon which the estimates of intelligence were based; the year

in which the tests were administered; unusual handicaps (in addition to

retardation); and the number of children who were socially disadvantaged.

Reports of handicaps such as neurological impairment or emotional dis-

turbance were based upon the evaluation of a specialist (e. g., neurolo-

gist, psychiatrist, psychologist, etc.). The estimate of whether a child

was socially disadvantaged was made by his teacher. The data were

coded and tabulated by a digital computer.

Two-hundred and forty-four of the 466 teachers contacted re-

turned the Students' Data Form. Unfortunately, 53 of the 244 completed

forms were filled out incorrectly and could not be utilized in the tabula-

tion. Thus, the present report is based upon a total of 191 field test

classes. The rate of return for each of the test sites is summarized in

Appendix B.

The results of the tabulation are presented separately for each

test site and the total field test network. The tabular data will serve

as a basis for further analysis of the Curriculum Evaluation to be

carried out in response to specific problems raised by the Curriculum

developers. Outstanding features of the present tabulations are sum-

marized at the end of the report.

SUMMARY AND REMARKS

The overall characteristics of children who participated in the 1968-

1969 field test can be summarized as follows:

1) Almost all of the children who participated in the field test were en-

rolled in public schools.

2) There were almost twice as many boys as there were girls.

3) Almost half of the children were considered socially disadvantaged.

There were also substantial numbers of children with speech disorders and

emotional disturbances.

4) Most of the children had an I.Q. of between 50 and 30. In most cases,

the I.Q. was based on tests administered within the last three years. The

intelligence tests used most often were, respectively, the Stanford-Bi.net

and the WISC.

5) Although the sample covered a wide range of chronological ages, most

of the children were seven to eleven years old.

In considering the characteristics of children in each individual test

site, the following exceptions should be noted in reference to the above

generalizations:

1) Chil:iren in the Rhode Island sample had a greater incidence of cerebral

palsy. Children in the Alaskan sample had a greater incidence of hearing

defects. Children in the Michigan sample had a greater incidence of other

physical handicaps.

2) The following test sites used the WISC rather than the Stanford-Binet

as the primary instrument for estimating I.Q.: Binghamton, Mt. Vernon,

Florida and Michigan.
