Figtrees sells for $5.35 million to private investorsThe Murray and Sue Murdoch-owned Figtrees

has been sold for $5.35 million in a joint venture

with Magic Millions and iThink Property, the

real estate agency run by former Magic Millions

auctioneer Clint Donovan.

The Hinterland property, which features

195 acres of land and three homes, has

been developed over the last 13 years by

the Murdochs and sold to private investors

yesterday.

In 2013, Galileo’s (Sadler’s Wells)

dominance in Europe, both on the track

and subsequently in the broodmare

band, prompted Coolmore to look East

Galileo mares to, namely the all-conquering

Japanese champion sire Deep Impact (Sunday

In Australia, likewise, in the years since

1990 when Arrowfield’s John Messara first acquired Danehill (Danzig)

to stand in the country, the gradual dominance of the stallion and his

prevailing sire sons in the proceeding years saw Arrowfield, in 2019, to

also look East to provide the sought-after outcross for their exceptionally-

talented pool of dominant Danehill-line mares.

Indeed, the prospect for

success of the cross can trace

back through his lineage, with

Maurice descending back to

Hail To Reason (Turn-To),

whose son Sunday Silence

crossed with Danehill mares

at a 36 per cent strike rate of

stakes winners to runners, and

included Australian Oaks (Gr 1,

2400m) winner Sunday Joy and

American Grade 2 winner Silent

Name.

Yet, in their headline

Japanese shuttler Maurice

(Screen Hero), he is showing the

potential of clicking far beyond

that, and his two contenders for this weekend’s J J Atkins Plate (Gr 1,

1600m) at Eagle Farm, out of a Tale Of The Cat (Storm Cat) and Invincible

Spirit (Green Desert) mare respectively, are testament to that, as the Beast

from the East seeks to claim a first success at the highest level.

“(The cross with Danehill-line mares) is exactly the reasoning behind

it,” said Arrowfield’s bloodstock manager Jon Freyer, on the operation’s

decision to shuttle Japanese stallions in 2019, and again in 2021 after a

year hiatus induced by the outbreak of Covid-19.

“But it’s not necessarily the Danehill lines. We thought the Danehill

lines would suit him and be very popular with breeders and would suit a

lot of our mares, but he’s been successful across the board.

“The horse that’s running in the J J Atkins, Port Louis, is out of a Tale

Of The Cat mare and the other one is out of an Invincible Spirit mare, so

there’s some very good blood there.

“We’re very positive about him and the market is positive about him

and we’ve just been inundated with bookings for him for the coming

season.”

Although both maidens, last-start BRC Sires’ Produce (Gr 2,

1400m) runner up Port Louis and BRC Champagne Classic (Gr 2,

1400m) second Invinsible Tears have the chance to claim Group 1

success tomorrow for Maurice, who scored his sixth individual winner

on Wednesday when the Julius Sandhu-trained Sharp Response won a

maiden at Sale.

ENOUGH SAID

HE’S (MAURICE) PROBABLY GOING TO SUIT A LOT OF THOSE (AUSTRALIAN) MARES, AND PHYSICALLY HE SUITS THEM AS WELL, HE’S A BIG STRONG HORSE, BUT YOU CAN MATCH HIM WITH A BIGGER MARE AND YOU GET AN ADMIRABLE RESULT. ON ALL COUNTS HE’S WORKING WITH A WIDE SPECTRUM OF MARES- JON FREYER

He, again, is out of a diverse bloodline

through Host (Hussonet) mare Marli Magic. While earlier in the spring,

and flying the flag for the Danehill-line mare, is the Peter and Paul

Snowden-trained Mazu, who won a maiden at Canterbury before running

third in the Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) in a bid to qualify for the

following week’s Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m).

“We thought he (Port Louis) was about the pick of all our Maurice’s

from that first crop,” said Freyer. “Katsumi Yoshida bought him privately

when the Easter live sale was cancelled. From day one Ciaron Maher was

giving us very good reports about him and and was very positive about

him, and his judgement’s been vindicated, here he is in a Group 1 and he

was probably a shade unlucky in the Champagne Stakes.

“The good thing is, he’s (Maurice) probably going to suit a lot of

those (Australian) mares, and physically he suits them as well, he’s a

big strong horse, but you can match him with a bigger mare and you get

an admirable result. On all counts he’s working with a wide spectrum

of mares.

“We’ve just finalised all our matings with our own mares and we’ll be

looking to send him around 44 mares this season, so we’re really getting

behind him.

“There’d be a good proportion of Danehill mares. When we balance

up our portfolio, obviously with the likes of The Autumn Sun, Snitzel,

Pariah and Showtime, we’re not sending a lot of the Danehill-line mares

to them, so they’re going to the Japanese horses and the likes of Shalaa

and Dundeel, so, I’d say it would be about 75 per cent, being mares with

Danehill blood.”

This season, Arrowfield have bolstered their Japanese sire ranks

with Admire Mars (Daiwa Major), a Group 1-winning juvenile, who

went on to score at the elite level over a mile in Japan and Hong

Kong.

“He’s an exceptional racehorse, a very good two-year-old, and

competed internationally in Hong Kong successfully,” said Freyer. “He’s

got a nice pedigree, he’s a very good looking horse. Daiwa Major we think

will work very well with Danehill mares, he has in Japan, and I think he’s

very competitively priced.

“We’ve recognised for some time that Japanese form and Japanese

bloodstock is of a particularly high calibre, and we wanted to use a certain

amount of it through the stud, with our broodmare band and obviously

with the stallions as well.

“We’ve seen all around the world, wherever Japanese horses have

competed, they’ve been remarkably successful, and now we’re seeing,

with the likes of Snowfall and Saxon Warrior before them, that with Deep

Impact they’re of a Group 1 standard in Europe.

“It would be foolish not to have an element of that in the stud and, if

the right opportunity comes along, we’d be happy to invest further, but

we’re very happy with what’s gone on so far.”

Heinrich’s Tears hope to prove Invinsible The only filly in Saturday’s J J Atkins field is the Gillian Heinrich-

trained Invisible Tears, who arrives into the race after a luckless ninth in

the BRC Sires’ Produce, and a second placing in the Champagne Classic,

one of three times she’s filled the runner-up spot in her five-start career.

For Heinrich, it would be a poignant success, with the Gold Coast

trainer having beaten cancer twice since 2015, five years after she saddled

Military Rose (General Nediym) to success in the Magic Millions 2YO

Classic (RL, 1200m).

“It’s been very exciting, and I’m actually looking forward to Saturday,

because I think the mile will really suit the filly. She got a little bit held

up last start, and although she was unplaced, it was a very good run. She

couldn’t get out when she needed to,” said Heinrich to ANZ Bloodstock

News.

“The Magic Millions win was my biggest win, but obviously the Group

1, for us as owners and for me as a trainer, would be really something, and

right there on the top of my list.”

Invinsible Tears was purchased by her daughter, Tayla, for $220,000

at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, and is the first foal out

of unraced German mare Networking (Invincible Spirit), who Badgers

Bloodstock purchased for £85,000 for Arrowfield Stud from the Godolphin

draft out of the 2017 Tattersalls July Sale. Networking is a half-sister to

Hong Kong sensation Pakistan Star (Shamardal).

“She’s just such a beautiful type. She’s got a really good shoulder, good

girth, good thigh, everything that we like in a horse,” added Heinrich.

“She’s put it together already as a two-year-old which is pretty good,

and I’m very happy with her.

“She’s looking for further a little bit down the line and I really think

she’ll be a better three-year-old, so whatever happens she’ll be going out

after today. I never really expected her to show up as a two-year-old, but

she kept measuring up and we just kept going.”

McDonald to ride AyrtonJames McDonald will take the ride on Ayrton

(Iffraaj) in the Gunsynd Classic (Group 3,

1600m) at Eagle Farm tomorrow. The three-

year-old, trained by Mick Price and Michael

Kent jr, lost his unbeaten status when second

over 1400 metres at the course two weeks

ago, meaning a re-route to this race rather

than the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m).

With usual partner Jamie Kah booked for

Melbourne, McDonald is happy to get the

nod. "I've watched him work, they've put up

a bit of footage but no, I haven't seen him.

Mick (Price) says he's pretty straightforward,

so I hope he's right. I'm sure he'll be fine,"

McDonald said on the Moody On The Mic

podcast. "The positive thing (is) he's had a

run at Eagle Farm, it's been a tricky track so

far, some go on it, some don't, so at least he's

had a run." McDonald is hoping for the same

fortune Kah had when she won the Black

Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) on

his usual mount Nature Strip (Nicconi). "I'm

hoping to do the same job … you never know,

I might try and keep this ride," he quipped.

Ayrton will start from barrier one and was

priced early as a $1.80 shot.

Melbourne race meetings to remain crowd freeRacing Victoria announced yesterday

morning that metropolitan meetings will

remain spectator-free until at least next

Thursday. The decision comes despite

the Victoria state government’s easing of

restrictions, which would allow up to 100

spectators on-course. Licensed premises

also remain closed to all but essential

individuals, but TABs and pub TABs will open

from today. "Following discussions with the

Melbourne Racing Club, racing spectator-

free at their upcoming meetings is the most

practical decision at this time, with the club's

preference to welcome spectators back once

larger numbers are approved,” said RV chief

executive Giles Thompson. Country racing

clubs will be allowed to have up to 150 people

in attendance, although the Swan Hill Jockey

Club is only allowing owners with runners.

"Following the further easing of restrictions in

regional Victoria from Friday, we are pleased

country clubs will have the opportunity to

welcome back up to 150 spectators on course,

however, this will be at the discretion of each

club in consultation with Racing Victoria

and Country Racing Victoria,” Thompson

continued.

Classique Legend to remain Down Under for lifeClassique Legend (Not A Single Doubt)

arrived home to Les Bridge’s Sydney stable

on Tuesday after quarantine in Hong Kong

and New Zealand. Owner Bon Ho said he has

no intention of moving him again but not did

not rule out taking part in overseas races if the

gelding returns to the peak form that saw him

win The Everest (1200m) last spring. "I think

Classique Legend will probably stay in Sydney

for the rest of his life," Ho told Racing.com. "If

the opportunity arises, and the horse matures

a bit further, we never know, I might consider

at that time sending him to Japan or Dubai for

one race.” Ho transferred the five-year-old to

Caspar Fownes’ Sha Tin stable in the hope of

capitalising on a weak sprinting division there,

but a rushed prep saw him finish 11th in the

Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) in December.

The grey then bled when

preparing for a late-

season return. "I wish I

didn't do it because it's

seven months gone," Ho

said. "The decision at the

time was made based on the

horse (being able to) settle down in Hong Kong,

like Southern Legend. Based in Hong Kong, the

horse would be able to move to other places

more readily and easily. We could never know

at the time whether the horse would adapt to

Hong Kong.”

All About Eve to get breaks in Elvstroem ClassicAll About Eve (Star Turn) flashed home for

a head second behind Magic Max (Magnus)

a fortnight ago and trainer Andrew Noblet

is hoping for a similar performance in the

$100,000 VOBIS Gold Elvstroem Classic

(1300m) at Swan Hill today, but with a bit

of luck to boot. "She was a touch unlucky. I

was rapt with the way she closed off though,"

Noblet told Racing.com. "She just ended

up in an ordinary spot, through no fault of

Daniel's (Stackhouse), the run was there for

a second and then it wasn't, when she was

going sideways, they were going forwards. It

was a little bit her fault, she got a bit distracted

down in gate one and missed the kick a bit,

which brought her undone and things didn't

play out from there.” That latest effort, which

sees her listed as a $1.90 shot for this test,

followed a victory on debut at Bendigo. The

$110,000 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling

Sale graduate could be in for a $76,000 pay

day if successful this time. “She has come out

of the run in very good order and should get

every chance,” Noblet added.

Savatoxl yet to be passed fit for StradbrokeSavatoxl (Kuroshio) must pass a vet check this

afternoon to ensure he makes the field for the

Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm tomorrow.

The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained gelding

failed to satisfy Queensland Racing Integrity

Stewards following an examination yesterday.

Savatoxl failed an initial examination prior to

his last race, the Kingsford-Smith Cup (Gr 1,

1300m) two weeks ago, only to be passed fit.

Vorster set for Stradbroke on SavatoxlBarend Vorster is looking to seal a Group 1 double

aboard Savatoxl, should the gelding be passed

fit for the Stradbroke Handicap tomorrow. The

South African partnered Savatoxl to victory in The

Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) at Morphettville last

month before being undone by a wide draw when

a close sixth in the Kingsford-Smith Cup last time.

“He’s done really well and obviously that Group

1 was a good win for him," Vorster told Racing.

com. "Then we went up to Queensland and drew

the outside car park and had to do a little bit of

work across. I still felt he really finished his race

off strong and I felt his best work was the last little

bit, so I feel going into the Stradbroke, obviously

1400 metres, I’m not very worried about stepping

up and that little bit of extra ground.” Savatoxl has

drawn 13 of 21 this time and Vorster is hoping he

will be able to get across and find the fence. "He’s

got an inclination of leaning to the inside a bit,

that’s why he’s really enjoyed, when I’ve won on

him those two times, that he’s got over, used his

natural speed and got to the fence, he just really

loves running that way," he added. The former

Singapore champion is the stable rider for the

McEvoys, having moved to Adelaide two and a

half years ago.

Orman out to redeem in StradbrokeJimmy Orman is leading the way in the

Queensland jockey premiership and the young

hoop will attempt to bag a first Group 1 win when

he rides Niccanova (Nicconi) in the Stradbroke

Handicap. "I think if you ask anyone who's lived

in Queensland, what race they'd like to win in

Queensland, they'd say the Stradbroke, because

it's our iconic race. It would mean a lot to me if

I could win it,” Orman told Racing.com. Horse

and rider finished a close third in last year’s race

behind Tyzone (Written Tycoon) under 53.5

kilograms and Orman hopes his weight of 54

kilograms this time will pay off, with the rider

reporting his mount, successful in the Victory

Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) first-up this prep, to be in

good heart after finishing less than two lengths

tenth of 15 in the Kingsford-Smith Cup last time.

"He's going pretty well, he's going pretty good,"

Orman continued. "Last time out, he drew a tricky

(gate), got caught wide, had a bit of cover but he

was wide, he just can't win, well he can, but not

in a Group 1 race when he's caught wide, three

or four wide for the trip, he's the sort of horse that

needs a bit more of a suck run than that. He won

the Group 2 race first-up, so I think he might be

going a bit better, to be honest."

Berry Wild about Stradbroke ride Tommy Berry is heading to Eagle Farm in search

of his first Stradbroke success aboard second

favourite Wild Planet (Animal Kingdom) for Team

Hawkes. "Stradbroke day is the biggest day for

Queensland racing and when you get offered one

of the favourites in the race, it's a hard one to knock

back," said Berry, who trails James McDonald in the

Sydney premiership. "If I was a bit closer to James,

maybe four or five behind him, I probably wouldn't

have gone. But being ten behind at the moment, it's

going to be quite hard to peg James back anyway.

It would be more disappointing to miss out on a

Stradbroke winner and not win the premiership

as well, so I thought I'd try to win one and hope for

the other." Wild Planet will tackle the Stradbroke

second-up and off a four-week break, having

posted a fast-finishing second to Eduardo (Host)

in the Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1200m). Despite

a tough draw in barrier 15, Berry is confident he

might have found the horse to break his Stradbroke

drought. "When you look at the sprinters I've ridden

in the past, whether it be Chautauqua, Pierata or

Exceedance, horses like that that I've been aligned

with, they've been good horses over the spring and

the autumn so they haven't really got to a race like

the Stradbroke," Berry added.

Neasham confident about Zaaki in Q22All Annabel Neasham wants from Zaaki

(Leroidesanimaux) in The Q22 (Gr 2, 2200m) at

Eagle Farm tomorrow is a repeat of his recent

Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) performance. "If

he turns up like he did for the Doomben Cup, I

think something's going to have to really jump

out of the box," the trainer told Racing.com.

"We're going up in trip for the first time to that

distance and it's on a different track, but having

said that, he's certainly not gone backwards

from that last run.” The six-year-old has gone

three weeks since his last start, having followed

a pattern previously of two weeks between

contests. "He's bouncing,” she continued. “He

galloped at Doomben on the course proper on

Tuesday and he was having a buck and (he)

tries to whip around, and that's when you know

that he's feeling well, he's certainly more like

a two-year-old than a six-year-old." Neasham

confirmed the British import will go to the

paddock for a spell after the weekend with a

view to targeting the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) in

the spring, for which he is the $4.20 favourite.

Mirage Dancer heads northMirage Dancer (Frankel) was an autumn

carnival disappointment in Sydney, running

unplaced in the Tancred Stakes (Gr 1, 2400m)

and Chairman’s Quality (Gr 2, 2600m), but

co-trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young

are hoping tomorrow’s Q22 will be the starting

point for a better winter in Queensland for the

British import. "He doesn't enjoy being out in

the paddock spelling, so he's just been ticking

over in work, had a couple of jump-outs, and

it was either basically hang around for the next

couple of months in Melbourne doing nothing

with him, waiting for the spring, or get him up to

(Brisbane) and give him a couple of runs, races

like the Caloundra Cup and that may suit him,”

Busuttin told Racing.com. The handler believes

Zaaki will take all the beating but expects

Mirage Dancer, winner of the Metropolitan (Gr

1, 2400m) last October, to be in the mix if he

produces his best. "I think he's just under that

top notch of horses," Busuttin continued. "He

came here off a high benchmark and ran third

in a Caulfield Cup, so he's been right up there

in the weights and a bit hard to place. He gave

the owners a big thrill in the Caulfield Cup and

a run in the Melbourne Cup and then won the

Group 1, so we can't ask any more of the horse."

Spirit Ridge on the right track for success

Mark Newnham is not running scared of boom

horse Zaaki despite his odds. Newnham, who

saddles Spirit Ridge (Nathaniel) in opposition,

found out the hard way that not all horses handle

Eagle Farm when Moreton Cup (Gr 2, 1200m)

favourite Splintex (Snitzel) failed to cope with

the circuit last Saturday. And if Zaaki does not

reproduce his breathtaking Doomben Cup

win, he has no doubt Spirit Ridge, winner of the

Premier’s Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) at the track last time,

is the horse that can pounce. "The thing with Zaaki

is, if he takes that Doomben Cup form to that

race on Saturday, he should win it," Newnham

said. "But quite often you see horses off big peak

performances tend to be a little bit flat at their

next start and he had a huge peak the other day,

and he is going to a track that doesn't suit all

horses. (Spirit Ridge) is a really genuine horse. The

biggest tick he's got going into Saturday's race is

he has performed at Eagle Farm and I think nearly

all the others, including the favourite, have not."

Newnham is happy to press onto the race after

originally thinking the Premier's Cup might have

been Spirit Ridge's final campaign run. "I had a

ride on him last week when I was up there and he

came through the race really well," he added.

Morrish has high hopes for Mobs MettleChouxting The Mob (Jimmy Choux) will be

aiming to bounce back from a second serious

injury when he returns to the races over 1800

metres at Sandown tomorrow. The Simon

Morrish-trained seven-year-old fractured a hind

leg at trackwork in 2018 and returned, only to pick

up a tendon injury when finishing third in last

year’s Adelaide Cup (Gr 2, 3200m). "We decided

to give him the best chance, so we sent him down

to Lee Evison, the tendon guru, where he spent

nine months doing all the rehab work,” Morrish

told Racing.com. "It's a pretty arduous campaign

he puts them through, so he had two months in

the paddock after that, but he's been back in work

with me for four months and now we're off to

the races.” The handler has given the seven-time

winner plenty of work to test his mettle ahead of

his comeback. "He's had three trials - two over

1000 metres where a horse like him can't even

tack on and then we took him to St Arnaud last

week and gave him a strong 1600-metre trial,

which he won. At this stage, all the signs are very

good." The trainer plans on a light winter for his

charge, and, if he comes through, he will look at

late spring targets, with the Sandown Cup (Listed,

3200m) in November an option.

Spell for ArgentiaArgentia made a big impression when winning on

debut at Flemington last Saturday and that means

big plans are in the offing after a break for the well-

bred filly, who is by the great Frankel (Galileo)

out of four-time Group 1 heroine Princess Coup

(Encosta De Lago). "I'm glad she won a metro

race on debut and now we can really look to target

races over further in the spring with prize-money

in the bank," Sam Freedman, who co-trains with

his father Anthony Freedman, told Racing.com.

"She's gone out to Mitchell Park for not really a

spell so to speak, just because the weather is so

ordinary, so she will be boxed at night to keep her

looking well and keep her active." He added that

the spring plan would likely be the Atlantic Jewel

(Listed, 1200m), Thousand Guineas Prelude (Gr

2, 1400m) and Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m),

followed by the Empire Rose (Gr 1, 1600m) if

all goes well. "It's all a long way away and that's

aiming high but hopefully she can get there,” he

noted. The initial aim for Argentia had been the

Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) but sore shins

put paid to that and the extra time was beneficial.

"She's out of a mare that won four Group 1s and

most of them were at 2000-metre plus and, by

Frankel, we kept sort of pinching ourselves and

thought, 'be patient',” he added.

Big things expected of Verne Early this season Annabel Neasham had Verne

(Snitzel) pegged as the most likely of her young

team to front up in the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr

1, 1200m) but the colt didn’t make his debut until

May 19, when an unlucky second to In The Congo

(Snitzel) on the Kensington track. He followed

that with a dominant Warwick Farm win two

weeks later and will attempt to follow-up in the

Fujitsu General Handicap (1200m) at Randwick

tomorrow. “I’ve always had a really big opinion

of him. I originally thought he was going to be

my Slipper horse but he just had a setback and

didn’t make it,’’ Neasham told Racing NSW. “He’s

come back stronger after a short break and I’m

expecting him to run really well then we can put

him away for a break and bring him back for the

spring if we think he is up to it.” Brodie Loy is set to

ride the $4.40 chance who has been a bit toey pre-

race previously, while Neasham is not worried

about juice in the track. “The Snitzels tend to

enjoy it and I’d be surprised if he doesn’t handle it.

He’s always struck me as a horse that quite enjoys

getting his toe in and that’s the reason I left him

here instead of going to Queensland.”

Waterhouse could deny Bowman milestone Group 1 winnerHugh Bowman will attempt to pocket his 100th

Group 1 win in the J J Atkins (Gr 1, 1600m) at

Eagle Farm tomorrow aboard $4.80 chance

Port Louis (Maurice), but must contend with

the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained

market leader Converge (Frankel). Only the

great George Moore, Damien Oliver and Jim

Cassidy have achieved the Group 1 century

but while Bott believes Bowman and Port

Louis are the big threats to his stable’s main

hope, he is also exuding confidence. “I think

Port Louis is probably our biggest danger but

Hugh (Bowman) might have to wait another

day for his next big win,” Bott told Racing.com.

Converge, an unlucky second behind Tiger

Of Malay (Extreme Choice) in the BRC Sires’

Produce (Gr 2, 1400m) last time, will break from

barrier five under Tim Clarke. “He was a bit

unlucky in the Sires’ when he got further back

than we expected and his options were limited,”

Bott added. “He got caught in an awkward

position on the home turn but he did well to

make up so much ground.” The stable will also

field Volcanic Rock (Hinchinbrook), who was

impressive when winning the Phoenix Stakes

(Listed, 1500m) at Eagle Farm last weekend.

Snowdens opt for three-pronged Dane Ripper attack

Peter and Paul Snowden will saddle up three

runners in the Dane Ripper Stakes (Gr 2,

1300m) at Eagle Farm with Jen Rules (Redoute’

Choice) looking to bow out as a Group 2 winner.

The five-year-old, who has won four of her 28

starts and placed in five black-type races, will

line up alongside stablemates Dame Giselle (I

Am Invincible) and Reelem In Ruby (Pierro)

in tomorrow’s race, which is likely to be her

final racetrack appearance. "She will probably

go to stud after this run so rather than run in a

benchmark race, she'll have a go for glory. We

will try to go out on a winning note if we can,"

Peter Snowden said. Jen Rules finished a close

fourth to Love You Lucy (Love Conquers All)

in the corresponding race 12 months ago and

placed in the Hawkesbury Crown (Gr 3, 1600m)

behind Dane Ripper favourite Sweet Deal

(Casino Prince) two starts ago. The Tattersall's

Tiara (Gr 1, 1400m)-bound Dame Giselle is the

Snowdens’ leading hope after being beaten less

than two lengths by Vega One (Lope De Vega)

in the Kingsford-Smith Cup. "She is probably

the pick of those three. She's going really well,

she's drawn the right gate, it was a really good

run the other day and she has come on nicely

from that," Snowden said. Reelem In Ruby will

have to overcome the outside barrier in the

field of 16.

Trainer to watch Mongolian Marshal from homeAdelaide-based Stuart Gower has sent

Mongolian Marshal (High Chaparral) to

Melbourne for the Ladbrokes Bet Ticker

Handicap (1800m) at Sandown tomorrow.

But the handler will not make the trip himself

for fear he will be forced to undergo a 14-

day quarantine when he returns home, even

though restrictions between Victoria and

South Australia are due to relax this weekend.

The Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra

stable will saddle the gelding, just as they did

when he won the Kyneton Cup (2000m) last

November. "I'd rather send him over this week

and then hopefully we'll freshen him up and

run him in the Winter Championship Final

(at Flemington) in three weeks. Hopefully I

can come over for that one, at least," he said.

Mongolian Marshal scored a narrow last-start

win under the re-booked Brett Prebble over

1600 metres at Flemington on May 22. The

prospects of a heavy Sandown track don't hold

any fears for Gower. "He's won three in the soft

in New Zealand and you'd think their soft

would nearly be our heavy," he continued. "I

would have preferred another mile race, but

there wasn't anything suitable. You either run

in a 1400-metre next week at Flemington, but

I think this suits better as he's then got three

weeks to freshen up back to the mile of the

Winter Championship Final."

Fitter Fituese to rebound at RandwickA missed barrier trial proved to be more crucial

than John Thompson had hoped when Fituese

(Deep Field) over-raced from her outside draw

and faded to fifth when first-up in the Ortensia

Stakes (Listed, 1100m) last time, but he is

confident his smart mare can atone in the Bob

Charley AO Stakes (Listed,1100m) at Randwick

tomorrow. "I ran out of time to give her a second

trial so she went into it off one trial," Thompson

said. "I did want her ridden a bit quieter, but

she just raced a bit fresh three-deep outside the

leaders and she just got tired basically.

So I didn't run her again, I trialled her. We rode

her a bit quieter and she trialled super. She will

be ridden a bit quieter on Saturday and I reckon

you'll see a different horse." Rachel King has

ridden Fituese in nine of her 12 starts and is

the only jockey to have won on her but Brenton

Avdulla will partner the mare for the first time.

"It will be interesting to see how she goes for

Brenton, he's her new rider because Rachel is in

Queensland," Thompson continued. "She just

needs a bit of luck from the draw on Saturday,

she is going super."

Adelong aiming for first stakes successTrainer Brad Widdup says Jay Ford ‘nailed’ his last

steer on talented mare Adelong (Medaglia D’Oro)

and is looking for a similar performance from both

jockey and horse in the Bob Charley AO Stakes

(Listed, 1100m) at Randwick tomorrow. Widdup

would prefer a better barrier draw for another

shot at a stakes win, following Listed placings at

Hawkesbury and Rosehill. The five-year-old won

the At Sea Handicap (1100m) two weeks ago at the

same track and distance, holding off Wandabaa

(Wandjina), who she meets on identical weight

terms. “Things fell her way a bit there the other

day,’’ Widdup told Racing NSW. “He nailed the

ride, it was a perfect ride, there was good speed

in the race and she was able to freewheel up there

on the speed and it suited her. I think she gained

a lot of confidence out of it. It really suited her the

other day and drawn out there a little bit and with

good speed it really helps her.”

Mimosas bids to remain unbeatenTrainer Clayton Douglas says it was good to get in

the good books of his future mother-in-law with the

debut win of Mimosas (Squamosa) at Flemington.

Mimosas is owned by Karen Kah, the mother of

Douglas' fiancee and Melbourne's leading rider

Jamie Kah. Kah will be aboard her mother's horse

in the Clanbrooke Racing Handicap (1000m) at

Sandown tomorrow. "Having won his first start it

has taken the pressure off, so I'm happy with that,"

Douglas told RSN. "It's a good family story with

Karen owing him, me training him, Jamie doing

all the work on him, we broke him in ourselves

and he won his first start at Flemington. So far, so

good." Mimosas was a $20,000 yearling purchase

in Tasmania having been selected by Douglas'

uncle, Rod, a former trainer and racing manager

for Jonathon Munz. Douglas said there had been

some offers for Mimosas following his debut win,

but he said Karen was happy to continue racing

him. "He doesn't owe us anything. He's a nice

horse to have around the stable and hopefully he

can progress into a nice three-year-old," Douglas

said. The trainer expects the wet conditions to

favour Mimosas. "We've done a fair bit of work with

him on wet and he seems to get through it nicely,

so I'm not scared to run him on a heavy track on

Saturday," he added.

She’s God To You to bypass Belmont GuineasDarren Taylor experienced his first feature

race as a trainer last Saturday when She’s God

To You (Playing God) ran a credible third in

the Raconteur Stakes (Listed, 1400m) but has

elected against running the filly in next week’s

Belmont Guineas (Listed, 1600m). Taylor

believes a softer assignment in the Dream Horse

In Cinemas Handicap (1400m) at Belmont Park

tomorrow is a better option for the three-year-

old. "She is jumping out of her skin and I think

backing up on the weekend gives us a better

chance of winning than going into the Belmont

Guineas," Taylor told The Races WA. "I think this

is a more winnable race when you consider the

quality of horses that will go into the Belmont

Guineas. You would imagine Bob Peters and

Adam Durrant will have runners in the race.

And although I'm confident she can run out

a strong mile, 1400 metres is also her forte.

While she is going well I thought we may as well

back up rather than wait a fortnight before the

Guineas. This race looks a better option and she

has jagged a good barrier."

Moody and Parnell defend Brisbane CupPeter Moody and Racing Queensland chief

executive Brendan Parnell have leapt to the

defence of the Brisbane Cup (Gr 2, 3200m)

in the wake of Glenn Boss’s suggestion that

it should be scrapped if it is not beneficial to

turnover or promotion. “We want to build and

grow stayers in this country," Moody said on

his Moody On The Mic podcast. "We've got

about five feature two-mile races in Australia,

I don't think that's too many. We've got about

145 feature 1000-metre to 1600-metre races in

Australia, surely five two-mile races aren't too

many." Boss’s comments included his view

that there are already enough two-mile races

for the pool of horses available to complete,

and came after the race attracted only seven

runners for this year’s reversion to the race’s

original 3200-metre distance for the first time

since 2006. “We have a multi-year view of the

Brisbane Cup,” Parnell told RSN. “We will

give it at least three years before we come to

any thoughts about whether it’s warranted

maintaining it.”

Vitek joins Ridgmont Farm hierarchy

Jakub Vitek has been appointed as Ridgmont

Farm's yearling manager, the first major

staffing acquisition made since the Andrew

Dunemann-led partnership bought the

rebranded Hunter Valley stud earlier this year.

Vitek, the former assistant yearling manager

at Arrowfield Stud, will assume the important

role at the nearby Ridgmont Farm, which

was previously known as Glastonbury Farms.

Dunemann was delighted that Vitek, 29, had

joined the team ahead of the 2022 yearling sale

series. "When the article ran in ANZ saying that

we were looking for a yearling manager, I got

four phone calls from four people with no ties to

each other who said, 'if you want to really make

a difference you should try and get Jakub',"

Dunemann said yesterday. "I was downtown

(in Scone) one day and ran into a few of the

Arrowfield people, I asked for his number, gave

him a call and away we went. It's great for us as

he's ready to step up to be the boss and that is

probably what enticed him to come to us. We

want to sell high-quality yearlings and I think

Jakub coming on board really helps us do that."

King Magnus aiming for third first-up winThe task facing King Magnus (Magnus) in his bid

to remain unbeaten in first-up appearances has

not been lost on his co-trainers Robbie Griffiths

and Mathew De Kock. King Magnus makes his

return in the Ladbroke It Handicap (1300m) at

Sandown tomorrow but has to overcome barrier

17. "He is two-from-two first-up but in lower-level

so it's a bit different going to this race," Griffiths

said. "But he's had a nice couple of trials and

the videos of his gallops have been good. Mat's

happy with him at home, but drawing barrier

17, that makes his task of winning three-from-

three first-up a little tougher. He's got to return

to racing and he's going well so I think he'll give

us a pleasing run, but it's just going to be much

tougher from that draw.” The five-year-old scored

on debut in a Moe maiden in January last year

and at his only other first-up assignment scored

in Class 1 company at Pakenham last November.

Importantly, that win was on soft ground and

the likely heavy conditions that the Sandown

meeting will be run under should hold no fears.

"It is his third campaign and being 77-rated, we

want to see where he can get to this time around,"

Griffiths added. King Magnus will be ridden by

Lewis German who will take two kilograms from

the gelding's 56.5 kilogram impost.

Egan banned for striking horse in barriersStewards at Sale handed Billy Egan a two-week

ban after the rider struck his mount Wine

O’Clock (Roc De Cambes) several times while

in the barrier during racing on Wednesday.

Egan, who was unable to offer an explanation,

struck the Patrick Payne-trained gelding once

with his fist and four times with an open hand

after he became restless before the start of the

1419-metre maiden. Stewards took into account

his guilty plea and past record when sidlining

him for 14 meetings, with his suspension

commencing at midnight on Sunday.

Edmonds fined $2000Racing NSW stewards have fined trainer Shane

Edmonds $2000 for a Facebook post in which he

threatened jockeys in general and made comments

about the race ride of a claiming apprentice aboard

a horse he trained at Muswellbrook last Sunday.

Edmonds pleaded guilty to a charge under AR228(d)

that he posted a video to the social media platform

which contained offensive and/or threatening

material towards the apprentice, licensed jockeys

and Racing NSW staff responsible for training

apprentice riders.

Inspection at Dubbo this morningRacing NSW stewards will inspect the track at

Dubbo at 6am this morning ahead of today’s

scheduled meeting. Yesterday’s inspection

rated the track a Heavy 10.

Kamaruddin takes apprentice challengeJoe Kamaruddin was in red-hot form at New

Plymouth on Thursday when taking out the

apprentice jockeys challenge. He opened

his account with a win aboard the Robbie

Patterson-trained Swiss Kitty (Swiss Ace) in

the 1200-metre maiden before going on to win

aboard stablemate Dame Vera (Niagara) in the

NZB Insurance Pearl Series Race (1400m). He

closed his account with victory in the last race

on the card aboard the Darrell Hollinshead-

trained Lord Valentine (Rip Van Winkle), giving

him a treble and the apprentice challenge

title. Kamaruddin now sits on 28 wins for the

season and he was pleased with his success on

Thursday. “I have to thank all the trainers and

owners who have supported me today,” he said.

“I was able to ride some nice horses and it was

a lucky day today.” It was also a special day for

fellow apprentice jockey Jeetesh Mudhoo, who

recorded his first win from his first raceday ride

when victorious aboard Jane O’ (Niagara) in the

Dave Brophy Memorial Maiden (1600m).

HK: Horses for HKJC International Sale paradedThe 22 horses catalogued for the Hong Kong

International Sale later this month paraded

at a media photo call at Sha Tin racecourse

yesterday. The catalogue of unraced youngsters

features a French-bred colt by Frankel

following a light breeze-up at the track at 10am

on June 19.

JPN: Deirdre in foal to Wootton BassettTrainer Mitsuru Hashida has revealed to media

in Japan that his former stable star Deirdre

(Harbinger) is in foal to Wootton Bassett

(Iffraaj). The globe-trotting mare won the

Shuka Sho (Gr 1, 2000m) in 2017 and added a

second top-level win in the Nassau Stakes (Gr 1,

1m 2f) at Goodwood in 2019. Deirdre is a great-

granddaughter of Sonic Lady (Nuerye), winner

of the Irish 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m), Sussex

Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and Prix du Moulin (Gr 1,

1600m).

206 for DubawiDubawi (Dubai Millennium) sired his 206th

individual stakes winner when his daughter

Creative Flair (3 f ex Hidden Gold by Shamardal)

took the Abingdon Stakes (Listed, 1m 2f) at

Newbury yesterday under William Buick. The

Godolphin-raced runner made all, racing a

touch keenly early in a first-time hood, and held

off the determined challenge of second-placed

Lilac Road (Mastercraftsman) by half a length,

despite wandering slightly off a true line in the

final furlong. Vesela (Frankel) was three and a

quarter lengths behind in third as the Charlie

Appleby-trained winner landed her third

success at her fifth start. Creative Flair’s dam

Hidden Gold (Shamardal), who was a Listed

winner over a mile and five furlongs and placed

third in the Lonsdale Cup (Gr 2, 2m) at York,

is a half-sister to Group 2 winner Masterstroke

UK: Amo to the rescue as Goresbridge top lot deal falls throughThere has been a dramatic twist in the tale of

the record-breaking top lot at the Tattersalls

Ireland Goresbridge Breeze-Up Sale, with the

six-figure youngster having been returned

by the purchaser and subsequently bought

privately by Alex Elliott on behalf of Kia

Joorabchian's Amo Racing. The colt, a son

of Dark Angel (Acclamation) and the Listed-

placed Venturous Spirit (Arch), was pinhooked

by Jerry Horan's Paragon Bloodstock for

just €6,000 before being reoffered through

Dolmen Bloodstock in Newmarket. A hugely

impressive breeze saw the youngster's value

soar, and after a prolonged bidding duel it was

Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock who

went to an auction-record price of £410,000,

leaving Elliott and Joorabchian to fill the role

of underbidder. However, when the transaction

fell through, an outcome permitted under the

Tattersalls Ireland conditions of sale, Elliott

was approached by the vendor and a private

agreement was reached at an undisclosed

sum. Elliott said: "We think he's a special colt

and we tried to buy him for a lot of money in

the ring. I know Richard Brown was gutted that

he couldn't go through with the sale. We were

happy to pick up the pieces at a reduced rate

and with a bit of luck we'll be rewarded."

The Murray and Sue Murdoch-

owned Figtrees has been sold for

$5.35 million in a joint venture

with Magic Millions and iThink

Property, the real estate agency run by former

Magic Millions auctioneer Clint Donovan.

The Hinterland property, which features

195 acres of land and three homes, has

been developed over the last 13 years by

the Murdochs and sold to private investors

yesterday.

“We’ve been friends with the Murdochs for

15 years and they chose us to do the marketing

for the property and we were lucky enough to

find a buyer today,” said Donovan, principal of

iThink Property Gold Coast.

“The price was $5.35 million, after some

negotiations, and they chose us to market it

because of our network of buyers.

“The buyer is a private investor from

Brisbane, and wasn’t actually in the

thoroughbred industry, but will be for the next

years, and they’re going to run a commercial

operation out of Figtrees. Their intention is

to provide a subsidiary service of some kind,

spelling horses, foaling down mares and the

like.

“For the Murdochs, they’re at an age where

they don’t need to work anymore. They’ve been

wonderfully successful in the thoroughbred

industry, but they’re ready to hand over the

reins.

“It’s a beautiful thoroughbred facility, with

three homes and significant improvements to

the facilities.”

Among the high-class horses to have

been sold by the Murdoch’s Fig Tree

Thoroughbreds is Hong Kong Group 1

winner Ivictory (Mossman) as well as Listed

winner and recent Kingsford-Smith Cup

(Gr 1, 1300m) runner-up Jonker (Spirit Of

Boom).

Captivant JOAN FARAS

Cast your eyes over Group 1

winning two-year-old Captivant

(Capitalist) at the moment and

he could easily be mistaken for a

high-level equestrian horse.

The valuable colt and future hope for the

Newgate Farm stallion roster is currently doing

some off-season training with top eventing

rider Blair Richardson at his property at Scone

and is relishing the experience.

“He is a beautiful horse to ride. I look at him

and think he has a lot of scope. The first couple

of days here he was above the bit but he is a

very intelligent horse and now he’s going like I

could do a one-day event on him. He could do a

dressage test, he’s working very well on the flat,”

said Richardson.

Richardson broke in Captivant and is so

enamoured with the big, elegant dark bay, who

stands 16.2 hands high, that he openly admits

it will be hard to hand him back over to the

Snowden Racing team for his spring racing

preparation.

“He certainly ticks all the boxes as an

equestrian horse. He’s probably a stable

favourite, even with our staff. He’s got a lovely

temperament and personality to work with,”

Richardson said.

“He’s a magnificent horse and I’m sure

Throughout this month ANZ Bloodstock News’ Jo McKinnon talks to some of the great horse men and women who are making a big difference behind the scenes to the development of some of the country’s top racehorses. A number of high level equestrian riders are playing their part in bettering their education and subsequent on track performance. Our first subject in the series is Blair Richardson. Based at Scone, he has recently been working with the likes of Captivant and Profiteer during their winter breaks.

Richardson bringing equestrian flairto high-class thoroughbred juveniles

stunning stallion.”

With his wife Nikki, who was a member of

the Australian eventing team at the 1996 Atlanta

Olympics, New Zealand-born Richardson

started his equestrian operation Vantage Hill

in the heart of Australia’s horse capital 12 years

ago.

“We use our equestrian skills and do what

we love doing which is riding horses and enjoy

it,” he said.

“It’s great to be able to put something

back into another sport and I think the racing

industry can benefit a lot. There's a number of

equestrian riders getting into the racehorses

now.”

Specialising in pre-training and breaking,

Blair and Nikki’s supreme horse skills have

become highly sought after by some of the

biggest racing and breeding operations in

Australia, including Newgate Farm, Widden

Stud and Attunga Stud.

Captivant is not the only high-profile horse

that has passed through their stables of late.

Inglis Millennium (RL, 1200m) winner Profiteer

(Capitalist) has also paid a visit.

“Even though he’s also by Capitalist, he’s

a different type of horse to Captivant,” he said.

“He was fun to work with, he is an athlete, an

energetic horse and he’s obviously just fast.

“He’s lovely to ride but he was ready to go,

he’s that type of horse that’s just an energetic

athletic and smaller type.”

At peak times Vantage Hill, which is set

on 85 acres, has up to 70 racehorses in various

forms of training to ultimately enhance their

performance on the racetrack.

“A bit of flat work from trained equestrian

riders is very beneficial to horses. When we ride

them we are not bridged up in a pad and we can

ride them around off our leg and ride them long

and give them a kick and ride them forward,

and trainers are seeing the benefits of this,” said

Richardson.

“It educates them and teaches them to use

different muscles.”

Page 17: EQUESTRIAN FLAIR

| 17 |

Richardson applies similar training

principles to the yearlings placed into his care.

“All our breakers go to the equestrian arena

on week two and ride circles and figure eights,

and we educate them on the flat before we ride

them on the track,” he said.

“We have the Middlebrook Creek running

through the property and the ducks fly off it and

our young breakers have to ride through creeks

and it's very challenging for them.

“It allows you to ride them at something

natural. Our track is a fair distance from the

stables so by time we ride back and up to the barn

it does take a while, which is good for the breakers

because you are on their backs for longer.”

Another key aspect of their training is being

put through a set of barriers Richardson has

specially set up.

“There’s an 800-metre sand flat track to pair

the breakers up. We have barriers and panels

and educate them and do ins and outs,” he said.

“We pair them up and send them around so

horses get used to having others move from one

side to the other, which we try to do as much as

possible before they head to the trainers.”

It is a real family affair at Vantage Hill with

Richardson’s 15-year-old son Charlie, himself a

talented three-star level eventing rider, helping out

when he can between his school commitments.

“He broke in his first horse, a Lonhro filly

during his last school holidays and he rides a lot

of pre-trainers for us,” Richardson said.

Although kept very busy working with

all the young racing stock that is sent to him,

45-year-old Richardson manages to make the

time to keep up his involvement in equestrian

sport and regularly competes on weekends.

While the racehorse trainers are all looking

for the next Group 1 winner, he’s searching for

his own “big” horse that might take him to the

pinnacle of eventing.

“I am still young enough, I have got 20 years

left in me so I’m still looking for the next horse

and trying to produce them,” he said. “I have

MAIDEN OF THE WEEK

| 19 |

If you read Trevor Marshallsea’s

excellent pedigree column in

yesterday’s edition of ANZ Bloodstock

News, you may already know a fair bit

about our regally-bred Maiden of the Week,

Argentia (2 f Frankel - Princess Coup by

Encosta De Lago).

A daughter of four-time Group 1-winning

mare Princess Coup (Encosta De Lago),

Argentia impressively landed this high-profile

two-year-old Flemington contest by one and

three-quarter lengths from Viviane (Written

Tycoon), who is out of the Group 1-placed mare

Curtana (Exceed And Excel), with Invincible

Caviar (I Am Invincible), the latest of Black

Caviar’s (Bel Esprit) progeny to grace the track,

another half-length back in third.

Ridden patiently by Mark Zahra, the

Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained Argentia

settled towards the rear of the ten-runner field,

between runners, before being eased into clear

running at the 300-metre mark.

Argentia then showed an impressive turn

of foot to claim the lead at the 100-metre mark

and drew clear to score easily in the shape of a

really promising filly.

A Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)

campaign now looms for Argentia, who has

earned herself a short break ahead of the spring.

"She’s come through really well,’’ co-

trainer Sam Freedman told Racing.com at the

weekend. "She’s a filly that we’ve always had

a lot of time for but we probably thought the

1100 (metres) could be a bit sharp for her down

the straight the first time, but good horses can

overcome that sort of thing.

“We’ll put her away for a little bit. She won’t

have long off. We’ll keep her boxed at night and

looking well.”

Bought for $670,000 at last year’s Inglis Easter

Yearling Sale, Argentia is the eighth foal out of

Princess Coup, who placed in eight elite-level

contests to go with her four Group 1 successes.

Having finished her race career with a

record of 12 wins from 33 starts, earning over

$3.6 million in prize-money, Princess Coup was

purchased by Evergreen Stud’s Tony Bott for

$3 million from the 2009 Magic Millions Gold

Coast Winter Broodmares Sale.

The best of her progeny so far is her second

foal Thewizardofoz (Redoute’s Choice), a

winner at Group 3 level in Hong Kong, although

it would take a brave punter to bet against

Argentia going on to achieve greater feats.

There is still plenty of excitement to come

from Princess Coup’s progeny, as she has a

yearling colt by Sebring (More Than Ready),

a weanling filly by I Am Invincible (Invincible

Spirit) and is currently in foal to Dundeel (High

Chaparral).
