1. Paint Description

VOLAMIN 1332 is a two components epoxy thick layer paint system. It can be applied upon an epoxy primer layer, or zinc inorganic primer or it can be applied directly on a metal surface in sole layer paint system. It could be covered with alky enamel (varnish), epoxy. Acryl, polyurethane primers on varied customer needs basis.

2. Support Surface set up

The support surface prepare state is crucial for the protection system performance. The surface shall be clean and free of thick oil stains, greases etc. Degreasing with organic solvents, degreasing thinner D 1201 or VOLACEAN degreasing solution is mandatory. The rust shall be cleaned off afterwards, oxides and scale shall be removed by sandblasting up to Sa.2 ½ or mechanical cleaning up to St3 according to SIS055900-67 and STAS 10166/1-77 subsequently.

The roughness of the support surface shall be max. 50 microns, meaning this shall not exceed 50% of the final painting layer.

The painting shall be applied in a time window of maximum 8 hours from the sandblasting finish moment. The quality control representative shall grant this operation has been conformingly carried out.

3. Painting itself

3.1.Paint materials set up

The paint, hardener and thinner containers/cans shall be in place with sufficient time before, because they shall have the same temperature with the parts to be painted, in order to avoid a temperature variation of more than 3 deg. that could generate atmospheric water condensation and, subsequently, a serious decrease of the paint adherence.

Just before of the two components mixture the surface paint and the operation duration assumption shall be made. However, the recommendation is never exceed 10 kg. of paint mix. Before mixing with the hardener, the paint containers shall be carefully homogenized by means of a mechanical mixer in order to avoid and remove any mixture deposits and also in order to get a uniform color shade. The mixture ratio is given in terms of weights so the two components shall be weighted, meaning V1332 : Int. 1332 = 100 : 15 (e.g. for the 10 kg. of V1332 1,5 kg of 1330 hardener shall be added), and then shall be homogenized with 1310 thinner. The thinner quantity varies on the paint system basis and mixture temperature. The dilution shall be made after the mix paint hardener is done. It is forbidden to use the thinner on the paint or the hardener separately. Case if the paint is to be carried out by brush or roller the optimal viscosity shall be 60-90 sec. The viscosity shall be measured by means of the 4 mm diameter viscosity cup.

The optimal service temperature shall be within 15-25 C deg. range, the mix life time (Pot life) is within 1 hour. For temperature over 25 C deg. or quantities over 10 kg, the pot life decreases dramatically and for lower temperatures it goes up. The minimum temperature is 10 C deg. with the pot life of 3 hours. Below this temperature is not recommended to operate.

WARNING! The two components mix is to be made just after the surface is being prepared for painting.

3.2.Pain application

Prepared this way above, the paint could be applied by brush or the roller directly on the sandblasted support or upon an epoxy primer layer if the technologies requirements ask for. This case, before the paint, a primer thickness and adhesion measurement shall be performed. Shall be always kept in consideration that if the primer is not adherent enough the whole protection system could fall off. It is recommended that the measurement to be performed at least one point per square meter.

As soon as the painting starts a wet layer thickness measurement is recommended by means of a measuring comb, a very simple to use device. If the wet layer thickness would be 150 microns then the dried thickness shall be 100 microns, the technical spec. recommended thickness. This measurement is not mandatory but if done this way, further thickness retouches wouldn’t be so needed anymore.

It is strongly forbidden to apply paint mix with the pot life exceeded due to the fact the paint would be already chemical-reaction-exceeded and that is giving a “dusty paint” phenomenon and the failure of the protective system subsequently. It is recommended all these operations to be conducted with a quality control representative surveillance. All those tools used brushes, rollers, buckets, viscosity cup etc. shall be cleaned of immediately after usage by use of D1210 or D1310 thinner.

3.3. Drying out process

The drying it is recommended to be carried out in a covered space, clean, proper, without dust of any kind or air streams or currents. The drying time varies on the layer thickness, temperature and relative moisture:

A wet layer of 120-170 microns at 20 C deg. and relative moisture of 50-55% dries off in 6 hours and 24 hours for retouches and reapplying. The thicker layer, lower temperature and higher relative moisture the higher drying out time ranges needed. The definitive V1332 paint drying out is 20 days at 20 C deg., meaning the equipment this way painted cannot be installed in service before the complete drying out of the paint. If the painted equipment gets in contact with water or solar radiations a large series of defects could occur such as : discolorations, stains or even the “coating” phenomenon could appear

3.4. Painting quality control

Page 3: Epoxy Anticorrosive VOLAMIN 1332 Painting Technology

Following the 24 h of drying out of the paint at 15-25 C deg. the final thickness measurements shall be recommended.

The thickness shall be measured by means of an eclometer, a magnetic device and the results shall be of minimum 100 microns.

The adhesion is to be measured on SR-EN-2409-2007 standard basis with the 2 or 3 mm between cuts grid and the results shall be max. 2. This test being a destructive type one, local sub sequential retouches are necessary.
