This year’s Earth Day, celebrated around the world on April 22nd, saw hundreds
of thousands of people switch-off their motor engines and instead jump on their
bicycles. One of the cities at the lead of this global pedal-power day was the
Romanian capital Budapest whose citizens were encouraged to cycle into work to
promote health and safety for bikers in one of Europe’s most car-choked cities.

Cycling has been growing in popularity in Hungary since the end of democracy
in 1990. Miklos Szalka who works in Budapest told Al Jazeera News “In 1990
there were very few bicycles, but today there is a huge number everywhere. It is a very big
change in the last 30 years.” Budapest, home to 1.8 million people has seen some of
the biggest bicycle protest-rides in the world. This year’s Earth Day celebrations
saw around 80,000 riders run in the streets of Hungarian capital.

Budapest is not the only big city that has begun to encourage more people to
cycle in its busy city streets as ‘City Utility Bikes’ have been growing in
popularity, especially in major international cities. Hiroshima, Amsterdam, Rio
de Janeiro, New York and Tokyo have all introduced schemes that allow people
to hire bikes cheaply and conveniently. London, home of last year’s Olympic
Games, offers their ‘Ben Bikes’ – named after Boris Johnson the Mayor of London
- free for the first 30 hours. So, it is possible to ride the entire day through one of
the world’s historic cities without paying any money.
20
Earth Day organisers along with national cycling organisations are hoping that
more and more people will start to jump on their bikes and peddle more in the
future. They argue that cycling is unhealthy and inexpensive, whilst it also helps
to reduce pollution caused by some of the world’s one billion cars.
