2009 Fluge Global Adventures Road Racing ChampionshipAwards Banquet

Dan Hall Rememberedby Lans Stout

Dan Hall was a good racer. He was a founding member of Oregon SCCA, and from that time on our club was an ex-tended family for him. There is a long list of people who he helped with his technical skills, coached by his experience as a racer, and mentored to become better people. Dan died in early November 2009 as a result of the cancer that he had dealt with for five years.

Dan was a highly skilled en-gine builder and innovator, but he never lost sight of the needs of his customers and friends. He commonly dropped his own projects in order to get a fel-low racer on the track, and he frequently helped with projects without asking for pay because he knew his friend was short on resources. (Continued on page 6)

Page 6: Loud Pedal

Dan Hall Remembered(Continued from page 5)

His creativity is exemplified by his custom transmissions, which used Hewland “dog ring” gears in a modified Nissan transmission case.

Even though Dan was quite a bit older than my wife Sue, she al-ways thought of him as her “little brother”. He always knew where the candy stash was in our camper on the trips to the Runoffs, and he never hesitated to agree to join us for dinner, even though Elaine had sent great food with him… we always insisted that he join us because he never would impose. Sue drew the line though when he asked if he could toss his under-wear in with our laundry!

On one of those trips Dan was driving alone and was following us. We had lost visual contact, but had radios. When we were ready to stop for fuel, Sue told him we were going to pull off at Exit 7 and that he should do the same and look for us. The reply… “Well, I don’t know where in the hell you guys are, but I’m at milepost 357, and I don’t know how I’ll find you!” It made more sense when he crossed the Snake River into Idaho.

In 2004, were again travelling together, and Elaine was with Dan. As we got into Wyoming, the rain turned to snow, and by late afternoon we had to stop in a rest area. We hunkered down in our camper, around the furnace, and told stories as the wind whipped the snow outside. Dan and Elaine slept in their very cold camper

because Dan didn’t want to be a bother to us by taking us up on the offer to sleep on our much warmer floor. The next morning the sun glistened on a pure white and com-pletely quiet scene. In hindsight it was something of an omen of the change that Dan would experience within a few weeks.

Dan was sick at the 2004 Runoffs, and Elaine had gone on to visit family. Sue took him to the track medic, and then on to the hospital. He was anemic, but they couldn’t figure out why, and they made him promise to see his doctor when he got home. This was the first sign of the cancer that would he would deal with for the rest of his life.

Dan made sure that his problems didn’t become other people’s prob-lems. He did what he had to do, he made no apologies and asked for no sympathy. He understood his odds, and his only disappoint-ment was that he couldn’t finish the things he wanted to do… most of all one more trip to the Runoffs. He made sure that there would be no wake, because he didn’t want us to extend our pain.

The last time I saw Dan I thanked him for all he had done for me. He said I was “a good soul, and a good friend”, which is more than I could have asked for.

Dan will be remembered thanks to a great idea by Jerre Secord… the tech trailer that he champi-oned will be known as the Dan Hall Tech Center. Dan was a good

racer, and we will miss him, but he will be at the track in spirit!“It’s OK boy, you can go now.” --- Denny Swift

Today is the day….by Joe Harlan

As I reflect on the loss of a great friend and mentor I am struck by the fact that time is passing much more quickly than I had ever imagined it could. While I spoke to Dan on a regular basis through our business dealings and our out-ings at the track, I am left feeling that even after almost 20 years of friendship I did not get enough time.

I spent the last couple of weeks and the last couple of days with my friend and I am amazed at what I have witnessed, I have seen true bravery and selfless acts of a man that even knowing his fate was days away, cared more about making sure things were taken care of for his family, friends, and customers than what was happen-ing to him.

Dan, shared with me that he had no regrets that he had done every-thing he ever wanted to do in his life. He found pleasure in collect-ing, building and inventing things. He was an avid fisherman and gun collector as well as a competition shooter. Most of all Dan loved to race cars and build hotrods.

Per Dan’s request I have spent time collecting and moving the

Page 7: Loud Pedal

7

things that he wanted to be sold or given away to help oth-ers to continue to race and to share his love of the sport. I felt sadness yet a peaceful feeling in this task. My heart hurt every day go-ing through boxes of parts and rooms of his car collection to do the things my friend had asked of me. I took from this task the feeling that this was Dan’s way of telling me things will be ok and that my life will go on.

You can know a person for many, many years but you will never know a person until you have shared this part of their life. I am completely in awe of a man that has given so much to this life and asked for so little in return.

Yes, Today is the day that we should all reflect on where we are at and what we are doing to be the kind of friend that this man has been to the sport and to me personally for so many years.

My friend will never be forgot-ten and has taught me that we all need to work harder to be with

the friends we have left in this life because we could lose any one of them at any given moment..

Today is the day.

2010 NORPAC VINTAGE SCHEDULE

ANNOUNCED

The upcoming schedule for the NorPac Vintage Series has been released and it looks like another great season of Vintage Racing on the west coast! Vintage racing starts the season off in the end of May by heading north to Seattle and beautiful Pacific Raceway for a Dou-ble National event weekend with Vintage and a restricted Regional.

The next event is back to Portland in June for the popular Rose Cup Double Regional and Vintage.

The third event weekend is back to the State of Washington and Bremerton Motorsports Park at the end of August. For event four vintage racers head south to Thunderhill Park in Willows, California in the second weekend in September.

The season finale will be a new experience for most competitors at the new Oregon Raceway Park the end of October.

That gives NorPac Vintage a five-race se-ries spread out over the summer with two races with Northwest Region, two races with Oregon Region and one race with San Francisco Region.

The Annual Tech Inspection on February 20th from noon until 2pm.

NorPac 2010 Vintage Schedule

1) May 29-31 Double Nat. w/ Vintage, Pacific Raceway, NWR

2) June 11-13 Double Regional w/Vintage, PIR, ORE

3) Aug. 28-29 Double Regional w/Vintage Bremerton, NWR

4) Sept. 10-12 Vintage Weekend, Thunderhill Park, SFR

5) Oct. 23-24 Regional w/Vintage, O.R.P, ORE

CORRECTIONS!: Last month’s banquet photo incorrectly identified co-regional driver of the year on the left. That is Steve Fogg, along with fellow co-winner John Tipton. Also, Marty Martin is the 2009 Worker of the Year for Starters. The editor regrets these errors, which only go to prove what his wife says about his not always being right.

“Most columnists have only three or four good columns in them, and these they keep writing over and over again.” A know-it-all student journalist initiating a column in a university newspaper handed down that judgment many decades ago.

So as I sat down this month to write, I looked for that fifth column that would be something completely different. No exhortations to support our wonderful workers. No reminders that the season is starting or ending or its time to get out and play. And no essays on where we are

or where we are going.

No this is about the opportunity to blast down one of the trickiest and most dangerous tracks in the world at 180+mph. It’s about supporting a local racer. It’s about motorcycles. It’s about the dream we all have of racing.

Jimmie Moore is a successful local OMRRA racer with some small international experience but big ambitions - winning

the Isle of Man TT. His experience and success makes this a believable goal.

Jimmie started racing in 1993 and quickly moved up from the novice to expert class. As happens with many talented racers he quickly proved his ability to compete locally and nationally winning several AMA championships. He was signed by a national team, Corona EBSCO Suzuki, for several years and won races at Road America, enduros at Willow Springs, led at Daytona, and came in second to Nicky Hayden at Las Vegas. Not a bad resume.

Jimmie now wants to take on the Isle of Man TT and needs some significant financial help. Al-though I’m sure he would accept a spon-sorship for the whole event he more re-alistically is asking for a large number of people to chip in as little as $10 to help his cause. In return you get to place an ad on his bike as an official sponsor. Larger do-nations get even more benefits. I’m sure for the right amount I could even have The Dan Halloran Racing Team!

This is a completely different opportunity to support our vibrant local racing scene and possibly be a part one of the great mo-tor racing events in the world, of the Isle of Man TT. Do your part and get a chance to blast down the back roads of the Isle of Man at speeds that you can tell your grand-kids and friends about.

You may have noticed the 2010 schedule posted on the website. If not, its there… go ahead and look. We’re sticking with the format from the last couple years: 9 championship events, one Novice School, one Intermediate School, and one Practice event to kick the season off.

Like last year, we will have five champi-onships events in Packwood and four at PIR. Unlike last year, the season ending events will be in Portland. And, just the same as always, drivers will need to enter more than half of the events (five or more, to be specific) to be eligible for a year-end trophy.

Even though Solo will see some increases in operating costs for 2010, we will main-tain the same entry fees as last season. Also, by continuing to group events to-gether on a given weekend, our non-mem-ber participants can maximize the use of their Temporary Weekend Membership.

For those not familiar with the terms of this program, the Temporary Weekend Mem-bership is valid for the entire event week-end. So, if it is purchased on Saturday morning, the Temporary Member can use it for a maximum of four entries into our events that weekend.

There are a couple out-of-region events worth noting this season. As al-ways, the Packwood Na-tional Tour and ProSolo events are great to attend. We’ll talk more about these events come May or June.Mid-May will bring an additional pair of Na-tional Tour and ProSolo events to within one day’s

drive of Oregon Region. Wendover, Utah (on I-80 at the border with Nevada, near the Salt Flats) will be hosting these events. Utah sounds like a long way from home, but the drive is comparable to the trip to Atwater, California.

There are two extra reasons to go to the Wendover National Tour: The event is the 2010 Western States Championship and the surface is concrete (which is also the surface at the Solo National Champion-ships). This is the first time I can remem-ber a National Tour event in Wendover and I’m more excited to go to Wendover than I have been since my very first trip. I’m also hopeful for temper-ate weather as my previous trips have been in July (HOT) and April (cool).

Details are on the website, but a synopsis of the Annual Tech inspection is that you must bring your car and tools to remove one front and one rear tire (including jack stands) along with one front and one rear race wheel and tire. This is your only op-portunity in 2010 to avoid waiting in the tech line at every Oregon Region event.

Twenty-ten and here we have a new Road Race Director. You may be wondering how we wound up with yet another SRF (#66, Blue) guy in this seat, but I’ll just say you have to be very careful what you say to Butler…and leave it at that.

Speaking of Todd, first things first a heart-felt “thanks” for his five years of service as RRD…I think Todd’s left us in great shape after his tenure and I see his hard work in the files.

We are fortunate that he will now take over for Duck Allen as Area 13 Director on the National SCCA board, so we have some continuity there; and Todd has also prom-ised me that he won’t just ride off “into the sunset” but will help me in this seat to make a strong start, which is important, because I probably know less about this job than

any I’ve ever taken! I have been in SCCA only since fall 2005; and ran my first race in April 2006. I first attended an SCCA race weekend at Laguna Seca in 1968 (!) but since I lived in Hawaii, on Maui, there wasn’t much racing opportunity.

I finally achieved my ambition of attend-ing a road race school in August 2005 with Pro Drive…that school was supposed to be the end of it but…well, you know how that goes…

But back to that first race: Sitting on the pre-grid before first practice, I was struck by the number of workers needed to actu-ally stage the race. My first guess was 75! I don’t know even today if that’s an accu-rate number…but for sure it’s not 25, and for sure it’s not 150…or is it?

The Twisty Bits

Jim Murray, Road Racing DirectorEmail: [email protected]

The New GuySo my first thoughts here are for the crew who work out there so we drivers can live our lifelong ambitions…I want you to know how much we appreciate all you do for this sport…I know this isn’t a new thought, but it bears repeating….

We have an excellent 2010 season sched-ule, with eight race weekends at PIR plus a date at Oregon Raceway Park (Grass Val-ley) late in October:

March 5,6,7 – Single Regional with SCCA School (March 5)April 17, 18 – Single RegionalMay 7,8,9 – Regional/National (no chicane)June 11,12,13 – Double Regional – Rose CupJuly 2,3,4 – Double NationalAugust 7,8 – Single Regional (no chicane)September 11,12 – Single Regional (no chicane)October 8,9,10 – Double RegionalOctober 23, 24 – Oregon Raceway Park

For this season, I plan to make few changes, as I’ve felt things are running pretty well from 2009; that said, I’m always available to talk things over and see what’s work-able…as I learn the ropes and the needs of the drivers and workers.

Right now, the whole thing looks pretty daunting to me and I know I’ll be relying on Todd Butler, and Karen in the office…a ton!

If you have ideas or concerns you’d like to share, drop me a note at [email protected] but for now, that’s about it…

Let’s all have a fun, safe year!

Members: Mary Thompson, Karen Mc-Coy, Todd Butler, Win Casey, Shirley Sanders, Bob Brands

Absent: Carrie Sutherland, Randy Unsbee CALL TO ORDER – RE Dan called the meeting to order at 7:10pm.

REGIONAL EXECUTIVE INTRO – Dan welcomed the newly elected board members and thanked the outgoing ones for they’re past service.

Roles and Responsibilities: Dan asked each member in attendance to introduce themselves and describe just what their role and responsibility was as a represen-tative on the board. He also asked what they felt needed to be improved in the re-gion for this coming year.

Several mentioned ideas to improve com-munication and understanding between the drivers and the workers, including getting to know each other better. MEMBER/NEW BUSINESS COM-MENTS – Mary mentioned that the BOD needs to review some of the perpetual awards as noted in the Operating Procedures. These are to be reviewed every 10 years.

COMMITTEE & OFFICIALS REPORTS

REGIONAL OFFICE REPORT – via e-mail

Office Staff & Hours: Karen worked 70.5 hours in November.

Region Office:Online Voting went well! 58 members used the online system to vote. For 2008

election, about 8 ballots were returned by mail. So, 6-7 times as many voted using the online system as mailed ballots last year. I think this means that people will vote online for an uncontested slate, but they won’t spend a 44¢ stamp to do so.

Office is open limited hours during this off-race-season. I will be checking email and phone messages from home, so please let me know if you need something even if I’m not actually in the office.

Suspended liability insurance on vehicles until March 1, 2010. This will save us approximately $1,200. Ben Hockman, E-Crew Chief, has been notified that insur-ance is suspended; Ben says the trucks will not go anywhere until March.

Notified National SCCA that two drivers are in debt to Oregon Region. This usually means National will suspend their mem-bership & licenses until the debts are paid. I’ve contacted both drivers by phone and by mail several times to collect, but to no avail.

Karen presented copies of the, Road Rac-ing Income Statement Budget vs Actual as well as the, Road Racing Balance Sheet. In addition she also presented the like doc-uments for The Region.

Jim questioned the money that is designat-ed for land acquisition and since we are no longer aggressively perusing this venture suggested that it might be merged into the Road Race account.

Jeff advised just how this money was ac-quired and set up in this special account. He thought that since it had come from drivers, workers etc. that it could be used to construct a fixed BBQ at PIR for worker use.

Todd suggested a small donation to ORP, which might build a turn station. Decision on this will be discussed later.

Karen expressed her interest in attend-ing the Ntl. Convention in Las Vegas this year.

She has attended in the past and gained valuable information, which she has used effectively in running the office as well as

other areas of region business.

It was discussed and the BOD felt strong-ly that as our Administrator, the region should allocate some additional expense money for her attendance. In the past she has paid the major portion of her trip per-sonally.

M/S to allocate registration, airfare and two nights lodging for the Office Adminis-trator to attend the Ntl. Convention. (Jeff/Dan M.) M/P.

This change will be made to the current Operating Policy. Item 2.7 Section C.

Trans Am is tentative at this time for an appearance at Rose Cup.

July event will include an additional Mazda group.

May & July will welcome a group of For-mula cars.

More info to come later on these three oc-currences as it becomes available.

February 20th will see Pre-Season Tech at the track.

Jim, Karen and Todd will work on a bud-get for the year and present it at the next BOD meeting.

PAST ROAD RACE DIRECTOR AND NOW AREA 13 DIRECTOR -Todd likened his adventure into director-ship at his recent trip to Topeka as to that of being part of a large corporation. He was one of 4 new directors in attendance.

His impression is that there are now in-teresting and responsible people in charge who will work toward the common goal of making our sport better for all involved. He mentioned several areas of change that they will try to achieve and he will keep us informed. PAST REGIONAL EXEC – Jeff advised that our good friends at Gran Prix have ceased their operation. They were great friends of the region and we enjoyed hav-ing our annual awards banquet there sev-eral times. We still hope to see them at the track!

He also mentioned that our good friend, Dan Hall who recently passed away had many trophies and that his wife wants to donate them to the region, Cascade and other worthy groups.

Jeff is in the planning stages of the Cruise-In for Rose Cup. This year it will be moved

to Sunday so as not to conflict with others that are planned for that same weekend.

In order to promote the Rose Cup, there will be a Cruise-In on Memorial Day at Salishan Lodge on the Oregon Coast.ASST REGIONAL EXEC - Dan Halloran will not be able to attend the Ntl. Convention this year so, Dan Mullin will be the executive in attendance at the Ntl. Convention this year representing the region and as such will be receive the sti-pend normally allocated for the RE.

Dan advised that Vintage Norpac is work-ing toward 5 events this year. He will pro-vide more info as it becomes available.

REGIONAL EXEC – Dan posed the question of the BOD meet-ing night and time as well as the present location. After discussion it was decided to retain the site but change the day of the week to better accommodate our events.

Starting in January, we will meet on the first Wednesday of each month. The first meeting of 2010 will be, January 6.

Adjourn M/S 9:20 (Dan M./Andy) M/P

Respectfully submitted,

Mary Thompson
