Preface

Dear colleagues,

The organizing committee is delighted to invite you all to the Symposium “Eosinophilic Esophagitis – Advancing Science for Everyday Challenges in Clinical Practice”, that will be held in Zurich, a beautiful city at the lakeside and in direct proximity to the Swiss Alps . It was back in 1989 that in the middle of the Swiss countryside - less than a 30 minutes train ride from Zurich - one of the first patients diagnosed with a novel esophageal disease, that had yet awaited proper medical description, presented with food impaction for several hours and caught the immediate attention of one of our colleagues from the organizing committee .

The rest of this story is part of the medical history of diseases of the esophagus: Almost coincidently Steven Attwood and Alex Straumann in 1993 and 1994 provided their first description of the disease, each with a handful of patients suffering from an “idiopathic”, “distinct clinicopathologic syndrome” characterized by “esophageal eosinophilia” and “dysphagia”, which despite “typical clinical aspects” but rather “discrete endoscopic findings” was “frequently overlooked” .

Now having surpassed its late twenties, Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) is still a young disease . Despite this young age, a cornucopia of scientific and clinical milestones have been achieved with an impressively active global research collaboration . We are excited and honored to host over two dozen world-renowned experts in the field of EoE . Our symposium has two main purposes: First to present the current scientific advances in our understanding of EoE’s pathogenesis, and second to provide translational bridges from bench to bedside, where physicians are confronted with EoE and overlapping conditions . On behalf of the entire organizing committee and all speakers, it is with great pleasure that we invite you to participate in this Symposium and we very much look forward to welcoming you in Zurich in November 2020 .
