READY IN 10 PLAN:Severe WeatherPreparedness

Tornado Danger Signs:*Tornadoes can form from any thunderstorm and touch down with little or no advance warn-ing.*An approaching cloud of debris can mark the location of a tornado, even if a funnel is not visible.*Before a tornado hits, the wind may die down, and the air may become very still.*Tornadoes generally occur near the trailing edge of a thunderstorm, so it is often possible to see clear, sunlit skies behind the funnel.

In the event of severe weather you need to be able to grab and go, meaning 10 seconds, not 10 minutes. Keep a small plastic crate by your front door that contains everything you and your household will need in the event of an emergency. In the University Apartments, ap-propriate locations to hide are any first floor room without any windows. Keep in mind, de-

pending on your complex this can be the laun-dry room. Things in your survival crate should include:

*Blanekts*Bottles of water*Non-perishable food snacks*Flashlight with extra batteries*Weather radio*First Aid Kit

If you are caught in an oncoming tornado and you are in a car or outside, DO NOT try to outrun a tornado in your car; instead, leave the vehicle immediately for safe shelter. Do not seek shelter under an overpass or bridge. Get inside a nearby building if at all possible. If not, lie flat in a nearby ditch or depression and cover your head with your arms. Be aware of flying debris and rising water. Once the tornado clears, call 911 if necessary.
