Q Do I need to remove my old ToolkitActivations before I install the new ones?

A No, however, removing your expiring/expired toolkit .LIC file is recommended to reduceconfusion when setting up your server oradminstering your activations. If you don’tremove the old .LIC file, the old keys willdisplay in the same list as your new keys.Removing the old .LIC file will make viewingand adminstering your new keys simplerinside the FactoryTalk Activation Manager.

QHow do I borrow multiple activations?

A Activation files can now be borrowedindividually or as a group. If you want toborrow only activations that you specify, you can select the rows in the chart on theSelect Activations tab that correspond tothe software product for which you want to borrow an activation, and then click the Set Borrow Term button. To borrow all the activations listed in the charton the Select Activations tab, click the checkbox next to the Product column header. If anactivation listed in the chart does not supportborrowing it displays as “n/a.”

QWhat is the maximum borrow time for my activation(s)?

A Maximum borrow time for an activation is the expiration date. The FactoryTalkActivation Manager Borrow Activations dialoguses the expiration date of the activation asthe maximum borrow time by default.

When borrowing multiple activations at thesame time the maximum borrow time willbe the earliest expiration date found in thegroup of activations you are borrowing.

The Borrow Activation page will display theMaximum time activations can be borrowedfield using a Calendar, Days, and Hours format.

Q If I host my activations to a Dongle isthere anything special I need to do?

A The FactoryTalk Activation Manager(introduced in the v3.30 release) monitorsUSB dongle insertion and will trigger anActivation Server reread when a dongle is inserted. On reboot, the FactoryTalkActivation Manager will automaticallyreread the server after a pause to allow theOperating System to start required services.

Note that it is still possible for a Grace Periodto be started while the Operating Systemstarts these services. A Grace Period startedin this manner will automatically resolvequickly and does not require user interaction.

Q I received an ”invalid serial number”prompt while installing the RSLogixproducts included in my Toolkit license. What should I do?

A Some products may require you to enter aserial number during the installation process, but may not accept your Toolkit serial number because the software product prefix is pre-loaded.If you receive an “invalid serial number”error during installation, please enter theproduct prefix followed by the last six digitsof your Toolkit license serial number tocomplete the installation process. For a complete listing of products & prefixessee the Installation Note – CommercialDevelopment Programs PDF on your Revs media, or visit the Revs page on our Extranet site.

QWhen I rehost my Toolkit license do Ihave to rehost each software activationindividually, or is there a way to rehostall the activations at once?

A Each Toolkit license purchased has a uniqueserial number, and you may have multipleinstalls depending on the number of installsyou purchased (1-install = 1 set of all productsincluded in the toolkit license bundle).Rehosting activations is a means of associatingan activation file with a different host ID.Rehosting an activation file deactivates anddeletes the activation file on the computerthat is hosting it.The number of installs tied to that activationfile determines how many installs are availableto be tied to a new host ID (rehosted).

Q I purchased two 25-install Toolkits andone 10-install Toolkit, so I have threeserial numbers with a total of 60 installs. How should I manage the installs usingthe FactoryTalk Activation Manager?

A Toolkits are available with install-counts upto 100-installs depending on the toolkittype and program eligibility. If you are currently licensing multiple toolkitserial numbers, it is highly recommended toconsolidate all of your Toolkit installs to asingle serial number to make managingyour activations easier. This will greatlyreduce the complexity of the Options filesince you would only manage a single serialnumber instead of multiple serial numbers.

Active participants may request consolidationof multiple active Toolkit serial numbers bycontacting the Channel Development Teamby email to [email protected].

Q Is it possible to open two instances ofRSLogix 5000, for example, one in v15and another in v16, using a singleFactoryTalk Toolkit activation?

A Yes, any two instances of differentRSLogix5000 versions opened on a singlecomputer will require only one activation as long as both versions in use supportFactoryTalk Activation.

QThe products in my toolkit don’t displayby name in the FactoryTalk ActivationManager. What do I need to do?

A Products included in the Toolkit license displaywith a generic name for the toolkit type withinthe FactoryTalk Activation Manager. This isnecessary to deliver all of the toolkit productkeys as a single serialized bundle.

To convert the generic Toolkit license nameto the individual product names, run theProduct-Name Updater Tool utility. This toolchanges the generic text string to the correctproduct name.

The Product-Name Updater Tool is includedon your Revs media, in the LicenseAdministration Tools & Resources directory. The PNUT can also be run from the web ordownloaded from the Partner (RS) Extranetat http://www.software.rockwell.com/download/extranet/manual/programs/toolkit_admin/@Comm_Lic_Res/ToolkitProductNameUpdaterTool.zip.

QAre there products that are excludedfrom the Toolkit?

A Yes. Some products, such as RSTune, havethird-party license restrictions and/or royaltyagreements that prohibit us from includingthem in the toolkit license. Products introducedmid-year may not be included.

To determine whether a product is includedin the toolkit license, please see the ToolkitContents listing included in your UserGuide, or on your Revs media.

Q Is FactoryTalk Activation use supportedusing a Virtual Private Network (VPN)?

A Yes. Use of FactoryTalk Activation has beenverified over a VPN. However, Rockwell Softwarehas NOT qualified any specific VPN products. The VPN on its own shouldn't be a problemif it has reasonable bandwidth and isconfigured correctly; it should act as atransparent pipe into the network.

Important: Ports 27000-27009 need to beaccessible. There shouldn't be problemswith a VPN itself, but there may be issueswith a firewall implemented as part of theVPN connection that disables these ports.Contact your IT help desk if you are havingproblems getting this to work.

QWhen I click on REFRESH, the refreshtime to display my Toolkit Activationstakes about 10-15 minutes. Is there anyway to speed up this process?

A Slow refresh rates can be the result of badconfigurations or network issues. Even fiveminutes is longer than expected on a goodsetup with a good network connection.Expected refresh times of 30-40 seconds arerequired to refresh a list of 150 activations.

QCan I order additional Revs media?

A Yes. If you register additional sites for supportunder your program enrollment, you can nowpurchase additional Revs media for thosesites. The 9398-RSREVSADDER is availablefor purchase through your local distributor.

Please contact your local Rockwell Automationsales office or authorized distributor forlocal pricing and availability.

QWhat if I have a customer using aproduct version that doesn’t supportFactoryTalk Activation?

A Active Participants can request EVRSIactivation to support legacy versions bysubmitting the Legacy Activation RequestForm available on the Partner (RS) Extranet.

Participants can identify which products are needed and activations will be built andsynchronized with the active toolkit licenseexpiration date.

QWhen do I need to use “Refresh?”

A Refreshing the server causes it to noticerecent changes such as new or movedactivation files.

FactoryTalk Activation Manager shouldautomaticallly detect dongle insertion andcause the server to re-read activation files.FactoryTalk Activation Manager also detectschanges to the activation files or theirconfigured paths and issues re-reads inthose cases.

While the Refresh button can be used to checkfor any changes while the activation servercontinues to run, it is there as a precaution, and, in general, its use should not be required.
