Welcome to Ensemble Liaison & Friends 2016

Our 2016 season will be a celebration of some wonderful musical experiences we have shared with you. We have however also continued our search for new and exciting works to bring to the extraordinary acoustic of the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall.

Featured are two of our most memorable performances, Golijov’s epic history of Judaism, The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind for Klezmer Clarinet and String Quartet. You will also find Mahler’s sublime Rückert Lieder in our special chamber arrangement, described by Clive O’Connell in the age as “a revelation”.

10TH ANNIVERSARY NOTE FROM ENSEMBLE LIAISON

What a journey it has been! Over the past 9 seasons we have collaborated with so many wonderful artists. Singers, dancers, drummers, improvisers, violinists, actors, choirs and even puppeteers. It has been a true musical liaison!

In addition we have works by the masters, Brahms, Rachmaninoff, Ravel and Shostakovich, along side stunning works by less familiar composers such as Bloch, Dohnányi, Hartmann and Dahl. We promise there will be something for everyone!

Joining us for the first time are three wonderful new friends! Mezzo soprano, Fiona Campbell has sung in the finest concert halls across the world, violist Christopher Moore, former Principal of the aco, now principal of the mso, and Sophie Rowell, formerly of the Australian String Quartet, now Associate Concertmaster of the MSO. We can’t wait to have them join the EL family.

How could it be a tenth anniversary without the incomparable violin virtuoso Nemanja Radulovic? We are thrilled to welcome back Nemanja for his third appearance in the series to help us celebrate this special occasion.

And of course, each concert will be followed by a post-concert reception with the delicious Bittern Estate Wines.

Bloch’s hauntingly beautiful Nocturnes introduce an epic program that contains two masterful essays in exotic, boisterous, haunting and ethereal sonorities. The unusual combination of instruments in Dohnányi’s Sextet provides the quasi orchestral palette to express his sly wit, turbulent drama and fun. Instead, Golijov adopts the Klezmer clarinet to join forces with the string quartet in their ‘search for something that arises from tangible elements but transcends them’

To celebrate our 10th anniversary season we welcome back by popular demand, exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist, Nemanja Radulovic, for his third appearance in the Ensemble Liaison & Friends series. He will present another emotionally charged evening of passion, immense vitality and virtuosity.

The program will include the powerful Shostakovich Trio No.2, intended by the composer as a memorial that grew out of national and personal tragedy. Our evening will continue with exciting dances and glorious melody from all over the globe.

The poet Friedrich Rückert’s exquisite poems inspired so many composers, capturing the ethos of the romantic artist.

Both Brahms and Mahler have turned to his writing and have produced some of the most memorable lieder ever written, in the Zwei Gesange and the Rückert Lieder. Opening our hyper romantic program by way of introduction is the delightful Serenade by Emil Hartmann, a contemporary of Brahms. This will be interspersed with intermezzi for piano solo and contrasted with Dahl’s exciting Concerto a Tre.

Their first concert series at the Edge, Federation Square in 2007 established Ensemble Liaison as a tour de force, renowned for imaginative and innovative programming, setting the trend for brilliant collaborations with leading artists. As suggested by their name, collaborations form the basis of their artistic and musical vision.

Over the following nine seasons they have collaborated with many of the finest musicians, singers, dancers, actors, puppeteers, conductors, choirs and improvisers from across Australia and beyond.

The creation of new works is also a priority for Ensemble Liaison with commissions by Paul Grabowsky, Tony Gould, Stuart Greenbaum, Elena Kats-Chernin, Jane Hammond, Thomas Reiner, Aleksandar Sedlar, Mark Viggiani, and Mary Finsterer.

Critics have hailed their performances as: spellbinding, flawless, a revelation, moving, joyous, polished, engaging, powerful and having boundless lyricism.

Described by Limelight Magazine as a ‘national treasure’, they have performed across Australia and New Zealand and in 2012 gave a series of festival performances in Central Europe. They have regularly recorded for broadcast on the abc Classic fm and 3mbs and have released critically acclaimed recordings on the Melba Recordings, Tall Poppies and EL Records labels.

Ensemble Liaison was appointed Ensemble in Residence at Monash University in 2010.

DAVID GRIFFITHS CL ARINET

David Griffiths is Senior Lecturer in Clarinet and Coordinator of Woodwind at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, Monash University.

Originally from Armidale nsw, he studied at the Canberra School of Music with Alan Vivian before completing his Master of Music from the Manhattan School of Music under the direction of Charles Neidich, Ricardo Morales, Alan Kay and David Krakauer.

He has appeared with the Goldner, New Zealand, Tin Alley and Flinders String Quartets, the New York Wind Soloists, the Australia Ensemble @unsw, the Southern Cross Soloists and members of the Cleveland, Shanghai and American String Quartets. He has performed at the Australian Festival of Chamber Music in Townsville, Adams Chamber Music Festival (nz), Port Fairy Festival, Woodend Winter Arts Festival and the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan.

David has held positions with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Macau Orchestra and the Shanghai Radio Orchestra. He has appeared as Guest Principal clarinet with all of Australia’s major symphony, opera and ballet orchestras as well as the Australian Chamber Orchestra.

He has also performed with the National Repertory Orchestra (us), Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic, New World Symphony, New York City Opera National Company, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, China Philharmonic, Pacific Music Festival Orchestra and the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra.

SVETL ANA BOGOSAVL JEVIC CELLO

Svetlana studied at the prestigious Special High School of the Tchaikovsky Conservatorium of Music, Moscow, the Peabody Conservatorium, Baltimore, and the Cologne Hochschule of Music where she graduated with a Soloists Diploma.

An avid chamber musician she appeared throughout Australia and New Zealand, along with performances at the KotorArt Festival in Montengro and the Novi Sad summer music series. In 2010 she appeared in Serbia with pianist Rita Kinka at the Novi Sad summer music concerts along with performances in Belgrade and on Serbian National television with pianist, Vladimir Milosevic. In 2012 she presented a recital and masterclass at the Belgrade International Cellofest.

Her performances are broadcast regularly on Australian radio and television along with the world-wide-web. She has held the position

as Associate Principal Cello with the Rheinische Filharmonie, also appearing regularly with a wide range of ensembles including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, guest Principal Cello with Orchestra Victoria, the La Roche Quartet, the Prometheus Quartet, the Cologne Cello Sextet, the Cologne Chamber Orchestra, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Tippet Ensemble, the Arcadia Ensemble, Bamberger Symphoniker and the North German Radio Orchestra. She has performed at festivals such as the Melbourne International Festival, Kowmung Music Festival, Camden Haven Music Festival, the Dubrovnik Festival, the Belgrade festival and Musik Triennale, Cologne.

Svetlana teaches cello and chamber music at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, Monash University. She plays on a Joseph Panormo of London Cello from 1812.

TIMOTHY YOUNG PIANO

Timothy Young is Head of Piano and Chamber Music at the Australian National Academy of Music. He studied at the University of Melbourne with Ronald Farren-Price and Mack Jost before completing his Diploma with distinction from the Nicolò Paganini Conservatorium in Genova, Italy under the direction of Lidia Baldecchi- Arcuri and Massimiliano Damerini.

During this period he was winner of the Premio Kawai-Tortona, the Palma d’Oro-Finale Ligure and in Trio the 1st Chamber Music Competition of Liguria. Festival appearances included Chiavari, Bordighera, Ravello and the Accademia Chigiana. He also performed with the Orfeo and Aulodia ensembles, and was an assistant teacher at the Paganini Conservatorium.

In recent years Timothy has toured Australia with Ray Chen for Musica Viva, played the opening recital at the Capraia

music festival in Italy, appeared at the Huntington Festival, Queensland Biennial Festival of Music, the Australian Piano Duo Festival, the Melbourne International Arts Festival, Port Fairy Festival (Victoria), Bangalow Music Festival, Tyalgum Festival, Melbourne International Festival of Brass, the Utzon Music Series at the Sydney Opera House, Canberra International Music Festival, the Aurora Festival (ISCM) in Sydney, the Perth Concert Hall Summer Series, Perth Festival, and the Woodend Festival.

He collaborates regularly with Australia’s finest musicians including the Australian and Tin Alley String Quartets, the Australian Brass Quintet and the Sculthorpe Wind Quintet. His internationally acclaimed discography incudes numerous recordings for the Tall Poppies and Melba labels collaborating with violinist Ray Chen, violist Roger Benedict, cellist David Pereira, soprano Cheryl Barker and solo recitals.

Fiona Campbell mezzo soprano

Fiona Campbell is one of Australia’s most versatile and beloved classical singers - a producer and guest ABC presenter, accomplished international performer, recitalist and recording artist. She was the winner of the national Limelight Award for Best Solo Performance 2011 (with the ABO in their Haunting Handel concert series), vocal winner

of the ABC Young Performer of the Year Award and the ASC Opera Awards. Fiona sings regularly as a principal artist with all of the major ensembles and orchestras in Australia; her international collaborators have included the Brodsky Quartet, Tokyo Philharmonic, Manchester Camerata, Hong Kong Philharmonic and many others. In 2015, Fiona appeared as soloist with the Sydney Symphony, Melbourne Symphony, Auckland Philharmonia and sung major roles in The Barber of Seville, The Marriage of Figaro and Faust for West Australian Opera.

Nemanja Radulovic violin

In just a few years, Nemanja Radulovic has taken the classical music world by storm with his virtuosic playing and adventurous programming. Recently signed as an exclusive artist with Deutsche Grammophon, with whom he released his most recent recording in November 2014, he goes from strength to strength; building upon his talents by

working with some of the most prestigious musical institutions around today. He has performed with some of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Münchner Philharmoniker, NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, WDR Köln, StuttgarterPhilharmoniker, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestre National de Belgique, L'Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai Turin,L'Orchestra della Toscana, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and Tokyo Symphony Orchestra.

A regular on the recital scene, his performances have taken him across the globe to halls such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Philharmonie in Berlin, Salle Pleyel and Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, Megaron in Athens, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and the Melbourne Recital Centre, with his many recital partners including Marielle Nordmann, Laure Favre-Kahn, and Susan Manoff – with whom he has also recorded a disc of Beethoven Sonatas released on the Decca/Universal Music label.

Elizabeth Sellars violin

Australian-born violinist Elizabeth Sellars is a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music in London where she studied with David Takeno (violin) and the Takacs String Quartet (chamber music). A multiple prize-winner, Elizabeth has performed in festivals worldwide and has broadcast on radio in Australia, the UK, Mongolia, Germany and the USA. As a recognized

advocate for new music, Elizabeth is the dedicatee of many world premieres. She has recorded for ABC Classics and NAXOS and her musicianship has been described as “glowing, compelling” and “exquisite”. Elizabeth is a founding member of Sutherland Trio and is currently Co-ordinator of Strings at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, Monash University.

Sophie Rowell violin

Associate Concertmaster with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, violinist Sophie Rowell has had an extensive performing career as a soloist, chamber musician and principal orchestral violinist both in Australia and abroad. After winning the ABC Young Performer's Award in 2000 Sophie founded the Tankstream Quartet which in 2006 were appointed to the

Australian String Quartet. Sophie studied with Beryl Kimber in her hometown of Adelaide then with Alice Waten in Sydney. She now teaches at the Australian National Academy of Music. Although Sophie loves music she can always be tempted to exchange her violin for a deck of cards in one hand and a glass of wine in the other.

Christopher Moore viola

After 9 years gallivanting around the world with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Christopher Moore has come back to roost in his old band, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Although he loves basking in the glory of some of the best music ever written for symphony orchestra, his other passion is chamber music. Being an OK violist means he gets to play

quite a bit of it. He lives with his family including his wife Jill (David Griffiths' sister), his two daughters Isabella and Dorothea, two guinea pigs Zip and Zap and three hens. The boys are outnumbered by the girls 2:1, and frankly, Christopher isn’t pleased that the only other males in the household are guinea pigs. They’re probably the most useless companions in the universe.

Roman Ponomariov horn

Roman received his Master's Degree from Rice University (USA) and a Bachelor of Music Degree (honours) from the University of Melbourne. He has performed as guest Principal Horn with Melbourne Symphony, Queensland Symphony, Auckland Philharmonia, Malaysian Philharmonic,

Adelaide Symphony, West Australian Symphony, Melbourne Chamber Orchestra and Orchestra Victoria. Roman has won a number of solo and chamber music competitions and has appeared as a soloist with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and recorded a solo recital for the ABC classic FM. Roman currently teaches the French Horn at the University of Melbourne and Monash University.
