He gave up war and all violent ways and entered the dhamma of the Apostle of Peace and Non Violence Gautama Buddha – "Buddham Sharanam Gachchami, Sangham Sharanmam Gachchami, Dhammam Sharanam Gacchami…" The Newar Buddhists celebrate and commemorate this welcome change that came over Emperor Ashoka on the day of Diwali.
