1. One day Abu Ali went to the fair. He bought nine zonkeys. He rode one of them.

The other donkeys walked behind him. After a while Abu thought, “Are all my

donkeys here?” And he turned around to count them. “One, two, three, four, five,

six, seven, eight. Oh! Where’s number nine?” Abu said. He jumped down and

stood near his donkey. He looked behind the rocks. He looked behind the trees. But

there was no donkey there.

“I’ll count them again,” Abu said. “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight,

nine. Oh, he must have come back.so Abu climbed back onto the donkey. He rode

away.

Suddenly he heard a lion roar. He was afraid. Then he saw the lion come. It came near him

and roared again. Androcles was very afraid. The lion held up its paw and roared loudly.

Androcles looked at the lion’s paw. A thorn was stuck in it. Androcles gently pulled out the

thorn. The lion licked his face.
