Ask the pupils if they have ever been involved in any conservation

activities or protecting the environment. Ask pupils questions:

    - What activities have you been involved in?- Who organised the activities?- Have you seen these activities on television?- Do you know who or what ministry (explain ministry) is involved in

making sure that our forests are protected?

Show a picture of an activity where the Ministry of Industry and Primary

Akmal was not happy about what happened to Sun Bears nest. He wrote aletter to his friend Alif who works in the Ministry of Industry and Primary

    Resources.

    Dear Alif,

Last week, Sun Bears nest was destroyed. The trees were cut down! Sun Bear

was not hurt. She built a new nest on the other side of the rainforest.

Some people cut down the trees. They are going to make paper out of the trees.

They are also going to farm animals and grow crops on the land. I am worried

that they might cut down more trees. Pygmy Elephant and Proboscis Monkeys

homes might be broken next! What can I do to help look after the rainforest that

    my friends live in?

    Yours sincerely,

    Akmal

    Comprehension questions

    1. Who is Akmal writing to?2. Where does Alif work?3. Why were the rainforest trees cut down?4. What is Akmal worried about?5. Why is Akmal writing to Alif?

Listening and speaking (response)i. Draw a simple diagram on the board (See cause and effect template).

Display the pictures of a forest fire and cutting down trees to

generate discussion on causes and effects of deforestation

(removing the trees). Form a mind map of ideas with the pupils

around each picture What can they see? What do they think is

happening? Who do they think did this? Why do they think this

has been done? Ask pupils to construct simple sentences to

describe what is happening using the words they have suggested

eg, The forest is burning down. People lit a fire in the forest. The

men cut the trees down to build houses etc.

ii. Next have the pupils suggest what effects this has on the animalsliving in the rainforest. Record these ideas under Effects.

iii. Finally ask the pupils to construct a sentence explain what theresulting problem is. If pupils struggle with any of these ideas,

teachers may prompt using the completed example included here:

Causes Trees are burned Trees are cut downEffects Habitat destroyed

No food for animals No fresh air to breathe Animals have to move to other places Many animals might die therefore animals

    become extinct (explain extinct)

PROBLEM Animals have no suitable habitat to live in

iv. Teacher tells some of the roles of the ministry to conserve / protectthe forest; making sure that people are not burning the forest, no

cutting down trees without permission from the ministry.

If time is short teachers may select parts of this activity to brainstorm, and others to explain, eg brainstorm causes and effects and explain

    problem and Ministry role.

    Modelled/Class dictated writing

Tell the class that writing a letter is a good way to share and/or to ask for

information. Explain that this week they will write letters to share

information about what is happening to the rainforest and Sun bear.

Referring back to the shared reading, discuss the features of a letter.

Model writing a letter to the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources about

what happened to Sun bear and the rainforest.

    i. Think out loud:Ask pupils to suggest why trees are cut down. What do we use that is

made from trees? Draw thought bubbles on the board. Explain to the

pupils that we dont want to cut down more and more trees to make

paper. We need to protect the forest so that animals can live there. Ask

pupils what they can do to save paper so that they are not wasting it?

    paper (introduce reuse)

    Possible responses:

I will use the old paper for crafting (reduce)

    I will recycle the paper

I will collect the used paper and recycle them

I will make my own paper from old paper

    1. Who is the letter from?2. Who is the letter to?3.

How can Akmal help look after the rainforest?4. What is one way to reuse paper?

    5. Why is recycling and reusing paper good for the rainforest?Listening and Speaking (response)

    i. Explain how paper is recycled by showing the pictures attachedIf available, teachers may wish to show a short video on paper

    recycling from YouTube.

ii. Ask the pupils to list the steps on how to recycle paper. Recordthis in a diagram on the whiteboard.

e.g collect paper put them in the correct recycle bin a truck will pick

up the paper send to the factory for the recycling process

** Recycl ingmeans that the paper, glass, aluminum, steel, or plastic that you separate for recycling isre-processed, cleaned and purified and then comes back in its original form as new paper, glass, aluminum, steel or plastic.

Reusingis when you use something over and over again until it cannot be used any more. Forexample I might use a plastic spork over and over again instead of throwing it away. Or I might take a

plastic margarine container and use it for growing tomato seedlings. Or I might take my old newspapersand use them as a mulch or compost for the garden.

    Group Writing

In groups, have the students write a letter to share information about

reusing and recycling paper. The letter could be to another class

encouraging them to reuse and recycle paper, explaining why it is

important and the different ways to reuse paper.

    Dear Akmal,

It is very good to plant new trees. 100 trees is a lot to plant. It is good that your

    friends are helping you.

Did you know that in 100 years all of the rainforests might be gone? Many

animals live in the rainforests. If there are no rainforests, the animals will have

    nowhere to live.

Trees also give us clean air to breathe. If there were no trees, we would have no

    clean air to breathe!

Thank you for asking me to come to your village. I would like to come and see the

    Listening and Speaking (response)

Use the A3 picture provided to stimulate visual understanding on how the

trees are important to humans and animals. Include knowledge from

science subject. Teacher draws arrows on the picture (make sure the A3

picture is laminated / or use a visualizer) to explain the relationship

between the animals and the trees. Ask questions such as:

    - What does the sun bear need the trees for? (same can be asked forthe other animals in the picture).

    - What are the other reasons for preserving/protecting the forest?(expected responses from the pupils; keep the environment cooler,

nice view, provide shade, gives out oxygen for human and animals)

The teacher writes pupils responses on the board.

    Independent Writing

Students independently write a letter about the importance of trees. The

letter could be to the people/company who were responsible for

destroying Sun bears nest, telling them to stop deforestation and the

    reasons why.
