Engineering Excellence

IntroDUCtIon

We live in a world that is more and more global and integrated: Europe relies on the Usa which rely on asia which relies on others; companies sell their products and services on all continents and depend less and less on their national markets to succeed.

future leaders will reflect these deep changes. they will be open-minded, creative and will constantly question the way they do things. Global thinking, mobility, language knowledge, ability to work in multicultural teams will be a must.

our “Engineering Excellence E-Guide” presents you companies that are looking for global engineers.

Be curious and open-minded. the best jobs are not always where you expect to find them. Keep in mind that the perspective is global and that companies which might not be very popular in your home country maybe world leader in their field.

Face-to-Face withMarc Huygelen, AUDI AG

although he has only worked for the German car manufacturing giant for the last 3 years, the car lover gets a daily buzz out of driving one of audi’s most luxurious and successful models and knowing that he plays a part in its success. although the company is still very focused on recruiting German speaking graduates, he insists that there are plenty of opportunities for bright engineers from all sides of the spectrum.

a law graduate with an MBa, Marc Huygelen kicked off his graduate career in the global oil and gas company BP. He spent a few years on a trainee programme in the netherlands before moving on to work for Mars. But like most young graduates in their mid-twenties, Mark was hungry for a variety of experiences and was constantly on the look out for new challenges. so when the opportunity arose, he took up the roll of Hr operations manager at toyota Motor Europe. With the job of hiring both blue collar and white-collar workers to fill a number of positions, the go-getter quickly realised that Hr was for him. “all the knowledge I use now comes from then”, he says stressing the importance of the experience he gained in his youth. “the company was booming”, he recalls, “at one stage, we were recruiting 200 people. “ It was an interesting but hectic period of my life”. after it, he moved on to the multinational pharmaceutical and chemical company Zambon before continuing on to the designer and manufacturer of power generation equipment Cummins - always working within the field of Hr. In 2008, a new adventure began at audi.

Marc Huygelen talks frequently about the personal satisfaction he gets out of his job. the thing is, between 1993 and 2008, the Hr guru held down six different key roles at a variety of major companies. His reasons for leaving certain positions were down to his constant strive for variety and challenges. “But when you leave your company, you give something back”, he stresses, referring to the unique experience he took with him from every single role he had.

“all these positions prepared me for the role I have today with audi.”

When he took up with the German car manufacturer, it was a challenging time due to tense relations with the unions. “Certain things had to be done”, he says and “the capacity needed to be decreased”, he continues referring to the uncertainty of the period. But today, “the relationship with the unions is better than it has been in 30 years”, he beams. “and good relations with the unions is the driving basis for a company”.

so, now that things are booming in audi, what are the options for bright young graduates? It does after all boast seven manufacturers all around the world and in 2009 alone it scooped an operating profit of 1.17 billion Us dollars. “there are huge opportunities for engineers”, he starts. “sure, we are building the car of tomorrow in Ingolstadt”. although audi bases

can be found in Belgium, Hungary, spain, China and India, the southern Bavarian town of Ingolstadt hosts the headquarters. according to the Hr manager, in Germany alone, there are currently no less than 1,200 jobs up for grabs for all types of engineers.“We are a technical company who is very attracted to technical people”. But to work for audi, you must have the right approach. according to the Belgian, who converses through German, Dutch, french and English on a daily professional basis, audi looks for open-mindedness and enthusiasm, “employees who are not afraid to speak up”. “I am convinced that audi is definitely the best employer in Germany”, Marc exclaims, “but you need to fit into the environment”.

In return, audi employees enjoy competitive salaries, daily diversity and life-long opportunities and if they are as hard-working as Marck Huygelen, they get the chance to cruise in and out of a fantastic workplace every day in the comfort of audi’s latest model.

Candidates’ Voices: Jacqueline

With warmth that she picked up studying in the University of Edinburgh and a bubbly spirit she was born with, jackie chirps eagerly about her PhD in chemical engineering and her soft spot for rosé.

the thing is, back in 1999 when jackie did the British state exams, the a-levels, she got straight as. and a few months later, she left her native town of Manchester and travelled 300 kilometers north to the capital of scotland. after picking up an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering, she proceeded to enroll in a 5 year PhD in chemical engineering with a focus on heat transfer and flow boiling instabilities in micro channels. In order to combine her studies with some culture, jackie decided to do a joint thesis with the University of Provence in southeastern france. the joint doctorate programme meant she got to spend 18 months in both laboratories and experience not just two different countries, but brand new techniques.

although jackie finished her PhD in 2009 with a ‘très honorable’ result, the young academic is still residing in the sunny south of france. she scooped

a postdoctoral position on nanostructured surfaces and even had the chance to teach scientific English to undergraduate french engineering students. jackie really feels the benefit of the joint PhD and is delighted to have had the opportunity. “as a result of my PhD, she says, “I have become more independent, determined and have improved my analytical and decision making abilities.”

the 30 year old loves solving puzzles. so much so that she recently took up arabic to add to her french, spanish and German language skills. But she has always enjoyed learning languages and exploring cultures. In her early 20s, she backpacked all around the world. although jackie has no particular mentor who helped her follow her career path, she did get a lot of support from her parents. “Growing up and even now, I get tonnes of encouragement from my family”, she says. “But I am the only one in my family to follow the path of engineering”, she confesses, “my brother is a Latin and ancient Greek teacher!”.

for the moment, jackie is in no rush to return to her native Manchester. she is way too happy in the south of france. “I feel really integrated here”, she insists. “I love the life here and play tennis or go swimming whenever I have free time”. With a handful of job offers coming her way, why wouldn’t she be?! the bright, young engineer is at the prime of her life working in a fantastic field in a fantastic place.

jacqueline is the kind of girl you would find curled up on a beach in the south of france engrossed in a jane austen novel. But the smiley blond is not just a fan of the Mediterranean lifestyle in her adopted home of Marseille, but also of maths and physics. By méabh mcmahon

“I guess that I decided to become an engineer after a career talks at school”, she begins. “I liked the idea of studying science but also applying my knowledge in a practical way. I love research, learning new techniques and experimenting.”

expertise in microbiology, fermentation, polymer science and electrochemistry will help make possible the transition from fossil fuels to more sustainable alternatives.

together, we can feed the world. the earth’s popula-tion will increase by 150,000 people per day for the next 40 years, which means the world will need to increase food production by 70% in that same period-even as the relative number of acres that can be cultivated globally shrinks. to feed our increasing numbers, we will need to find ways to grow more food per acre.

together, we can protect what matters most. as our population grows, so do the threats to human safety and well-being. Face-to-face with Astrid Schiffer, DuPont

But for the half German-half spanish Human resources specialist astrid schiffer who started working for DuPont many years ago, there was one other reason, a special reason. It was actually thanks to a nice twist of fate and her decision to relocate to spain that introduced her to the international enterprise that employs no less than 60,000 people worldwide.

after studying international business administration in Germany, astrid decided to fulfill one of her many goals and move to spain. “My mum is spanish so I always wanted to live there”, she recalls fondly. Whilst doing an internship in the capital of Madrid, she fell for a spanish guy from the north coast of the country, from asturias. so after carrying out a master degree, she decided to look for a graduate job near his region. “In asturias there was very high unemployment rates for people under thirty so it was very difficult to find a job there, she says. “there were just not that many international companies”. But at this stage, astrid was so enchanted by the asturian traditions and her new way of life, that returning home to Germany was not on the cards... and it was just about that time when she discovered DuPont.

DuPont was a family business that was founded back in 1802. although the headquarters are located in Delaware in the Us, the sales, purchasing and distribution offices are dotted all around the world in over eighty locations, including asturias. “to my delight, there was a human resources centre

in the village of Carreño in asturias so I was hired as a staffing advisor”. today astrid schiffer is one of the main recruiters for engineers throughout the whole of Europe.

astrid now lives in the capital of asturias, in oviedo. although she is residing minutes from the mountains and the spectacular natural parks that are said to be the most beautiful and obscure in spain, every day she comes into work into a very international environment.

“so, any advice for engineers who aspire to live in sunny spain whilst working for an internationally renowned company”, I ask with a tinge of jealousy. Having interviewed hundreds of candidates from all the corners of Europe and all walks of life, astrid’s most crucial bit of advice is related to the job interview. “Don’t just say you want to have a managerial position”, she says in an almost stern manner. the thing is, according to the Hr expert, who is just after spending three months in Luxembourg recruiting, “everyone says the same thing - that they want to have a leadership position”. although astrid agrees that ambition and appetite is crucial, she

“there are 7 billion reasons to work for DuPont”, this is the recruitment catch phrase of one of the world’s most dynamic science company. referring to the fact that the world’s population is reaching 7 billion this year, the company is appealing for bright individuals from diverse backgrounds that are ready to address some of the world biggest challenges – food, energy and protection….By méabh mcmahon

“there are loads of young international people working here”, she beams. “you don’t even need to speak spanish.there is a fantastic working ambiance.”

16 engineering excellence e-GUiDe

Page 17: Engineering Excellence E-Guide 2011

cannot stress enough the importance of highlighting your exact field of work when being interviewed. “Candidates need to specify whether they want to work in manufacturing, r&D, quality or safety”, she stresses. DuPont are looking for experts willing to learn the job and company from the inside and work their way up to leadership over time and with an indepth understanding of the process.

according to astrid, DuPont is on the look out for engineers from all over Europe for their various production sites in almost every European country. and according to astrid, honesty is the key to landing one of those jobs. “If you don’t like your masters specialisation, tell us”, she insists. “We are all human”, she says. “I prefer people who tell me the truth”.

so, if you are true to yourself and pass the DuPont test, you could be jetting off to one of the 130 locations around the region to join in the success of DuPont’s third century on the go.

astrid schifferstaffing & recruiting specialist EMEa at DuPont

With graduate programmes and diverse opportunities to choose from, some engineering graduates on their field program get to try out no less than three different western European locations within the first 5 or 6 years.

Face-to-Face withJo Thys, Barry Callebaut

His unique passion and appreciation for chocolate comes from his many years of employment at the world’s largest chocolate manufacturer Barry Callebaut, a company that processes more than 550,000 tonnes of cacao beans into over 1,050,000 tonnes of chocolate products a year. since he was headhunted by the multinational to do a traineeship back in his twenties, he has soared up the professional ladder taking in a handful of international experiences on the way.

Educated in his hometown of Leuven, jo thys graduated in electrical engineering. Back in his student days when touching on a variety of topics from energy to telecommunication systems, little did he know that by 27 he would be running his own Barry Callebaut plant and jet-setting around all the corners of the world. Upon leaving Group t University College, he quickly started working for a software company in Belgium. He spent two years there. “this was a booming time for engineers”, he recalls. “jobs were plentiful”. and it wasn’t long before Barry Callebaut knocked on his door. Labelled “a young potential” by his new colleagues at Barry Callebaut, thys still remembers well the first assignment he was proposed. after successful completion of his traineeship, he was asked to be the shift supervisor of the factory in Belgium. “I was coming from a software environment and now all of a sudden I had to manage a shift”, he exclaims. “But it was a fantastic experience

and people kept encouraging me”. His colleagues told him constantly that he had to taste these experiences at the start of his career.

“I was thrown into the deep end”, he says, “but it was the right place to be thrown.”

after gaining sufficient experience as a shift manager, thys then moved on to the netherlands to run a plant, this time managing 180 people instead of 20 like before. “I learned a lot”, he assures, “and I made a lot of mistakes”. He even had the opportunity to shut down that factory and manage its move to france. and like always when one door closes, another one opens, and for the bright, young graduate, the new door lead to international destinations like Ghana and Brazil working as the main head of production for all the Barry Callebaut cocoa plants. By 2006, he was then promoted to head of operations for the americas and relocated with his wife and two small kids to Montreal and then Chicago to spend four years building brand new plants from scratch. “It was four fantastic years”, he smiles.

But since november 2009, the workaholic is back in Europe as head of Barry Callebaut’s 15

“I eat chocolate every day”, begins jo thys, “and I absolutely love it”. although the operations & supply Chain Director of Western Europe for Barry Callebaut was born and raised in the chocolate capital of Belgium, it is not the only reason for his obsession. By méabh mcmahon

European factories. But he still spends at least two days a week travelling. In order to unwind when on the go, he tries to always pack his iPod and take a good book. But he usually ends up working when on planes and trains and even ensures to take some time out to bring the local workers out for dinner when on location. “It is essential to get to know the local team and look after their needs”.

for jo thys’ children, who are all still under nine, their dad is like a character from “Charlie and the chocolate factory”. But in reality, his love for chocolate is the only thing he has in common with Willy Wonka. to get to the place he is today, you need to be “hard working, ready to take on responsibility and above all willing to travel”. “Most of our projects involve building factories abroad”, thys says, “we need young enthusiastic employees to do this”. and one last insider tip if you are being interviewed by jo thys and his team. “ask questions”, he stresses.

so from just about the time he could walk and talk, the ambitious young engineer knew he had one clear goal – that when he was big, he would set up his own company, and if possible, in the car industry.

Whilst teaching me some Hindi, rakesh talks about his fascination for history and how one of his favourite things to do is read management books. after minutes, it is easy to note that this amicable young spark will have a very prosperous future. But where will this future be I wonder? In Europe or back at home within the family business?“Well, I love Europe”, he assures. “I want to stay for a few years here, maybe even 10”, he says before talking about his international lifestyle in Wolfsburg in Germany where he currently works for the automobile Manufacturing Company Volkswagen aktiengesellschaft. “I have friends from China, turkey, Mexico, Indonesia and Ireland”, he continues. “We have a great time and I really love travelling around Germany or Europe with them whenever I have a chance”. But the motivated car fanatic has always one thing on his mind, “but then I will start my own business”.

although rakesh talks eagerly about his life in Germany, the fun he had learning the language and the social life that he now enjoys, his roots are very much back home in nashik. “It is a great city”, he remarks. “I miss it a lot and I miss the food but luckily I am a very good cook”, he assures before explaining to me in detail about all the vegetarian specialities he can concoct.

In a while, rakesh will return home to get married but he plans to bring his new wife back with to Europe to introduce her to all the quirky experiences that he has been able to enjoy. then when he is ready he will return back to nashik to be close to his family and his two brothers who work as architects and computer engineers. In due time, he will proceed to build his own little family while running his very own business. But for the moment, the outgoing technical expert is mingling at the Careers International fair, Engineering Excellence, looking to achieve any professional position that will offer him a challenging environment and continuous improvement at work.

rakesh was born about 200 kilometres from Mumbai in the “wine capital of India” in nashik. His childhood was spent learning yoga and mediation techniques from his grandfather and playing hide and seek in his father’s automobile and spare parts company. By méabh mcmahon

Candidates’ Voices: Marie

Born and raised in Leipzig, the German genius now lives in Berlin and is the only girl in her group of friends who works as an engineer. But she is the only one in the group who doesn’t even bat an eyelid now when she gets a wolf whistle on the street. the 26 year is well used to the male environment and well able to handle her peers. at the Engineering Excellence event in Brussels, she talks eagerly about her love for everything technical and her reluctance to wear anything feminine in the man’s world of engineering.

the thing is, only about one in ten engineers are female. and most women, who do take the plunge, go for environmental, biological or chemical disciplines. In today’s world, there are very few female engineers working in the physical or mechanical fields. Marie schulze is an exception.

“actually I started off studying architecture”, she admits. “I thought it would be the perfect mixture between art and science”. But within a few years, Marie knew she was mistaken and leaped straight over to the mechanical engineering lectures before proceeding to the states to do a masters. “I have no regrets”, she swears and smiles proudly before telling me about submitting her thesis just a few weeks ago.

and when she was a student, Marie had the best part time job ever – wind tunnel testing at a laboratory of fluid Dynamics. “It was such a great experience”.

Marie speaks perfect English. as back in 2008, she got a fulbright scholarship to study a master of science in engineering management in Indiana. In the states, her eyes were opened to tonnes of new techniques and different ways of working. “Women wore skirts to the plant”, she exclaims. “But I would rather not stand out”, she says. “In fact, I dress more like a man when I’m working in order to blend in”, she laughs. the thing is, according to Marie, when on site, you must deck up in safety shoes so they don’t really match your outfit anyway. for Marie, the most important thing is to be taken seriously in the workplace. and sometimes that is not easy when you are a natural blond.

freshly graduated, Marie is excited about the near future. although she has already had many professional work experiences, as did her graduate thesis with the Proctor & Gamble plant in Berlin and her master thesis with Bosch, she is looking forward to starting a new job “somewhere in Europe”, she hints.

When Marie was 16, she spent one year in Lille where she picked up fluent french. so now she is qualified her for her dream job in an international environment. Her creativity, curiosity, knowledge and skills will help her too.

It doesn’t bother Marie that so few women follow her career choice. In fact, it encourages her. “It might help me stand out in a job interview”, she giggles. she insists though that her strong personality always stands to her in tough job interviews and the fact that she has lived in so many countries. “and I am always friendly and curious about new things”, she finishes.

In 2021, Marie has no idea where she will be or what she will be doing. But she does hope to have some children whilst holding down a job of high responsibility.

Engineers must be good at maths and science and have enough ingenuity to apply them to find solutions for technical and practical problems. Marie schulze ticks all those boxes and more. on top of that, she ticks the boxes ‘outgoing, open-minded and attractive’. By méabh mcmahon

“I just love engineering because of the technical stuff. I love experimenting and I adore maths”.

Company Profile: asML

We offer engineers specialized in precision engineering, dynamics, optics, electronics and information technology the ultimate challenge to solve complex technical problems in a multidisciplinary environment.

steep curve

asML is a relatively young company, which has developed into a global market leader at unprecedented speed. In the space of 25 years we have grown from nothing into a multinational company with 55 sites in 16 countries and annual sales of 4.5 billion euros in 2010. We set the international standard with the development of wafer steppers and scan systems. to retain and expand that leading position we employ thousands of engineers and scientists exploring the frontiers of (nano)technology every day. It requires people who also constantly explore their own limits and try to push them further. Who consciously opt for the steepest learning curve.

technological race

asML works with an almost impossibly short time-to-market, driven by our customers’ competitive market conditions. It is precisely this technological race against the clock that makes working here so utterly fascinating. Cutting-edge precision engineering, dynamics, optics, electronics and information technology all come together in our company to develop systems which are more reliable, faster and more accurate than their predecessors in the shortest possible time.

It is only our unusual development method, whereby a large number of development processes are running in parallel, that enables us to constantly meet the very ambitious demands set by the market and ourselves.

Drive to develop

Working at asML requires a special attitude. an unbridled passion for technology is vital, but there’s more. Having commercial insight, team spirit and being result-oriented are all equally important, since what makes asML successful is the interplay between precision engineering, dynamics, optics, electronics and information technology. But perhaps the most important factor is a drive to grow and learn that is deeply embedded in our people. asML invests a great deal in your development. for us that is a given. In return we also expect it of you. anyone who is working on creating tomorrow must take their talents seriously today.

Do you have a technical education? and do you want to help our teams to speed up cutting-edge technology in the field of precision engineering, dynamics, optics, electronics and information technology? Please visit www.asml.com/careers

For engineers who think ahead

asml is a successful high-tech company from Veldhoven, the netherlands, which manufactures complex machines that chip manufacturers use to produce integrated circuits (ics or chips). every year, chips become faster, smaller, smarter and more energy-efficient, and breakthroughs in asml’s research labs have played an important part in making it possible. asML, one of world’s leading providers of lithography systems, develops complex machines that produce integrated circuits. Known as ICs or chips, they are becoming smaller and more energy efficient by the year. In order to produce leading edge machines, asML engineers perform in a range of fields from mechatronics and optics to electronics and information technology.

about 10 years ago, yide arrived from China to the netherlands to start a Bachelor of science program in Electrical Engineering at the tU Delft. Upon arrival, he took up Dutch language classes in order to integrate himself more efficiently and quickly into the daily life. after obtaining a Master of science degree in Microelectronics from tU Delft, he spent a number of years working as an IC designer for electronics design companies, a job he found extremely interesting.

His charismatic and talkative nature allows him to explore his capacities further. “I need to communicate a lot or I will be bored to death”, he laughs. and it was thanks to this trait that he started looking for a new challenge in the High-tech industry a few years ago and found the perfect one at asML. “nowadays, my daily work at asML is more focused on the business side of the industry”, he explains. “I am the interface between the customers and the numerous business development units within asML”. yide’s job is to listen to the requirements of the customer, no matter how

tough they may be, and then translate them into a solution product.

today, yide is not working as a full-time engineer. He is now more like a spider in the web, being involved in multi-disciplinary demanding tasks: marketing, product promotion and sales, project management and human resource activities.

“But to understand the needs of the customer, you need to be an engineer”, he insists. “My team and I come from various technical backgrounds”. yide spends about 30% of his time per year traveling around the globe visiting his customers on behalf of asML.

“asML is a truly exciting company”, he ensures. “at the moment, we are recruiting a lot”; he says hinting the company’s will to grow and reach 10,000 employees. “We are looking for graduates with the right background.” he says, “People who can explain themselves effectively in the simplest terms. In a multinational company as asML, you are more than welcome to share your thoughts with everyone else. Communication is the key”.

Candidates’ Voices: Philip

apart from having an impeccable CV, the 31 year-old american/Belgian has cycled the whole way from India to australia taking in no less than 13,000 kilometres on route – all on his own. Back in january 2009, having completed a Master degree in engineering and biochemistry and a subsequent master in business economics, the triathlete decided to fulfil one of his life long ambitions and cycle around asia. “I just took my bike and flew to India”, he grins.

there were periods when Philip cycled for days without meeting another soul and other days where he had to cycle through temperatures of 45 degrees Celsius to minus 20. some days when the route was flat, he cycled around 120 kilometres, other days he had to battle his way through ferocious windstorms and one day by the Great Wall of China, there was a sandstorm that nearly knocked him off his bike and limited his eyesight to about 20 metres. When in nepal on some of the highest and most challenging mountains in the word, he saw his lips turn blue from altitude sicknesses and when in Vietnam sleeping rough, sometimes he couldn’t catch a wink due to heat and sand blowing up his nose. But Philip was never startled. In fact, the modest mountain biker is reluctant to even say his experience was physically challenging. “It was the best experience of my life”, he admits.

today Philip resides in sydney australia and works as a senior consultant for the Portland Group. Living just between the beach and the town, he shares a sunny apartment with his Belgian girlfriend. Every morning, before cycling to work, he jogs by the beach and when he has time, he goes surfing. “australia is booming”, he says. “there are tonnes of jobs for people like me”. the thing is, before trekking around the world, Philip spent three years at accenture in London managing a global team in the supply chain opportunity assessment. “this was a hectic period of my life”, he says. “It was a very dynamic experience and I learnt a lot”.

Philip has a lovely manner. He strikes me as a fantastic team player - an asset to any company. His life in australia sounds like paradise and his role at the Portland group appears to be engaging. But the young Belgian who grew up in texas is eager to move back to Europe. “I want to be where my roots are”, he confesses. “I am always on the look out for job opportunities in Europe”, he assures, “but the job application procedure can be very lengthy”.

I can vouch for all of this and more. and if I were working in the Hr department of Callebaut or DuPont, I would snap up the highly diligent Philip before he leaps up on his mountain bike again and takes on another continent in the world. as if he does, he would be so successful out there, that he might never come back to Europe.

Events organised by Careers International always manage to bring together the brightest bunch of young graduates from all around Europe and beyond. Every single candidate that I have ever met so far is articulate, enthusiastic, multi-lingual and extremely clever. some even merit homage in the Guinness book of records for their record-breaking achievements. Meet Philip. By méabh mcmahon

the only condition for Philip is that his future job in Europe guarantees him one thing- that he can travel. the adventurous brain says on his CV that he has motivation and perseverance, is stress resistant and very independent.
