World Engineering Education Forum 2015

MESSAGE FOR CORPORATE PARTNERSThe World Engineering Education Forum (WEEF) was created as a result of conversations between executive leaders of several leading global engineering education associations, including the International Federation of Engineering Education Societies (IFEES), the Global Engineering Deans Council (GEDC), the Student Platform for Engineering Education Development (SPEED), and some multinational corporations. The hope of these leaders was to create logistical and programmatic synergies by holding one joint meeting, inviting engineering education stakeholders to participate in the larger discussions on the many issues within engineering education.  And so the rst (WEEF) was held in Singapore in October of 2010, which brought together the annual meetings of ve associations.

Corporate partners have been important contributors to the WEEF not merely as sponsors, but have been instrumental to the high quality of the WEEF’s program.  Industry representatives have consistently contributed to WEEF, including providing valuable perspectives on the attributes of engineer that they are looking for, identifying the trends in various engineering industries, and sharing valuable experiences on the successes and challenges in industry-academia partnerships.  Airbus, Boeing, Cypress, Dassault Systemes, Granta, Hewlett-Packard, Juniper, MathWorks, Quanser, Siemens, Total S.A. are just a few of the multinational corporations who have demonstrated their passion for excellence in engineering education at the WEEF.  The perspectives of global visionaries from these corporations greatly have enhanced the WEEF program.

Since then, IFEES has continued the tradition of bringing together the world’s engineering education societies once a year, from Europe (WEEF2011, Lisbon) to the Americans (WEEF2012 Buenos Aires and WEEF2013 Cartagena de Indias) and to the Middle East (WEEF2014 Dubai). Not only do international organizations bene t greatly from the Forum, but local engineering education institutions are heavily involved in the vision and execution of this event. The venue of the WEEF changes each year, and the event has brought great visibility to the local institutions which otherwise may not have had such opportunities to interact and cooperate with foreign and international engineering education organizations.

“Think Globally. Act Locally”. As communication and mobility barriers disappear and individual behavioral patterns transform, engineering educators and researchers are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of international dialogue. Global collaboration serves as a mean to discuss common challengers and new approaches to deal with them, and to share examples of good practices with the global engineering education community. At every WEEF, our aim is to help engineering education stakeholders all over the world to “think globally”, and equip them to “act locally”. You may be an electrical engineering student, who has ideas on using technology in the classroom, a representative from a global engineering company who is interested in forming partnerships with the local host university, or a civil engineering professor who is curious about the best practices in Project Based Learning. WEEF is a place for anyone who is invested in building excellence in engineering education.

Next year, WEEF 2015 Florence will bring together nine engineering education organizations: IFEES, IGIP, ENAEE, COPI, EUCEET, SEFI/EEDC, GEDC, SPEED, and BEST.  The WEEF consistently attracts hundreds of engineering students, educators, administrators and professionals from across the world. Partnering with the WEEF provides your company with value-added opportunities to create new partnerships, build relationships with prospective partners, cultivate your existing relationships with our members in order to have a competitive advantage when recruiting their top engineering graduates, and demonstrate your commitment to excellence in engineering education to a global audience.

The general theme of WEEF2015 will be on “Engineering Education for a Resilient Society”: all stakholders of EE shall focus and contribute to identify and put in place all measures in order to create future generations of engineers making out society t in terms of resilience. Major corporate stakeholders in Engineering Education will play a key-role for indicating needs, methods and good practices.

So please join us at WEEF2015 Florence, whether it is your rst time or if you have been involved from the very beginning. We welcome those who have experiences to contribute and those who are eager to learn more. For more information, please visit the o cial website at http: //www.weef2015.eu

World Engineering Education Forum 2015

A NOTE FROM THE ORGANIZERSOn November 4th, 1966 (almost fty years ago), Florence experimented the most devastating ood of modern times, where by immense losses and damages were recorded to the vaste Cultural Heritage hosted in the City’s most important monuments: frescos, paintings, ancient books, precious collections in Museums, churches, libraries etc. were lost or severely damaged. In order to recall this disastrous event, Firenze 2016 Coordinating Committee is developing a series of activities and events, of which WEEF2015 is part.

Some other city Authorities will be invited, especially those ones which have experienced a lack of resilience: New Orleans, Dresden, Prague, L’Aquila, etc., just to name a few among them.

WEEF 2015 will include the following strands, though not exclusively, given that issues that are in other ways relevant to the key theme will also be considered:

The topics around which WEEF 2015 revolves are strongly correlated to EXPO 2015 “Feeding the planet, energy for the life” to be held in Milan. The proximity –geographical, thematic, as much as in terms of timing– with EXPO 2015 will render WEEF 2015 the ideal platform for all interested delegates and participants to bene t from a dense and polyvalent experience. In less than two hours by train from Florence, the participants of WEEF 2015 will be able to attend several events and workshops at the universal exhibition of Milan, thus rendering their visit to Italy exceptionally cost-e ective.
