The lesson is destined to sharpen the pupil´s knowledge on waste, especially plastic waste.

After a sensibilisation for environmental issues, the students take action. They realise a concrete

alternative to plastic bags, implementing a change in habits and becoming multiplicators in their

families.

The class structure is divided into a theoretical and a practical part in which the upcycling-project

will be realised. To start, the teacher and pupils will work out together the key elements of the

topic, guided by the following questions:

What do we understand by waste?

What is meant by decomposition?

Which advantages and disadvantages does the use of plastic comprise?

Why are especially plastic bags an urgent issue?

Which alternatives to the use of plastic do exist and how can they be implemented?

In the second, practical part of the lesson, one possible alternative to plastic bags will be realised by

turning an old T-Shirt into a fabric bag (EcoBag). Afterwards, the use of the bag in daily life will be

discussed in class.

The Idea +++ create a sustainable bag+++learn more about waste+++

change our habits+++reduce our ecological footprint+++

Why?We use many plastic bags in our daily life. Their production is not sustainable, and the risk of

improper disposal threatening the environment is high. We present an alternative with recycled

materials to foster a healthier environment for our children!

Practical Information Target Group: class, aged 9-11

Duration: 90-120 Min

A teacher should be present during the activity. A projector would be an asset. Every child should

bring an old t-shirt, as well as scissors.
