QSTP Solar Test Facility

• Announced 18th March 2009 under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned to be established in QSTP

• Part of an integrated Qatari strategy to become a leader in the development of solar as an alternative electricity source

• GreenGulf Inc., a Qatar-based Renewable Energy Advisory business committed to addressing the issues of climate change, is developing the facility on behalf of the QSTP

A cutting-edge facility designed to deliver, test and validate a

broad range of solar technologies across the value chain

Goals and Objectives• Establish a world class facility to test new and emerging solar technologies

in order to understand their suitability for the Qatari and Gulf environments

• The facility will strive to provide an opportunity for

– QSTP, GreenGulf and other partners to develop partnerships and

generate unique IP to support roll-out of large scale solar facilities

– Partners to demonstrate and quantify the behavior of their technology in

the Qatari environment

– Training for partners and EPC suppliers in the configuration, design and

operation of solar facilities in the region

– Education City university students to study and learn about solar

technologies

– Partners to build relationships with students who can become potential

employees and ambassadors of their technology in the region

In the first phase of the project, GreenGulf will run trials of

photovoltaic and solar-thermal electricity generation

techniques.

• Williams Hybrid Power flywheel

energy storage system incorporates

Magnetically Loaded Composite

(MLC) technology

• Flywheel captures kinetic energy

generated under braking, for later

release

• Key technical benefits of MLC

flywheel compared to battery

technology:

– High specific power: >5kW.kg-1

– Very high efficiency: 96-99% (one-

way)

– Long lifetime: greater than 10million

cycles therefore low environmental

impact

– Safe, simple recycling at end of life

– Suitable for volume productio0n
