Introduction:-
y Asystem is a group of devices or objects whose interaction
serves a common purpose.y Many measures are used to evaluate how closely the design
of electronic systems and subsystems meets the desiredfunctionality and constraints. Some of the measures
include:-performance, energy and power consumption, reliability,
design and manufacturing cost.
y At the system level, there are three main sources of energy
dissipation:
y Processing units
y storage elements
y
interconnects and communication units.

Energy Efficient System Utilization:-
y While system design is concerned with selection andorganization of system components, the system utilizationaddresses the question of how those components should beused.
y
Electronic systems often consist of one or moremicroprocessors and a set of devices with multiple low-power states. Many microprocessors support dynamic clockfrequency adjustment, and some newer devices alsosupport dynamic supply voltage.
y Thus, at the system level it is possible to reduce energy bytransitioning components into low power states (dynamicpower management) and by changing the frequency andvoltage level of the microprocessor (dynamic voltagescaling).

Dynamic Voltage Scaling:-
y Dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) algorithms reduceenergy consumption by changing processor speed and
voltage at run-time depending on the needs of theapplications running.
y If only processor frequency is scaled, the total energysavings would be small as power is inverselyproportional to cycle time and energy is proportionalto the execution time and power.
y
In allDV
S approaches presented in the past, scheduling was done at the task level, assumingmultiple threads. The prediction of task executiontimes was done either using worst case executiontimes, or heuristics. Such approaches neglect that DVS
can be done.

Energy Efficient Hardware Design:-
y When designing an electronic system a designerexplores a limited number of architectural alternativesand tests their functionality, energy consumption andperformance. Traditionally, the designers aimed to meet
high performance targets with little regard to energyconsumption. Thus the whole design methodologyaimed to deliver designs capable of delivering peakperformance continually.
y Optimizing design for both performance and energyconsumption has become a priority in recent times. As aresult, the design methodologyneeds to be changed toinclude energy consumption criteria.

Energy Efficient Hardware Design:-
y The most accurate way to evaluate the design is tobuild a prototype first, but this approach does not
accurately model performance or energy consumption,is slow and very expensive. Alternatively, performancecan be evaluated using instruction-set simulators, butthere is limited or no support for energy consumptionevaluation. Commercial tools target mainly functional
verification and performance estimation, but provideno support for energy-related cost metrics.

To aware and pay attention to the power supply, as its efficiencyhas an impact on the effective power requirement of the entiresystem, including each component you selected carefully.Whether or not a PSU has a 75% or 85% efficiency (at the 20-40%load level it mostly runs at) has a measurable impact on thepower requirement and can totally negate any power-savingsmeasures you may have taken.
