Endangered Species
• Endangered – A species of plant or
animal that is immediate danger of becoming extinct and needs protection to survive
• Threatened– A species is likely to
become endangered if it is not protected

• Black Rhino of Africa• Grey wolf• African Elephant
• Extinct species– A species of plant or
animal that is no longer living
Endangered Species
• Can act as warning signs for us about problems in our environment
• If we look at the signs we may be able to fix it before we loose too much
Ways they become endangered
• Habitat loss• Illegal killing/ Invasive Species • Population and Resources • Pollution/ Pesticides• Climate Change• Overexploitation
• All living things, from mammals to plants, are connected and depend on each other for survival
• This means that not all endangered species are the big animals we think of– It had been estimated that a disappearing plant
can take with it up to 30 other species
• Endangered species show is that our world may not be as healthy as we think
So why the change
• The use of DDT was noticed
• Caused bald eagles egg shells to thin out and brake
• DDT was used on farms as a pesticide

What is being done
• 1973 the Endangered Species Act was passed
• Protect disappearing plant and animals from our ecosystems
• More than 900 species of plant and animals in the U.S. are protected
• It is illegal to import, export, or sell animals and plants on the list
How can you help
• Visit and volunteer at local wildlife refuge or nature center
• Don’t buy illegally taken species
• Don’t by products made from threatened or endangered species
