    good idea tostartbyclickingonLearnaboutEndNote, ifyouhaveneverused theprogrambefore.

    EndNotehasalotoffeaturesand,consequently,aratherlargelearningcurvefortheuserthatwantsto

    knoweverything theprogramcando. Ifyouwant tobeginand learnasyougo,youcanclickon the

    createanew library link.A library isthenameforanEndNote individualfilesthatyouwillpopulate

    withyourreferences.Youcancreateasmanylibrariesasyouwant,oneforeachproject.Ifyouhavea

    numberoflibrariesanddecidethatareferenceyouhaveinonelibrarycanalsobeusedinanother,itis

    simplyamatterofopeningeachlibraryanddraggingthereferencefromonetotheother.

    belowthemenu(2)Thewindowontheleft(3)tellsyouhavemanyreferencesinthelibraryandanygroupyou

    mayhavecreated.

    Inthemainwindow(4),youcanscrollthrougheachreferenceandsortthroughthembased

    uponauthor,year,title,journalorreferencetype.

    The window at the bottom (5) shows how the reference highlighted will appear in the

    referencefileyouhavechosen.Thedefaultstyleisannotated.

    WorkingwithReferences

    Above is an example of a completed reference in your library. You can simply type the

    appropriateinformationintothefieldsor,youcanimportreferencesfromononlinedatabase

    likeMEDLINE.Notice theReferenceType (1). Thisexample is ajournal article. Itwouldbe

    formatteddifferentlyifthetypewereabookoraconferenceproceeding.Itisagoodidea

    toincludetheabstract(2)inthereference.Youcanalsotypeinyournotesorincludequotes

    fromthearticlerightinthereference.Ifyouhaveacopyofthearticleinpdforword,youcan

    linkthereferencetothedocumentrightinEndNoteandbringitupwheneveryouwish.More

    tofollowonthat!

    UsingEndNotewithWordEndNoteworksseamlesslywithWord.Onceyouhave installedEndNote,youshouldhavean

    EndNotemenuwithinWord itself. You canuse citewhile youwriteor "CWYW to insert

    citations from EndNote into your document. At the same time, EndNotewill be creating a

    referencepageattheendofyourdocumentcorrectlyformattedinAPAstyle.

    appear,properlyformattedinthedocument.(2)ThecitationwillalsoappearinthereferencesectionattheendofthedocumentalphabeticallybyauthorandincorrectAPAstyle.

    ImportingReferencesfromaDatabasesuchasMEDLINEYoucanperformyousearchinadatabaselikeOvidMedline.Chosethereferencesyouwould

    liketosaveintoEndNotetodoyourresearch.Youchosethembycheckingtheboxtotheleftof

    thecitation.Youcansaveasmanyasyouwouldlike.Whenyouhavecompletedchoosingyour

    references,youmovetotheCitationManagerontheleftsideofthepage.TheCitation

    managerallowsyoutodosomethingwithyourselectedcitations.InthiscaseyouwanttodirectlyImportthemintoEndNote.InthefieldsboxcheckcompletecitationintheResultsformatboxcheckDirectExportandclickSave.

    FindFullTextIfyouhavecitationsinEndNoteyoucanhighlightallyourreferences,thanclickonReferences>

    FindFullText.IftextisdownloadedapaperclipwillappearinthelistingofyourReferences.

    Thiswillautomaticallysearch the fulltextsubscriptions thatUMDNJholdsand insertthe full

    textpdfintoeachcitation.Ifarticlesareonlyavailableinsubscriptiondatabases,thisfunction

    willonlywork if youareusinga computerwithaUniversity IPaddress. Itwillnotworkoff

    campus via EZ Proxy. Articles freely available can be retrieved from any computerwith an

    Internetconnection.Thisfeaturecanbeglitchyattimes.Themorecitationsyousearchfor,

    thelongerittakestoretrieveandattachthepdfarticleifitisavailable.

    ReferencesinwhichfulltextisdownloadedwillbeaddedtoatemporaryFullTextGrouponthe

    leftsideofthepage.FullTextwillberetrievedforonlyaportionofthearticleswhichyoucan

    accesselectronically.IfEndNoteisunabletodownloadthefulltextofanarticleitmayinserta

    link in theURL fieldof the reference. Theywill lack thepaper clip icon that appears in the

    recordwhenfulltextisdownloaded.ThelinkinsertedintheURLfieldwilltakeyoutotheweb

    page for the article. From there youmay be able to download the full text and attach it

    manuallytoyourreference.

    GroupsThere is a new Groups items on the EndNote menu bar. It gives access to the HideGroups/ShowGroupscommand.TheGroupspaneattheleftoftheLibrarymainwindowhasbeendividedintofivecategories:

    TemporaryGroups(Allreferences,Searchresults,ImportedReferences,Trash,etc) CustomGroups(Createdbytheuser) SmartGroups(seebelow) OnlineSearch(seebelow) EndNoteWeb(totransferreferencetoorfromEndNoteWeb)

    BesuretocheckwhichgroupyoucurrentlyhaveselectedintheGroupsPane.Functionsyou

    performwillonlyapplytothatGroup.Ifyouwantchangestoapplytotheentirelibrary,you

    mustselecttheAllReferencesGroup.

    Smart Groups are groups that you can set upwith an inbuilt search strategy.When newreferencesareaddedtotheLibrary,theyaresearchedbyeachofthesmartgroups.Iftheyfit

    theparametersofanyoftheSmartGroupssearch,theyareautomaticallyaddedtothatgroup.

    TosetupaSmartGroup,eithergotoGroups>CreateSmartGroup,orusetheSearchfunction,andclickontheOptionsbuttonandselectconverttoSmartGroup.

    ThisSmartgroupwillautomaticallysortoutthereferencesdownloadedintoEndNoteandsort

    outtheonewiththewords,liver,transplantandhavingStarzlasanauthor.Theresultswillgo

    intotheallReferencesfolderandtheonesmeetingmySmartSearchcriteriawillgointothat

    folder.

    SmartGroupscanbeusedasTemporarylocationforreferences,whichcanthanbemovedinto

    anormalCustomGroup.There isno facility formovinganungroupedreference intoaSmart

    Group.ReferencescanonlybemovedintoCustomGroups.ASmartGroupandaCustomGroup

    canhavethesamenames.

    OnlineSearchGroupsAnyconnectionfileswhichyouaremarkedasfavoriteswillbelistedintheOnlineSearchgroup

    intheGroupspane.Youcanclickonthenameoftheconnectionfileto launch itquickly.The

    search isperformed intheTabPane.Youspecifyhowmanyreferencesyouwanttoretrieve,

    andthesereferenceswillbedisplayedinthemainpaneoftheLibrary.Theseareautomaticallyaddedtoyourlibrary.

    Justbe aware the automatic addingof retrieved references to the library canbe extremely

    cumbersome. EndNote is currentlyworking on patch to fix this feature. A useful feature is

    eliminate duplicates. To activate this feature click on Edit > Preferences and selectduplicates.UnderOnlineSearchResults,checkthebox,AutomaticallyDiscardDuplicates.FoldersA major change in the X2 versions of EndNote is the location of the Filters, Styles and

    Connectionsfolders.ThelocationofthesefolderscanbeseenbyclickingonEdit>Preferences>FolderLocations.

    InearlierversionofEndNote,thesefolderswere,bydefaultstoredwiththeEndNoteProgram

    Files.Thiscaused someproblemsespeciallywithusersofVista. InEndNoteX2, theuserhas

    personalfolderswhicharelocatedat c:\DocumentsandSetting\[UserName]\MyDocuments\EndNote\ (WindowsXP) c:\Users\[UserName]\Documents\EndNote (WindowsVista)

    Newormodifiedfiler,stylesorconnectionarestoredinpersonalfolders.Ifyouwanttosavea

    filter, style or connection which you have downloaded from the web, or been sent by acolleague,youmustsaveitinyourpersonalfolder.Ifyouareeditingafilter,styleorconnectionfiltersuppliedwithEndNote,youcannotsaveyourchanges unless you have selected the personal folders in the Folders Location of thePreferences.IfyourfolderlocationsarestillpointingtotheProgramFiles,youwillnotbeable

    tosavethechanges,andyouwillnotreceiveanyerrormessageexplainingwhy.Thismay cause some confusion for experienced users who are upgrading from an earlier

    version of EndNote. The Preferences are carried over from the earlier version; their Folder

    LocationswillstillbepointingtotheProgramFiles.Theeasiestwayto fixthis istogotothe

    PreferencesandselectFolderLocations,thenclickontheEndNoteDefaultsbuttontosetupthelocationforthepersonalfolders.

    CompressingtheLibraryYoucancompressyoulibraryeasilytosaveittoajumpdriveortoemailit.Thisfunctioncanbe

    donebyclickingonFile>CompressLibrary>Librarieslargerthan4gigabytescannotbecompressed.
