If you haven't noticed, the way theworld works has changed a lot. Dailylife is going to be a lot different formy children than it was for myparents. In times of change, we yearnfor security. Unfortunately, the placesthat we've traditionally found security- career, families, culture - are wheremost of the changes are happening. One area this is obvious is the lack oftraditional job security.

From a historical perspective, it wasway easier when you knew thatsomeday you would take yourparent's job. Millers milled, Portersported, Smiths smithed (I'm pretty sureI know what my forefathers did for aliving...). Even during most of thetwentieth century, stable employmentwas the cultural norm - you workedfor the same company until they gaveyou a gold watch and (hopefully) apension.

These days, long-term stays with thesame employer aren't expected—bythe employer or the employee.Needless to say, this has caused a lotof stress as we bounce from positionto position through periods of "careertransition", trying to find a stablepaycheck in an unstable world. Even

if you are highly skilled at your trade, outside variables have a profoundimpact on your employment.

It might not be possible to get rid ofthat stress, but it is possible to mitigateit. One of the easiest ways of doingthis is through building a strongprofessional network. No matter yourindustry or profession, the moreconnections you have, and thestronger your relationships, the moresupport you will have when youtransition from one position toanother.

In “Free Agent Nation,” Daniel Pinkwrote about a trend he saw in whichshort-term work teams would cometogether to work on a project andthen disband to go onto otherprojects. Whether or not you are afreelance graphic designer orcorporate HR manager, there is muchmore fluidity in your career path. Ifyou accept that fluidity, and attemptto flow with the currents instead offighting them, your professionalopportunities will increase and yourstress hormones will decrease.

How do you go with the flow andstill pay the bills. If you are

unemployed, your most valuableresource is information: Who ishiring? What skills are employerslooking for? Who is a center ofinfluence in your profession? Whatare the trends in the industry?Although you can get some of thatinformation online, the most directway is through your contacts.Especially because they act as filters -they give you the most relevantinformation to your success becausethey want you to be successful. Theyhelp direct your attention and efforts, and make it easier for you to act onthe information, e.g., facilitate anintroduction to an important contact.

The more robust your network, then, the easier it is to find the next positionwhen your current one comes to anend. The more influence you canbring to bear from others, the better. The people in your network may beable to hire you directly, or they willhave access to people who are hiringor information on where the jobs are.Not only can this shorten the timewhen you are "between positions" or"in transition", it can make those timesan important part of your careergrowth instead of stagnation.

The key to having this network inplace is constant cultivation. Buildingyour network can't be an activity youstart the day after you are laid off - ithas to be a consistent part of yourprofessional life. Too often, peopleare scrambling to make networkingconnections, and trying to leveragethem too quickly, because they didn'tlay any foundation when they werestill employed. Take the time now tobuild those relationships, becausewhen you know that there's a safetynet of contacts and connectionsunderneath you, you won't feel thestress of walking the career tightrope. You'll know that even if you fall off, you'll have a clear path to your nextopportunity.

QuotesHide not your talents, they for

sun-dial in the shade? Benjamin Franklin

Your boss just asked you to do something, and because you wanted to make her happy, you saidyes, but now that you're back at your desk, you're steaming because you really don't have time todo what is already expected of you, let alone take on an additional responsibility. So what doyou do? According to Bonnie Lowe in a piece titled “When and how to say I just can't do it!” on theIncomeFlex Web site, it's normal to want to say yes to our superiors when we really need to sayno. Try to think of your boss's perspective-she's probably crazy busy herself and not keepingtrack of everything you are doing. And when you told her you could do the project, she probablydidn't give it a second thought. This is all likely to weigh heavily on the relationship you andyour boss have, according to Lowe. You might start stressing and hurrying, making mistakes andmissing your deadlines. So the bottom line is, you're going to have to tell your boss that as much as you'd like to help herout on this one, you just can't right now. Lowe says a good strategy is to ask your boss to helpyou prioritize what you have to do. That will give the two of you a chance to sit down and lookat the reality of your schedule. It's likely your boss will acknowledge that reality when facedwith the facts you provide, and you won't find yourself having to make excuses about your workfurther down the line.

LEWISTON, Maine (Nov. 29) –There was interest in spending timeabroad at Hebron Academy, inbuying collapsible foodconcentrate drums from Packgenand wearing Auburn-made shoeson oil-drilling platforms in thePacific.

"Our boots are engineered so theyprovide very, very good slipresistance in all temperatures," saidCarl Spang, president of FalconPerformance Footwear. "You don'twant to be slipping around on anoil rig."

Spang and a dozen othersreturned a week ago from theMaine International Trade Center'slatest trade mission to Brazil andChile. Eleven companies made thetrip, five of them -- Tex TechIndustries, Auburn Manufacturing,Falcon, Hebron Academy andPackgen -- from greater Lewiston-Auburn.

"The experience was very good,"said Spang, who also found a

natural market for the company'smining boots. "We have comeaway with two very goodpossibilities for Chile and Brazil,Chile is nearer-term. We're hopingto line up a distributor by January."

Noah Love, an admissionscounselor and Hebron grad fromthe class of 2007, said Chile wasa slightly harder sell, families tendto keep children close, but contactsmade in Brazil have promise.Twenty-five percent of the privateschool's student body isinternational. Two students fromBrazil attend now.

"In Brazil, if you have the resourcesto do so, it's sort of a given thatyou're going to send your kid to ayear abroad," Love said.

MITC President Janine Bisaillon-Cary said the center has organizedas least one trade mission a yearsince 1996. Using people on theground, the 11 companies booked105 match-making meetings inadvance with potential buyers or

business partners. The trip spannedNov. 12 to 19.

"I think the quality of the companiesare some of the best we've everhad participating," she said. "Therewas a big demand for advancedmaterials or advanced textiles. It . .. made me realize there's still quitea niche in L-A."

Packgen President John Lapoint sentDan Forte on that company'sbehalf.

"(Brazil) is one of those up-and-coming countries," he said."Between the (Petrobras) refineryand food concentrates, it really fitsus well. Dan is opening some doorsfor us, so we're excited about that."

Kathie Leonard, CEO and ownerof Auburn Manufacturing, made 10sales calls in each country in thespace of three days.

"My goal was to find out what themining industry in Chile might beusing for hotwork protection. We'vegot a lot of breadth in our productline that appealed to them,"

Leonard said. "I also found theyreally like buying Americanproducts. It's always a pleasure tohear that when you go away."

She was most surprised at thereception received by a modularinsulation kit, a product cut to fittight spaces or cover odd-shapedvalves and pipe components.Leonard overcame the languagebarrier by playing a YouTube videothat showed off how it works.

"Already one of the companies Icalled has come to me about thatproduct, asking more questions, needs more technical help,"Leonard said. "Music to my ears."

Representatives from BernsteinShur, Hydro International, Invest inMaine, Maine Central Institute,Mathews Brothers, SouthworthInternational Group and YaleCordage were also part of theBrazil-Chile mission.

on

Once you know what you want to pursue – a job or a

career – you need to figure out how to achieve your end

goal. Consider the following questions:

- What is your work experience?

If there is a particular industry in which you worked

previously, it will be easier to move from one job to

another in that same industry. For example, if you

worked in a restaurant, you are more likely to change

positions within the food-service industry. A career

change – for example from finance to social services –

might require some additional education and training.

- What is your education?

Even if your first job did not match your educational

background, your education and training can help you

move to a new position. For example, maybe you

received training in business applications and office

procedures, but your first job was filling orders in a

warehouse. The skills you gained on the job, and the

education you have, might suit you for a position with

an order fulfillment company, where you may encounter

long-term career options.

- Do you have the skills to switch from one industry to

another?

If you want to switch from one career to another, you

can. Just remember that you need to leverage the skills

you gained to meet the needs of a new career. Create a

list of your strengths and skills acquired in your previous

positions and make notes on how they would relate to a

new career.

If many of your skills are non-transferable – perhaps

because they were specialized or you worked in a small

environment that did not keep up with changing

technology – consider returning to school for some

training. Regardless of whether you can afford to quit

working to go back to school, first consider taking a

night class or two at the local community college and

explore your options.

Job Fairs are excellent places to land jobs, because employers are there specifically toline up candidates for interviews, and some even interview and hire on-the-spot. While Job Fairs can be overwhelming with many people waiting to see the sameemployer, the pressure of on-the-spot interviewing, noise and sometimesconfusion, they are often a great tool and a good way to meet companyrepresentatives face-to-face. Before you go, review some tips on participating, which will help make your Career Fair experience a positive one.

ResumesBefore the Job Fair, do a little research to find out how many companies are goingto be on site. Plan to take enough resumes for all the companies you know you’reinterested in, and at least one resume for every two companies that you’re not asinterested in. While you may think that you are indifferent in a certain company, the display or a chat with a company representative may change your mind. Besure that your resume is current and accurate. Have someone proofread thembefore you make copies! Typos and other errors can be considered sloppiness onyour part and your resume quickly “screened out” because of it. Finally, don’t beafraid to distribute your resume to company representatives, that’s what you arethere for!

Prepare a “One-Minute Commercial” Your “One-Minute Commercial” should be a compilation, summarized, of yourresume and cover letter. It should be a brief but descriptive statement about yourabilities and skills as well as what you’re looking for in a new job. It is very muchlike your objective statement. First, illustrate the important details that support yourqualifications for the position. This is your chance to let the company representativeknow why you are uniquely suited for the position you are seeking. Brevity, specificity and perhaps most importantly relativity are the keys!

While my blog, The MindfulManager, is usually about how tobecome a great manager, this postfrom it is about how to become aDream Employee--especially if you'rean individual contributor. If you're amanager, I recommend you share thiswith your team and use it to sparkconversation about how each teammember can provide the most value.

I think it's also useful as a way toprovide employees with a sense ofhow they can help influence theirdestiny during challenging times. Byconsciously looking at their jobthrough the perspective listed below, they increase their ability to stayemployed and be employable in achallenging job market.

Here's the post:

How to Become a Dream Employee

When I conduct management trainingand ask: “What do you find mostchallenging about managingpeople?”, two of the most commonfrustrations I hear from managers are:

1) “I wish my employees would showmore initiative!”

They do the minimum to solve aproblem or answer a customer’squestion, but seem to think, “How elsecan I add value?” or “What else can Ido so this problem doesn’t happenagain?”

2) “I wish my employees were lessfocused on what we can do for them, and more focused on how they helpus”

Just as employees want to know thatmanagement cares about them, management wants to believe thattheir employees have their best interestat heart and look for opportunities tohelp them achieve their goals.Questions and requests seem morefocused on themselves, rather than onhelping their manager achieve his orher goals, or their employer achieve its

goals.

You can become a manager’s dream– and be seen as a High PotentialEmployee – by adopting the mindsetof an external consultant.

Rather than think of yourself as anemployee, think of you as anindependent consultant and yourmanager as your client. As anindependent consultant, you’re notentitled to your supervisor’s “business”,you earn it. You earn it throughcontinually providing value andshowing an interest in finding ways toprovide even more value.

To Become a Dream Employee,Ask Questions

You can achieve Dream Employeestatus by applying one of the skills thathelp external consultants provide valueto their clients: asking clarity-producingquestions.

Consultants seeking to help theirclients grow their business want to askthese types of questions:

1. “What are my client’s biggestchallenges and frustrations; whatkeeps them up at night?”

2. “What are their goals andaspirations; what do they want most toaccomplish?”

3. “What obstacles keep them fromgetting where they want to go?”

4. “What drives their customers crazy– about doing business with otherbusinesses in their industry – and howcan the client use this knowledge tohelp them differentiate their businessby becoming more customer-friendly?”

5. “What processes and practices doI see in other industries that are notused in my client’s, that my client couldadapt, and would enable them toleapfrog over the competition?”

How to Apply This To Your Job

1. Tell your supervisor that you readthis article – better yet, show it to them

– and ask them if the two of you cango through these questions. Share yourdesire to provide as much value tothem and your employer as possible.

2. Tell your supervisor yourunderstanding of your employer’scurrent goals, initiatives, and priorities.Ask your supervisor for feedback onrefining and filling in the gaps of yourunderstanding. Include in thediscussion goals and key priorities ofyour department and your supervisor.

3. Ask your supervisor about theirbiggest challenges, frustrations, andwishes. Ask your supervisor how youcan be most helpful to him or herrelated to these. If you would like, youcan preface your question by saying “Iwould imagine that the kinds of thingsI can be doing to be most helpful inthese areas are _________. Are thereother things you would like to see moreof from me and our team that wouldbe helpful?”

4. Spend time thinking about how youcan help your employer andsupervisor achieve their goals andaddress their issues. Imagine you arean external consultant who wants tocontinue to earn your client’s continuedbusiness by providing tremendousvalue.

5. Keep on the lookout for ways tohelp solve the problems or achieve thegoals your supervisor shared with you.By paying attention to how otherpeople solve problems or innovatewhere you work and read about whatother business are doing. Inc.Magazine is a great source ofinnovative ideas. Talk with friends andrelatives from other industries and askthem how they solve such problemsand what they do that works.

6. Ask your supervisor for feedbackon how you can provide even morevalue to him/her and your employer.

7. Ask yourself, “What current

processes could be improved upon –made more efficient, more customer-centric, more productive, etc?”

8. Practice lateral thinking. Keep onthe lookout for examples of effectivepractices and processes you notice inother businesses. Think of how youremployer or department might be ableto adapt them—and by doing so--become more effective and profitable.

9. Engage your curiosity. Askquestions. Everywhere. All the time.

Even if your current supervisor is notparticularly interested or open to yourideas, don’t despair. The mind-set andskills you will develop will help youbecome a very unique and in-demandemployee.

A Dream Employee.

Enhancing your career can depend on how ready youare to take advantage of opportunity when it presentsitself. That means that you need to be ready tointroduce yourself quickly to people you might run intocasually in the office or in other business settings.Mike Myatt, in the article “How's your elevator pitch?”

on the Ezine Articles Web site, says that he hasseveral versions of his own introduction prepareddepending on audience, environment and need. Myatt says that a good introduction imbues youwith credibility and confidence and allows you totell others what you do and how you are workingtoward eliminating fears the company has, eradicating painful situations the company faces,or meeting needs the company has pinpointed foritself. And Myatt says you should be able to do thisin 50 words or less. So, for instance, when you run into a manager, you could introduce yourself by saying: “My nameis Jim Johnson. I'm a marketing representative. Ispecialize in making sure new clients arecomfortable in their knowledge about ourservices before they commit their money to us.And this year, I'm working toward the goal of 100percent client satisfaction.” Once you have an introduction that you like, work to perfect it. Practice it – and then use itwhen the opportunity arises.

Preparing for small moments canopen doors to a bigger future.

AUGUSTA, Maine – State LaborCommissioner Robert Winglassreleased October workforceestimates for Maine.

Seasonally-Adjusted StatewideData

Household Survey – Thepreliminary seasonally-adjustedunemployment rate for Maine was7.3 percent in October, downslightly from revised rates of 7.5percent in September and 7.6percent one year ago. The numberof unemployed totaled 50,700,down 2,100 from a year ago. TheU.S. unemployment rate was 9.0percent, little changed from 9.1percent in September and downfrom 9.7 percent a year ago.

The New England average was7.6 percent; rates in other states inthe region were 5.3 percent in NewHampshire, 5.6 percent in Vermont,7.3 percent in Massachusetts, 10.4percent in Rhode Island, and 8.7percent in Connecticut.

Payroll Survey of Businesses –According to estimates from the U.S.Bureau of Labor Statistics, nonfarmpayroll jobs were down 1,600 inOctober to a total of 596,100.Combined with a small downwardrevision to September estimates, thisreverses much of the unusually largejob gain reported for Maine amonth ago. U.S. nonfarm payrolljobs were up 80,000 in October.

These estimates continue to bevolatile from month to month, subjectto significant revisions. Nonfarm

payroll job data will bebenchmarked to a lagging but morecomprehensive count of wage andsalary jobs this winter. That data, which is collected throughunemployment insurance tax filingsof employers, indicates the numberof payroll jobs was relativelyunchanged in the first half of 2011Not Seasonally-Adjusted SubstateData

The not seasonally-adjustedstatewide unemployment rate was6.6 percent in October, down from6.9 percent a year ago. Notseasonally-adjusted rates rangedfrom 5.5 percent in CumberlandCounty to 9.3 percent in SomersetCounty. Rates tended to be lowerthan the statewide average incoastal counties and higher thanaverage among northern and rimcounties. Among metro areas, unemployment rates were lowerthan the statewide average inPortland-South Portland-Biddeford(5.5 percent) and Bangor (6.1percent) and slightly higher inLewiston-Auburn (6.7 percent).Detailed labor force andunemployment data for the state, counties, and 31 labor marketareas; nonfarm jobs data for thestate and the three metropolitanareas; and much more data isavailable atwww.maine.gov/labor/cwri/data.html.

November data is scheduled forrelease Tuesday, December 20.

Be sure to include some accomplishments for each position you’ve

held. For example, if you were a salesperson you might include

information like “increased sales by 25 percent my first year by

attending industry trade shows,” or if you are an accountant, maybe

you “saved the company 20 percent by comparing long distance

options.” Make sure any claims you make are true and that you can

provide proof if asked.

What, in fact, does it mean to be reasonable? What does it mean to be unreasonable?

And what does it mean to reason?

According to James Allen in “As a Man Thinketh”, when we declare someone as being

unreasonable, we usually mean that he or she is violating the ideal of thinking about

something and arriving at the “truth” of a situation by using intellect.

So it follows that people who are dubbed reasonable in situations are looked upon as

using their higher powers of intellect to make a decision and in ways that are likely

considered gentle and compassionate.

Now, we've all been unreasonable in life at one time or another-that is we've lost touch

with our higher selves and resorted to our lower faculties during which we behaved in

ways that were likely considered unthinking and selfish. Most people feel unhappy or

undone when they abandon reason for something more akin to animal behavior. But

how does a person remain reasonable throughout some of the stressful sit¬uations that

seem to be just around each corner in life? Here are some tips for trying to maintain

your equilibrium in life's trials:

• Stop before you speak or act. Think about what you are about to say or do?

Is it unkind? Is it vengeful? Is it self-centered? If so, you may have just thrown

off the cloak of reason and donned unreasonableness.

• Is what you are considering saying or doing sweet and forgiving? Is it gently

persuasive?

• Is what you are about to do or say based on any type of prejudice?

• Are you trying to prove or disprove something?

• Have you carefully weighed and considered everything important about the

situation?

• Is what you are about to do or say kind, moderate and just?
