Dear hospitality young professional,

We are proud to present to you the 5th edition of the European Mise en Place Cup (EMCup). This prestigious cup amongst students from the best hotel management schools in Europe has evolved into a well-established event!

During the last edition of the EMCup, we achieved a participation of as many as 20 hotel management schools. For the upcoming edition, we have set the bar even higher and we intend to attract 25 participating schools from at least 10 European countries.

The EMCup is aimed at ‘I-do-dare students’, those who stand out from the crowd and show courage and entrepreneurship with a great level of commitment. With this annual competition we offer students the chance to make a difference with their vision and ideas. The goal of the EMCup is to challenge students to think out of the box about a real life topic. The methods used are innovative, giving the students an energy boost and inspiring them to take part in activities like speed-dating, personal pitches, multimedia presentations and various opportunities to network. The theme for this year’s competition focuses on cruise management.

Besides the ‘24h ideations’ competition in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, the students get the chance to get in touch with professionals from the worldwide hospitality industry in order to establish contacts for the next step in their career as a young professional.

We wish all participating schools and students lots of success with the preparation, participation and off course a great time with many adventurous hours in Amsterdam!

On behalf of the EMCup organisation,With kind regards,

Charles van GochCEO Mise en Place

What is EMCup?The European Mise en Place Cup (EMCup) is an initiative of HotelloTOP and co-creator Mise en Place. The EMCup is a competition amongst international hotel management schools and was founded in 2009.

The EMCup draws upon the quality, knowledge en competences of hotel management students and is focused on concept development within the hospitality industry. The competition is aimed at motivated ‘I-do-dare-students’ who believe that their ideas or experiences make a difference in the hospitality industry.

In 2013 the EMCup will celebrate its fifth anniversary. In 2012 we managed to bring together twenty European hotel management schools and the goal for upcoming edition is to welcome at least twenty-five participating schools, creating more international encounters than ever before! Do you want to be part of this unforgettable experience? Register now for the EMCup 2013!

We are looking forward to welcoming you in Amsterdam on the 9th and 10th of January 2013!

“So many remarkable and noticeable changes from the past few years – each year the competition is

brought to a higher level!”

Contest 2012Last year’s edition of the EMCup was devoted to the theme ‘SHEconomy, what SHE can do for your business’; a topic of great importance to every young hotel management student with an eager eye for the future.

The CasesIn the months prior to the competition the students had to work out three (pre-)assignments. They started with creating ‘Rumor around the Brand’ by promoting their school, team and the competition via social media channels. Furthermore they had to create a short movie to introduce themselves to the other participants.

Subsequently, the participants wrote a paper, focusing on the female guest of 2020. The students were challenged to investigate the influence of women in the future. Each team was free to give their own interpretation about ‘SHEconomy’. At the first competition day the teams took the stage at the Horecava hospitality trade show, and presented their findings about ‘SHEconomy’.

On the second competition day the teams received the final assignment of the ‘24h Ideations’ concept. The challenge was to create a product/service specific to the hospitality branch and based on ‘SHEconomy’. The teams had 1,5 hours to brainstorm and to create their ‘best ideas’.

Afterwards, the ideas were presented to a prominent business jury. The three ‘best ideas’ were selected to compete in the finale.

Cruise Management ‘Success is a moving target’

The cruise industry is the fastest growing travel sector in the world, with over 10.000.000 people taking a cruise per year. Around 80% of the cruises take place in North American waters, but times are changing! Europe is becoming increasingly important for the

cruise industry. The Mediterranean sea, as well as the Baltic sea, are popular cruise destinations. But at the same time, a growing amount of European citizens is spending their holiday on board of a cruise ship.

Considering the fact that the cruise industry is booming business, it is also an increasingly important topic at the various European hotel management schools. The large cruise lines are investing in education programs and staff training, and there are many growth possibilities in the entire industry. That’s why, for the 2013 edition of the EMCup, we decided to let the young professionals from the various European hotel management schools give their vision on this topic. We are curious to hear the ideas of the participating teams and are convinced that this year’s theme will lead to yet another successful edition of the EMCup!

Theme 2013Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne

This was the first time the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne was participating in the EMCup. It was a really nice opportunity meeting with students and faculty members from other schools, sharing experiences and networking. This is also a unique experience for students. This type of event allows them to think out of the box, be creative, confront their ideas to other students and get feedback from professionals. It allows them to have a much more open mind in a continuously changing economy. Thank you to the EMCup organisation and hope to see you next year.

Alain Najar, MBA, CHEProfessor Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne

Hospitality Business School Saxion Participating in the EMCup is really a unique and special event. As a student, you have the opportunity to enlarge your network, to meet international fellow students and to increase your knowledge about a specific subject in the hospitality industry.

Winners 2012BE WHO YOU ARE!

In a world full of expectations and rules it can be hard to step into it without changing what you do, in what you believe and what you really love. So many people are living in a bubble which is

made not by them but by someone else. It is like living someone else’s life. A dogma which influences what you do.

When we started thinking about our philosophy for the EMCup we also begun to break some of these rules and procedures of our society. Our main objective was to be who we actually are. Acting how we feel comfortable, just saying and showing what needs to be said and shown in a simple way so everybody can follow. It often means to be different. We do not really know why it is like this. Why do you need to be different, just to be yourself.

The most unexpected for us was to win the EMCup. We really did not think we could make this happen. We say thanks to everybody who supported us, especially to our coaches Mrs. Böckmann, Mr. Werner and Mr. Becker who has accompanied us on our journey to Amsterdam.

Be who you are!

HRC InternationalHRC International is proud to be part of the fifth annual EMCup. We are extremely happy to see a growing number of well known international hotel management schools participating.

We have visited most of these schools over the past 16 years and the EMCup is a great new way to meet another group of wonderful students.

Year after year the competition is getting more and more interesting and challenging and therefore tougher for the competing teams. We

wish you all good luck, lots of success and creativity before and during the competition. Besides that, we look forward to assisting you with an exciting career program after your graduation in a renowned hotel in the USA or in China.

“Success seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don’t quit.” Conrad Hilton Floris DrabbeGeneral Manager HRC InternationalEMCup Advisory Council

EurhodipThe EMCup is an added value for all Eurhodip member schools. As president of Eurhodip and educationalist I am very impressed by the quality and possibilities the EMCup creates for all our students.

The aim of this international contest is to enhance the international focus and creativity of the participating students. The hospitality education of today needs curricula, which pays attention to three C’s representing the competencies: Completeness, Customer-orientation and Creativity.

The framework of the EMCup has a line out which meets these important competencies. In teams, the students work together in order to find solutions in the context of an international brain forum.

The benefit for the competence development of participating students is unique and will motivate them to cooperate in the global context of the hospitality industry.

I highly recommend all our member schools to participate in this international contest offering our students a new way to global professionalism and broader business insights.

Hosting City: AmsterdamWe invite you to our country’s capital; Amsterdam. Amsterdam is a conveniently sized city, but with the heart of a large metropolis.

Approximately 4.5 million people worldwide come to Amsterdam each year; this makes Amsterdam the fourth most visited city in Europe. The most famous attractions in the Netherlands can be found in Amsterdam; like a boat trip over the canals, a visit to the Anne Frank House or the Van Gogh Museum. Furthermore, the city offers lots of restaurants, pubs and cafés.

The competition days of the EMCup will be held at the Horecava in Amsterdam RAI, Exhibition and Congress Centre. The Horecava is an annual hospitality tradeshow held in Amsterdam since 1957. It is the largest hospitality tradeshow in the Netherlands.

More than just a competition: ‘Meet your roots’In our constantly changing world it is vital to share experiences and insights with likeminded colleagues. Today’s market situation forces us to develop new ways of thinking to become successful. The source of improvement is the reality. After that, the process of development, innovation and experimenting starts.

That is why the true value of this competition does not lie in the competition itself, but around it. Ask any

well respected hotel management school alumnus, how they have been able to accomplish their success and the majority will include ‘network’ to their answer. By sharing an idea, and feeding it with ideas from other professionals, it becomes a great business idea. This is what HotelloTOP is specialized in: ‘meeting your roots’ by offering a network with over five-thousand professionals. While organizing events and offering tools, networking is always the key element, in everything we did in the past and we will do in the future.

We encourage you to grab the opportunity to compete in the EMCup with both hands. We wish that you will have a successful and meaningful competition, but most important, that this will be a first step for you as a young professional to expand your network and develop your career.

See you at the EMCup 2013!
