Objective: To estimate the prevalence of malnutrition in children under five .

Methods: 505 child were studied according to standard WHO methodology for nutritional surveys in Mocha district, Yemen Republic.

Results

While there was higher prevalence of stunting (57.34%) and underweight (52.47%) in Mocha than the national levels, levels of wasting were lesser (8.91%). Inspite of higher prevalence of all types of malnutrition among males than females this was only significant in case of wasting. The difference in malnutrition among different age groups was also non-significant.

Conclusion

Since the pattern of malnutrition in Mocha indicates more a chronic type of malnutrition that may detrimentally affect later on the intellectual capacities and social behavior of affected children, prevention and early detection and treatment of malnutrition were recommended
