Principal’s Report This is our last edition of our school newsletter for 2013 and what an exciting way to wrap up the term and the year! We had our new format Presentation Day for all students K-12 on Tuesday 10 December which saw over 260 students, parents, teachers and community members in attendance. The biggest school event by far that I have attended! It has been great to gauge people’s response to the new format which has all been very positive despite a few minor glitches. Your ideas on how to improve the day have been taken on board and we will see an even bigger and better Presentation Day in 2014. I would like to thank all our sponsors, individuals, businesses, community organisations and especially the P&C for their support of this event. There are many photos throughout the newsletter for your enjoyment. Please contact the school if you would like a copy of any of them. Thank you to Donna Forrester who took photos on the day.

Yearly Reports will be sent home this week for students in Years K-10. Please contact the school if you wish to discuss any aspect of these reports or any aspect of your child’s education. Also find on the back page of this newsletter, book and equipment requirements for 2014. Remember Term 1 starts on Tuesday 28 January 2014 for staff, Wednesday 29 January 2014 for students in Years 1 -12, and Thursday 30 January 2014 for Kindergarten students. Finally, as school comes to close for another year I would like to wish everyone an enjoyable Christmas and a safe holiday period. I look forward to working with you all in 2014.

In attempt to smooth the transition from classroom to home in the afternoons a new initiative has been implemented. All parents are encouraged to put tags on their child/children’s bags so that students remember how they are getting home each day. This will also make it easier for teachers to know what is

happening day to day and ensure that students are in the right place at the right time.

Congratulations to all students who took part in the School Swimming Scheme. This

program was a wonderful opportunity for students to learn how to swim under the

tutoring of Jennylyn King, Di Carter, Sue Howarth and Tammy Russell from the

school and Yvonne Pegus and Melanie Isaacs from the community. The scheme was compulsory for all Year 2

students and strongly recommended for students who are unable to swim 25m confidently. All students are

to be commended for their efforts. Thank you to Chris Jefferies for transporting students to and from the pool

for the duration of the scheme.

Congratulations to all Pre-school students who completed the Early Starters program on Friday 6 December. All students have blended into the school setting with great ease and are now ready to tackle the challenges that 2014 has to offer. Thank you to Mrs Middlemiss and Mrs Summerell for working with students during this transition phase.

Pictured below are students being presented with a certificate to celebrate their achievements. We look forward to seeing their bright and bubbly faces again in 2014. Early Starter Graduates: Jai Howarth, Dustin Hiscock, Clayton Peters, Sonny Jennar, Lindsay Wallace, Isiah Wheeler, Cobie Walkom, Keiana Brighton, Phoebe Wilson and Chelsea Inwards.

Students in Years 5, 6 and 7 were invited to a Golf Workshop at the Barraba Golf Club last Thursday 5 December. It was an opportunity for the students to learn and practice a new skill and to promote the game amongst the younger population. Members of the club volunteered their time to provide their experience and wisdom. The day started with a quick warm up where many of the students tried their best 'Happy Gilmore' and a BBQ lunch provided by the club. We then broke into teams of 4, each

with their own mentor for a modified 3 hole School Championship. It was close, but in the end 'The Golfers' team took out the Championships with a low score of 9. Huge thanks to the Barraba Golf Club and its members for taking their time to help out our young golfers. Pictured is the winning team: Callan Mallise, Hamish Nicholson, Natahsa Robinson and Breanna Haines with Club President Peter York.

Pictured to the right is Cody Atkinson who was a former BCS student completing his Higher School Certificate in 2011. Cody joined the RAAF in February 2013 and is now an Armament Technician. Cody received Dux of his class for 2013 and aims to become a fighter pilot in the future. Congratulations to Cody for achieving such fantastic results and for making our country proud.

Many of the students’ laptop charger cords have been taken home and not returned to school. Jason, the TSO, is currently doing a stocktake and maintenance run and therefore needs all laptops and chargers handed in to his office. Parents are asked to help by encouraging their children to scout around at home to find the

missing chargers and to bring them back to school as soon as possible.

On Thursday 12 December the Year 9 debating team and Rotary Club participated in a debate on the topic: "That students who receive bad reports should attend school over Christmas to improve their results." Fortunately for the students the negative side won the debate, with spirited performances from Georgia Geddes, Regina Simpson, Rhys Phillips and Richard Witten, defeating Daniel York, Jack Reed, David Penna and Jill Turnlin. The class would like to thank Mrs Brodbeck for adjudicating, Mr Penna for organising and the entire Rotary Club for the time they have donated this year.

Under the supervision of Miss Bonnie Sevil, the Year 11 Hospitality class catered for the Rotary Club debate held on Wednesday 12 December. They served pineapple and coconut slice, poppy seed and citrus cake, chocolate brownies, orange and chocolate cupcakes and pizza swirls. They also served coffees including cappuccinos and hot chocolate. Students are to be praised for their efforts and enthusiasm. Well done!

Parent tips Primary and High school

Ready for high school Can you recall what you were most apprehensive about when you started high school? This video of Year 7 students explain why teens shouldn’t be worried about starting high school, and how they can get off to a great start in the first

Does your child use Kik? Police have described it as ''the No.1 social media problem involving teenagers'', but most parents would barely have heard of messaging app Kik before last week.

Tamworth Regional Council is currently in the process of updating the TRC Bike Plan. Part of the process of updating the Bike Plan is obtaining feedback through a community survey. The aim of Council’s Bike Plan is to set some objectives that are achievable over the coming years. One of the objectives will involve establishing a priority list for installation of bike paths and bike facilities (such as secure parking areas for

bikes). Attached is the link to an online survey. The survey is tailored to all levels of cyclists – even non-cyclists. The TRC is inviting high school students and upper primary students to take part in this survey. The survey is open until 20 December and can be accessed through the following link http://floq.co/3bIXJ.
