SUMMARY

An EM16R survey was carried out over four mining claims lo

cated northeast of Kirkland Lake in east central Tannahill

Township. The EM16R unit is used to determine the apparent

resistivity of the earth by a magnetotelluric measurement of the

radiated field from a remote radio transmitter.(Scott 1974) Sur

vey data produced is almost equivalent to normal resistivity

equipment.

Survey results indicate low resistivity and phase angle

values occur over most of the property. This is possibly due to

the depth of penetration being severely limited by a thick layer

of conductive overburden consisting of glaciolacustrine clay and

muskeg. A small resistivity high in the south west corner of

claim L 844027 is interpreted as a possible change in overburden

composition (ie. sand and gravel).

LOCATION AND ACCESS

The TA2 property is located northeast of Kirkland Lake in

the east central portion of Tannahill Township. The Magusi River

flows south through the central portion of the property then

swings east along the southern boundary towards Dokis Township.

Access is via helicopter. Two landing pads have been cut,

one is located on the east bank of the Magusi River at

LH-40E/1 + 25N and the other is located centrally on the western

part of the property at L250W/0+75N.

A winter road constructed for the OGS in 1988 crosses the

property. Commencing along the Harker-Holloway road in northern

Elliot Township, the winding road is followed from the Harker-

Holloway northeast to approximately the 1.5 mile post of the

Tannahill-Holloway Township boundary where the road crosses the

Magusi River. At this point the road turns southeast towards the

property.

PROPERTY DESCRIPTION

The TA2 Grid consists of 12 unpatented mining claims located

in Tannahill Township, Larder Lake Mining Division. This report

covers the four claims L 858412, L 858417, L 858420 and L 844027.

Three of these claims are located on the west side of the Magusi

River, and one is located 1/2 miles to the east on the east side

of the Magusi River.

(4)

Page 7: EM16R SUR RPT GRID TA2

TOPOGRAPHY AND VEGETATION

A high esker ridge 200-300m wide consisting of sand and

gravel runs north and south along the east side of the Magusi

River between the single eastern claim mapped and the three west

ern claims mapped.

The esker ridge is flanked by low lying glaciolacustrine

clay most often covered by wet muskeg swamp, A clay and sand

ridge 3 to 7m high runs NE to SW across the northwest half of

claim L 858412.

High ridges of outcrop occur along the western boundary of

the three western claims mapped and north of the single eastern

claim.

All drainage is into the Magusi River which flows southeast

towards Dokis Township. The river is 15 to 20m wide with many

tight reversing meanders. Banks are steep ranging in height from

l to 3m and consists of dominantly clay.

65?S of the area is covered by low lying swamp containing

spruce, pine and tagalders. Dryer areas are covered by mixed

bush, pine stands and the occasional poplar stands.

GEOLOGY

Tannahill Township is underlain by Early Precambrian

(Archean) volcanic rocks. The rocks are dominantly calc-alkaline

(Blake River Group) suite flows and pyroclastics. Magnesium

Tholeiitic flows (Kinojevis Group) rocks occur in the northwes

tern corner of the township. In this area occurs the Blake River

Group Kinojevis Group contact.

The Blake River Group volcanics form a large east trending

synclinorium that extends from Benoit Township east into the

Noranda area. The source of the volcanics is postulated as being

a domal volcanic vent located along the axis of the synclinorium

in Clifford and Ben Nevis Townships.

The calc-alkaline volcanic rocks consists of basalt, an

desite, dacite and rhyolite. 80?S of this is basalt and andesite.

The general strike of these rocks is northeast with tops to

the south. An eastwest anticli

ne occurs in southern Tannahill Township with a complimentary

syncline occurring to the north. These are interpreted as local

folding that reflect the domal volcanic centres to the south

(Jensen 1978). Northeast and north northwest regional faults

cross the area.

(6)

Page 9: EM16R SUR RPT GRID TA2

Circular stocks of gabbro, quartz gabbro and diorite occupy

8 to IQSi of the Township. 2 to 4?S of rocks in the area are

syenitic intrusives. The syenitic intrusives occur only in the

south western part of the Township.

The only outcrops near the area of the survey occur west of

claim L-844027 and appear to be dioritic and along the north

boundary of claim 858420 were andesite outcrops.

PREVIOUS WORK

Geox conducted magnetic and VLF-EM surveys over four claims

to the west of the Magusi River in July and August 1980 for Fal

conbridge Limited, The surveys located a magnetic anomaly on the

southern claims and weak VLF anomalies to the north.

LAC Minerals Ltd. has carried out line cutting, a magnetic

survey, a VLF-EM survey and geological mapping.

Page 10: EM16R SUR RPT GRID TA2

THE VLF-EM16R (RADIOHM) SURVEY METHOD

The EM16R measures the ratio and the phase angle between the

horizontal electric and magnetic fields of the wave propagated by

a distant VLF radio transmitter in order to determine the

electrical resistivity of the ground. In the case where the

earth is of uniform resistivity there is a phase angle of 45 DEG

between these field components. Where horizontal stratification

exists and the earth is not of uniform resistivity the phase

angle will generally decrease when a lower more resistive layer

is present and increase when a more conductive layer is present.

The effective penetration depth of this survey method

depends primarily on the electrical resistivity of the earth and

very slightly on the frequency of the transmitting station. As

can be seen in Fig 3, the higher the terrain resistivity, the

greater the effective depth of penetration.

(8)

Page 11: EM16R SUR RPT GRID TA2

From the low resistivity and phase angle values observed

over the property, it is apparent that the depth of penetration

was severely limited by a layer of conductive overburden (glacial

lacustrine clay and muskeg).

The resistivity high observed in the southwest corner of the

claim L 844027 is located over a topographic high and is likely

the result of a change in overburden composition and thickness.

RECOMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSIONS

The presence of a thick zone of conductive overburden con

sisting of clay and muskeg appears to have severely limited the

depth of overburden penetration by this survey method. This is

substantiated by the low resistivity and phase angle values ob

served over the property except in the southwest corner of claim

L 844027.

The resistivity high is probably the result of a change in

overburden (ie. sand and gravel) and a corresponding topographic

high.
