Surf Life Saving Australia

Surf bathing became popular around 1902 but as popularity increased the inherent dangers of the surf became more apparent and experienced surfers were frequently called upon to help rescue the unsuspecting public. So began the first lifesaving groups. As a result the NSW Surf Bathing Association was formed on 18th October 1907 and in 1991 it was renamed to become Surf Life Saving Australia. Surf Life Saving Australia has evolved into an organisation known throughout the world for its voluntary humanitarian service.

Formed in 1957 the Club has grown steadily. Each year we have been able to add to our equipment requirements and amenities; and through the generous contributions these are getting better all the time. Our Club, along with Port Douglas in the north to Rainbow Bay in the south are affiliated with Surf Lifesaving Queensland Inc.

Our membership caters for all ages in a number of groups:

Patrolling

The Club signs an Annual Patrol Agreement with Surf Lifesaving Queensland and North Queensland Branch to provide beach patrols during the period April to November each year. Active members will be allocated a patrol and are expected to undertake their rostered duties as required for that Patrol. The reason the Club exists is to ensure that the public have a safe marine environment at Ellis Beach. The Club cannot compete in Surf carnivals, including Junior Carnivals, if it does not fulfil its obligations under its Patrol Agreement. Members seeking to rejoin and new members must understand that the purpose of the Surf Lifesaving movement is to provide community service on our beaches.

Membership Protection Policy

Surf Life Saving Queensland has a strict Membership Protection Policy. Its aim is to protect all members from harassment and intimidation. Ellis Beach SLSC is committed to fostering a family based atmosphere. A copy of the Protection Policy can be found on the noticeboard.

It is a requirement of law that all members training, coaching and supervising children are required to hold a Blue Card. Your application for a Blue card can be lodged with Amanda Viney at the Club Office.

Ellis Beach SLSC Website

Gabrielle of Justpurple new media has set up and maintains our club website. We can now be found at [email protected]. The website is designed to keep all members well informed on the club, its direction and what’s happening when. If you need to check on dates, events, and news it’s the place to go.

Road Crossing

Juniors require adult supervision when crossing the highway. Juniors are to cross the highway at the signed area.

Grievances

From time to time an issue may arise that is more than just the grumblings of a member who is out of sorts. If you feel that a policy has been breached, particularly if it relates to member protection, you are encouraged to report the issue. Ellis Beach Surf Life Saving Club has a grievance handling procedure and one of the following pathways should be taken: For patrol related issues: first talk to your Patrol Captain. If this is not possible, or you are not happy with the response, then put your complaint in writing addressed to the Club Captain or seek out the Active on Committee for help. For non-patrol issues; a letter addressed to the Club Secretary (or Junior Activities Secretary) is the first step. Always put your issue down in writing so that you are not misunderstood and your message cannot become misconstrued.

Page 7 of 23 last updated April 2012

Ellis Beach SLSC Information Booklet – 2013/2014 Season

The Secretary will take your issue to the Management Committee to be addressed and you will be notified of any procedures that follow. In the event that more needs to be done you may be referred to a Grievance Officer who will focus on investigating your claim and may call a judicial hearing. If you are dissatisfied with the outcome of the hearing you can ask that an independent Judiciary hear your case, and if necessary appeal at an even higher level. Grievances that reach these levels are typically severe in nature, take time to be resolved and the resolution doesn’t always work in everyone’s favour. Fortunately most problems can be sorted out quickly if the right people are alerted straight away.

Kitchen Roster

To reduce the incidence of “every Sunday in the kitchen”, a roster has been created. On your nominated day please make your way to the kitchen at 10am. Please assist on these days as everyone loves good food after a morning on the beach. Your help will be greatly appreciated and funds raised go straight back into the club.

Club Championships

Club Championships will be held on the 20th October, 2013. Cadet to Masters can compete at Club Championships.

Fundraising

Surf Lifesaving is a community-based volunteer organisation which, to a great extent, is self funding. Some Grants are available as is sponsorship from interested and committed companies and sponsors, but largely the Club has to raise its own funds to survive.

The Club runs a number of fund-raising ventures during the season. These may include a monster raffle, car wash, door knock, support for our surf girl and collections at the Amateurs Race Carnival.

It is requested for all Club Members to take part in the following minimum fundraising activity during the year:

1. Surf Week Appeal – 23rd November to 1st December, 2013 Each year in November the North Queensland Branch collect money in the city and selected suburbs. All members are expected to participate as funds raised benefit our club. This event is sponsored by Channel 9 and Westpac Bank and is a Queensland wide fundraiser.

2. Amateurs Race Day Collections – 6th & 7th September, 2013The Club has over several years collected funds at the Amateur Race Meeting held over 2 days in September. Members will be approached to take part in a roster for collection.

Ellis Beach SLSC Dormitories Policy

The Ellis Beach SLSC dormitories are available to all financial club members to use. There are 10 bunks in both the female and male dorms and there are a few more mattresses for more members if some want to sleep on the floor. The Dorm may be used by Club Members only but it MUST be BOOKED through the Administration Officer and APPROVED by the club Management Committee.

Under 6 & Under 7 Age Groups

The U6 & U7 age groups at the Ellis Beach SLSC are a fun based category with lots of games and activities for the kids to take part in. With these age groups a parent or guardian must join the club as a member as well. We also need as much help as possible from the parents & guardians in these age groups to make the Surf activities as safe and as much fun as we can.

The Under 6 & 7 Age Groups do not compete at the Surf Carnivals but they are more than welcome to come along and experience them for the future.

Nippers Signing in and Signing Out

ALL NIPPERS MUST be signed in at the start of training and signed out at the conclusion of training on the beach.

Each Age Group has a folder with a sheet to sign in and out on.

These are located on the picnic table. It is the parent’s responsibility to sign in and out

If you have any queries please see your Age Manager.

This is a requirement of our insurance and it is a good check to know who is at the beach for nippers each training day. It is also used to record attendance and participation for end of year awards.

NQB Shirts Policy

In order to protect our junior competitors from the Nth Qld sun, a resolution passed by the NQ Branch Executive and Council committee members for long sleeved rash shirts to gradually phased in and become mandatory for all junior competitors by the start of the Nth Qld Branch Surf Sports season of 2009/2010. Junior competitors will have the option of wearing the following during beach events:

Long sleeved club shirts Long sleeved rash shirts Full length stinger suits

Marine Stingers & Stinger Suits

A quick note for those interested in information about marine stingers. The club has some CD’s to lend on the creatures. 'MARINE STINGER FIRST AID' is an important part of being a life saver in the northern parts of Australia. By doing your “FIRST AID” or “BRONZE MEDALLION” with surf life saving you will be taught the best way to treat a sting. ..and also how to prevent yourself and others from being stung. The Ellis Beach SLSC and North Queensland Branch organises annual lectures from specialists in the field and will provide as much information as we have on hand. The nippers train in stinger suits and this is also a sun smart way of training.

Page 13 of 23 last updated April 2012

Ellis Beach SLSC Information Booklet – 2013/2014 Season

With the current information available we are doing as much as possible to enjoy our environment with the stingers. This is still a growing area of knowledge ....so conditions change from season to season. Wear a stinger suit....Swim between the Flags and definitely in the nets during stinger season.
