SAFE Patrol

The SAFE Patrol is located in the Roadway Assistance Branch of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Division of Transportation Security. It is a part of a comprehensive incident management initiative to improve safety and reduce delay caused by non-recurring congestion and improve operations of the freeway system.

What does the SAFE Patrol do? The Safety Assistance for Freeway Emergencies (SAFE) Patrol is designed to aid motorists and assist with incident management.

How much does the service cost? The service is free of charge; however, if a wrecker is required the motorist is responsible for payment.

Is there a number to call if I am stranded and need assistance? Yes, 877-FOR-KYTC or 877-367-5982. This number will ring into the Transportation Operations Center and a TOC specialist will dispatch the closest SAFE Patrol Operator.

SAFE Patrol Services

SAFE Patrol operators patrol approximately 1,025 miles of Kentucky’s interstates and parkways, daily, with an additional 416 miles that are covered during an emergency situation.

Operators assist motorists by providing the following services free of charge:

• GASOLINE AND OIL FOR THOSE IN NEED

• ADD AIR TO TIRES OR CHANGE FLAT TIRES

• PROVIDE A “JUMP” FOR DEAD BATTERIES

• OTHER MINOR AUTOMOTIVE REPAIRS

In addition to the above duties, SAFE Patrol Operators perform these services, also:

• ASSIST LAW ENFORCEMENT BY DIRECTING TRAFFIC AT INCIDENT SCENES TO KEEP TRAFFIC

• MOVING OR ASSIST IN SETTING UP NECESSARY DETOUR ROUTES

• REMOVE DEBRIS FROM THE ROADWAY

• MONITOR INFRASTRUCTURE FOR SUSPICIOUS DEVICES, PEOPLE OR ACTIVITIES

• CHECK AND TAG ABANDONED VEHICLES

• MONITOR WEATHER CHANGES

SAFE Patrol Equipment

The SAFE Patrol service is provided free of charge by the Transportation Cabinet, Department of Transportation Safety. Each SAFE vehicle is fully equipped to handle minor roadside emergencies and to assist at the scene of a crash. The following are some items carried on each SAFE Patrol vehicle:

Transportation Operations Center

The Transportation Operations Center (TOC) operates 24/7, 365 days a year. Operators enter traffic information to update our 511 web site and our 511 telephone system. This enables travelers to check current highway conditions before they travel or while on the roadway. Updated traffic and weather information is also available to travelers at kiosks located at Welcome Centers through-out Kentucky.

The TOC Specialists, located within the center perform dispatching functions for the SAFE Patrol Operators.
