From the rom the rom the rom the Principal Principal Principal Principal Last week, Ellen Stirling Primary School was visited by no less than three schools to visit a number of classrooms to watch specific lessons using ‘Let’s Decode’, ‘Explicit Direct Instruction’ and ‘Daily Review’. These approaches use high impact, research based teaching approaches and our ESPS staff have taken these approaches and implemented them well in classes across the school this year. Cable Beach Primary – Broome, Tambrey Primary School – Karratha and St Philip’s Christian College – NSW were very impressed with the quality of teaching approaches by our teaching and non-teaching staff. They loved seeing the engagement and accountability of the students through these approaches in a range of year levels. They were also amazed to see high quality ‘Direct Instruction Reading’ lessons being conducted by our Education Assistants to small groups in DIRI. We continue to work hard to improve our approach to teaching in line with our Moral Purpose of providing a safe, enriched learning and teaching environment driven by high expectations for success. Ask your child if they have had visitors from other schools this term? ATTENDANCE At school, many concepts (such as literacy and numeracy) are taught in a sequence. Missing school means missing out on learning – which can often make it difficult to catch up later. This is particularly important in the early years when essential foundation skills are being taught. Going to school every day helps children learn the important life skill of ‘showing up’ – at school, at work, to sport and other commitments. Research from the Western Australian Telethon Kids Institute shows that every day at school counts towards a student’s learning. Students who attend more, generally do better at school and in life. The School Education Act 1999 does not allow principals to give permission for families to take holidays during the school term. As students are required to attend school every day, time off for holidays is recorded as an absence. COMPLAINTS MANAGEMENT This school is always willing to hear and work with parents who may need to complain about an issue that may have occurred during the school day. The first point of contact should be your child’s teacher. If that does not address the problem, the Executive Administrative Team is always available to discuss your concerns. Issues that cannot be resolved locally at the school are usually referred to the Department of Education Regional Office. Please do not be tempted to post your grievances online in social media as this breaches many of our security measures that are in place for the students at this school. Internet trolls and online bullies usually allow and encourage the naming and shaming of schools, as well as staff members, parents and students. Photos are also used online in these arenas which again breaches privacy for a lot of families. There are always two sides to any issue and we at ESPS are here to help come to a suitable resolution. The ESPS Dad of the Month Award

Each month, students at Ellen Stirling Primary School nominate male role models in their lives for the ESPS Dad of the Month award. The winner out of all of the hundreds of entries for the month of July is Roland Coronel. Roland was nominated by Kate who wrote ‘He takes care of us while we are sick. He rewards us whenever we get a certificate. He hugs us and gives us kisses. Nothing is going to replace my Dad! I Love My Dad no matter what happens to him.

Athletics Club will continue this Thursday morning. All students from Year 3 – 6 who are interested in practising and measuring their athletics skills are welcome to attend. We will be focussing on Shot Put, Turbo Javelin and Long Jump. Please be aware that if it is raining or stormy with lightning training will not be on.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Our Faction Athletics Carnival is on Friday, 24 August. It would be great to see a large number of spectators attend. Unfortunately this year, there will be no jumps and throws carnival. Many parents and students have asked how championship points and selection for the interschool team will now be decided. All results from Physical Education lessons, before school training and some lunchtime sessions will count towards individual championship points and contribute to the overall faction points. The interschool team will be chosen from these results.

INTERSCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY

Last Friday, 3 August was the EISA Cross Country Carnival at Swan Valley Anglican School. Our fastest five boys and girls from each year level (Year 3 – 6) represented our school. Well done on all of your hard work and training which paid off with Ellen Stirling coming in fourth place. We
