Elgar Handbooks in BUSINESS & MANAGEMENT

Highlights

www.e-elgar.com • www.elgaronline.com

We are proud that we have the largest Handbook program in management of any publisher in the world, with over 100 books and 2,000 specially commissioned chapters, and 10-15 new books published each year. What makes Elgar’s Handbooks unique is the research focus and, in many cases, the cross disciplinary nature of the topics. We aim to publish Handbooks in established fields and in emerging areas, but whatever area we choose, the aim is to outline current research and set out a new research agenda for the future.

What makes a good Handbook? Original, specially commissioned content; a good mix of senior and emerging scholars; a lively debate between chapters and an aspiration to pave the way for future research. We hope that any PhD student would have a dog-eared copy of one of our Handbooks, but – in many cases – we aim also for them to be useful for masters teaching and established researchers.

This year, we are particularly excited about some key new Handbooks on entrepreneurship and on marketing research including a volume on the connection between entrepreneurship and philanthropy and, later on in the year, the Handbook of Entrepreneurial Cognition edited by J. Robert Mitchell, Ronald K. Mitchell and Brandon Randolph-Seng and Handbook on Research in Relationship Marketing by Robert Morgan, Janet Turner Parish and George Deitz.

We have also signed up an exciting new Handbooks of Research Methods in Management series edited by Mark Saunders at Surrey, UK. The books in this series will make the life of any PhD student in management easier – see page 6. The first volume, Marta Sinclair’s Handbook of Research Methods on Intuition has just been published.

Handbook on the Entrepreneurial UniversityEdited by Alain Fayolle, EMLYON Business School, France and Dana T. Redford, UCP-Porto, PortugalThis insightful Handbook offers a lens through which to view entrepreneurship strategy for higher education institutions, as it becomes increasingly necessary for universities to consider changing their strategies, culture and practices to become more entrepreneurial.

Is the idea of an entrepreneurial university a myth or a reality? Is the university model capable of adapting to new evolving trends and a more complex professional world? And, what is the impact of entrepreneurship in education? Through extensive research and case studies from some of the leading entrepreneurial thinkers around the world, Alain Fayolle and Dana Redford answer these questions and raise further issues for debate.

The International Handbook on Social InnovationCollective Action, Social Learning and Transdisciplinary ResearchEdited by Frank Moulaert, KU Leuven, Belgium, Diana MacCallum, Curtin University, Australia, Abid Mehmood, Cardiff University, UK and Abdelillah Hamdouch, University of Tours, France‘Social innovation may not be a new idea but it is clearly an idea whose time has come, not least because the traditional models of innovation – narrowly framed technical models – have run their course and no longer resonate in a world of societal challenges. This Handbook has two great merits – it brings conceptual rigour to the debate and it provides compelling narratives of social innovation in practice.’ – Kevin Morgan, Cardiff University, UK

Handbook of Research Methods on Social EntrepreneurshipEdited by Richard Seymour, The University of Sydney Business School, Sydney, AustraliaDefining ‘social entrepreneurship’ has in the past proved problematic, and debate continues concerning what it does and does not entail and encompass. This unique book frames the debates surrounding the phenomenon and argues that many of the difficulties relating to the study of social entrepreneurship are rooted in methodological issues. Highlighting these issues, the book sets out ideas and implications for researchers using alternative methodologies.

Handbook on Organisational EntrepreneurshipEdited by Daniel Hjorth, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark‘Daniel Hjorth is justifiably famous for thinking differently about those things “we all know”, and this Handbook adds fuel to that fire. The Handbook reasserts the intellectual and practical primacy of organizational creation as the driving force of entrepreneurship. By getting some of the best minds in entrepreneurship to explore and speculate on the organizational aspects of entrepreneurship, this Handbook reframes and repositions entrepreneurship as the organizing trope for the postindustrial age.’

Handbook of Research Methods on IntuitionEdited by Marta Sinclair, Griffith University, AustraliaHow does one go about studying intuition – a complex, cross-disciplinary field, which is still developing? How can intuition be captured in situ? How can a researcher harness their own intuition? This book uses method-related themes to help answer these questions and explore innovative developments in intuition research.

The authors explore the effects of cognitive systems and capabilities, the role of emotions and stress and highlight challenges of quantitative approaches. They investigate qualitative techniques for mapping intuition, illustrate the use of grounded theory and, finally, review the role of researchers’ own expertise and intuition. Handbook of Longitudinal Research Methods in Organisation and Business StudiesEdited by Melanie E. Hassett and Eriikka Paavilainen-Mäntymäki, University of Turku, Finland‘This is a very timely book that fills an important gap in the field of research methods. So far very little attention has been paid to longitudinal research methods, while the usefulness of this type of research has often been discussed in many papers and conferences. Insights provided by scholars who have been doing this type of research provide useful guidelines for anyone interested in research methods from senior scholars to young researchers and PhD candidates. This volume will serve as an excellent complement to the existing range of books on research methods.’

Booysen, Antioch University, US, Eddy Ng, Dalhousie University, Canada, Ian Roper, Middlesex University Business School, UK and Ahu Tatli, Queen Mary, University of London, UKManaging and developing diversity is on the political and business agenda in many countries; therefore diversity management has become an area of knowledge and practice in its own right. Yet all too often it is referred to as a unifying concept, as if it were to be interpreted uniformly across all cultures and countries. The contributors to this volume expertly examine the relationship between diversity management and equality legislation within the different participating countries’ national contexts.

Handbook of Research on Promoting Women’s CareersEdited by Susan Vinnicombe OBE, Cranfield University, UK and Simmons College, US, Ronald J. Burke, York University, Canada, Stacy Blake-Beard and Lynda L. Moore, Simmons College US ‘As more women take on highly visible leadership roles, such as CEO or C-suite executive, I am often asked whether there continues to be a need for research on women’s career development. This book effectively answers the challenge behind that question by documenting the status of women in business and by marshaling empirical evidence of gender effects on careers. The chapters provide a rich, theoretically grounded overview of women’s career development and action steps for accelerating the growth of women’s representation in leadership.’

– Alison M. Konrad, Western University, Canada

‘Professors Vinnicombe, Burke, Blake-Beard, and Moore have assembled an internationally and intellectually diverse cast of contributors to chronicle and examine the implications of the seismic shift in women’s roles in the global workforce. Collectively, they make a strong case for why advancing women’s careers is a key business as well as societal issue that must be addressed if the full potential of all societal members is to be tapped. This book belongs on the bookshelf of all scholars of gender and career issues as an essential reference.’

Handbook of Research on Employee VoiceEdited by Adrian Wilkinson, Griffith University, Australia, Jimmy Donaghey, University of Warwick, UK, Tony Dundon, NUI Galway, Ireland and Richard B. Freeman, Harvard University and National Bureau of Economic Research, USThe term ‘employee voice’ refers to the ways and means through which employees can attempt to have a say and influence organizational issues that affect their work and the interests of managers and owners. The concept is distinct, but related to and often overlapping with issues such as participation, involvement and, more recently, engagement. This Handbook provides an up-to-date survey of the current research into employee voice, sets this research into context and sets a marker for future research in the area.

Handbook of Research on Knowledge ManagementAdaptation and ContextEdited by Anders Örtenblad, University of Nordland, NorwayThis innovative Handbook aims to examine whether there is a need to adapt and widen our understanding of knowledge management. A common definition of knowledge management is taken as the starting point for discussions on its relevance in various contexts, such as Buddhist organizations, law firms, the army and indigenous organizations. Moreover, the universality of Ikujiro Nonaka’s ideas on knowledge management is explored, and some alternative definitions are suggested. This book will appeal to academics and students of business and management, business administration, sociology and organizational behavior. Practitioners, managers and business-owners will also find this an invaluable resource.

Handbook of Advances in Trust ResearchEdited by Reinhard Bachmann, University of Surrey, UK and Akbar Zaheer, University of Minnesota, US Acclaim for first edition:

‘Given the number of special issues and other empirical articles devoted to trust, a handbook to record the state of trust research (both conceptual and empirical) seems timely. . . this Handbook provides a collection of essays about different aspects, components, and qualities of trust, as well as differing perspectives on trust. . . The editors and authors seem to have delivered on their stated purposes, and the reader can approach the Handbook as a whole, or as separate parts that focus on a particular level of inquiry. . . The book is a primary resource for those who conduct trust research.’

– Joann Keyton, Academy of Management Review

The Handbook represents new and important developments in trust research. The contributors are all prominent and highly respected experts in the field. They provide a contemporary overview of the most crucial issues in current trust research including contracts, innovation and negotiation, trust and control, and highlight themes which have gained in prominence since the original Handbook such as trust and the financial crisis, public trust in business, and trust and HRM. The book also explores recent theoretical advances and points the way for future research.

Handbook of Research on the Learning OrganizationAdaptation and ContextEdited by Anders Örtenblad, University of Nordland, NorwayThis timely Handbook establishes the ‘contextualization’ of the learning organization idea as a research field.

In contrast to much of the previous literature, which has approached the learning organization as a panacea that every organization could and should adopt, this major Handbook puts the learning organization into context. It examines the relevance of the learning organization idea to organizations in various specific contexts, employing examples from a wide variety of cultures including China and Islamic nations, and from industries as diverse as the police force, care services for the elderly and family firms.

Handbook of Research on CreativityEdited by Kerry Thomas, University of New South Wales, College of Fine Arts and Janet Chan, University of New South Wales, Australia‘This penetrating volume both summarizes compellingly what we know about creativity and examines critically loose concepts of creativity, cases where creativity does harm, and deceptive hype about creativity. This volume neither romanticizes creativity nor reduces it to the servant of economic and cultural development, offering instead a differentiated and penetrating examination of the nature of creativity and its diverse positive and sometimes negative roles.’

Handbook of Intuition ResearchEdited by Marta Sinclair, Griffith University, AustraliaThis groundbreaking interdisciplinary Handbook showcases the latest intuition research, providing an integrated framework that reconciles opposing views on what intuition is and how it works. The internationally renowned group of contributors explores different facets of the intuiting process and its outcome, the role of consciousness and affect in intuition, and alternate ways of capturing it. They tackle the function of intuition in expertise, strategy, entrepreneurship, and ethics and outline intuitive decision-making in the legal profession, medicine, film and wine industry, and teaching. The Handbook pushes the boundaries of our current understanding by exploring the possibility of non-local intuition based on the principles of quantum holography and investigating new techniques for developing intuitive skills.

Handbook of Research on Crisis Leadership in OrganizationsEdited by Andrew J. DuBrin, Rochester Institute of Technology, US‘Modern organizational life seems dominated by crisis – BP and the Gulf Oil spill, TEPCO and the Japanese tsunami, the global financial meltdown. Therefore it is particularly timely to find a collection of articles in this Handbook that provides research guidance and practical insights on how leaders manage or mismanage in crisis situations. The focus on the crisis leader highlights what they do, and how they do it, while at the same time raising important questions to guide subsequent analysis.’

– Sydney Finkelstein, Dartmouth College, US and author of Why Smart Executives Fail

With contributions from many of the leading researchers in the field, the Handbook of Research on Crisis Leadership in Organizations summarizes much of the theory, research, and opinion about various facets of crisis leadership in order to advance this emerging field. It recognizes that crises have become an almost inevitable part of organizational life, and describes how leaders can facilitate people getting through the crisis.

Handbook on the Economics and Theory of the FirmEdited by Michael Dietrich, formerly of the University of Sheffield, UK and Jackie Krafft, University of Nice–Sophia Antipolis and CNRS-GREDEG, France This unique Handbook explores both the economics of the firm and the theory of the firm, two areas which are traditionally treated separately in the literature. On the one hand, the former refers to the structure, organization and boundaries of the firm, while the latter is devoted to the analysis of behaviours and strategies in particular market contexts. The novel concept underpinning this authoritative volume is that these two areas closely interact, and that a framework must be articulated in order to illustrate how linkages can be created. Handbook of Research on Mergers and AcquisitionsEdited by Yaakov Weber, College of Management, IsraelFor the last four decades, researchers in various disciplines have been trying to explain the enduring paradox of the growing activity and volume of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) versus the high failure rate of M&A. This book will stimulate scholars to focus on new research directions. It explores how underlying concepts and methodologies can make an important contribution towards understanding M&A and its performance. It provides research that incorporates multidisciplinary, multi-level, multi-stage and cross-cultural models and analyses, and also focuses on such issues as process-content, knowledge transfer, due diligence, performance measures, communication, trust, grief, integration approaches, individual values, change management, and consulting.
