Master of Arts in Teaching
Elementary Education (preK-6)
or Elementary/Middle Education (preK-6 and 6-8)
Undergraduate Content Competencies
What are some guidelines I need to be aware of?
Elementary Education
5. One course may be used for more than one competency, however the credit hours may only be counted once towards the
overall total. No duplicate content may be used to fulfill content competencies.
6. Any Incomplete Competencies displayed in this evaluation must be completed prior to student teaching.
1. All Candidates must meet the minimum Elementary Education requirements listed above AND document a minimum of 21
semester hours in one or more of the content areas. If the 21 hours required have been met, the specific Middle School area
"met box" will be checked at the bottom of the form below.
PLEASE NOTE: The hours used to complete the basic Elementary Education requirements may be used towards the 21 hours
needed for Middle School Endorsement. *Please see the bottom of the form below to see exactly where you stand for Middle
School Endorsement. Duplicate content may not be used to fulfill Content Competencies. Example: If you have taken "ENGL
101" (or equiv) twice, it may only be counted once on your evaluation. Example: If you have taken "History of US 1" (or equiv),
you may not use the "History of US 1" CLEP exam to fulfill additional hours for the Middle School Endorsement.
2. If you are seeking Middle School Endorsement in any area, please respond to this email to let us know which Endorsement
you are pursuing. Please note: Elementary Ed students are automatically evaluated for Middle School Endorsement, each time
an evaluation is conducted. After 9-4-2013: For add-on Middle School Science - Earth/Space Science is required as well as (2)
Labs. For add-on Middle School Math - Both Geometry and Probablity & Statistics are required.
7. Passing Praxis II scores must be submitted with the Gate 3 packet prior to student teaching.

ADD-ON / Middle School Endorsement (grades 6-8)
This form is to notify MAT candidates of the content competency areas that are required for the
Virginia Teaching Licensure and assist you in completing these requirements.
1. Candidates for initial teaching licensure must complete all liberal arts content courses distributed in the six core areas
(English, Mathematics, Science, History, Social Science, Arts/Humanities). EVERY competency in the 6 core areas must be
completed. All courses must have a prefix that matches the discipline of the competency.
2. Once all of the content areas have been completed, the total number of semester credit hours must be a minimum of 49
hours.
3. Courses from a Bachelor's and/or Post-baccalaureate degree, including CLEP/DANTES/EXCELSIOR exams, can satisfy the
competencies. Please see Elementary Education Equivalency Guide that was sent along with your evaluation for suggested
courses and exams that will fulfill your remaining competencies.
4. Courses covering the "teaching of a subject" cannot be used for content competencies.
3. If you are seeking Middle School Endorsement in any area, please note the additional Praxis II requirements at:
http://www.liberty.edu/academics/education/graduate/index.cfm?PID=14628 .
4. If you are seeking Middle School Endorsement in any area, additional Graduate level coursework may also be required, so
please be sure to contact Advising to let them know that you are seeking Middle School Endorsement.
