A transcript of my interaction or posting
Since I joined this list on Saturday Jun 13 20:08:48, 2009, I posted five topics to be
discussed in this list, and within the past month and half I received lots of responds to
Electronic Communication Assignment 4
these topics which I shared with the subscribed group of that list. I received more than 20
messages sent directly to my E-mail address, or sent first to PUBYAC e-mail address on
behalf of me.
The topics I discussed with them included:,
[PY] new member was my first topic I sent it when I first subscribed, I introduced
myself and wished that they’ll help me with ideas in summer reading program, I got
some advices about how to write to a professional group, and I read all the other
contributions in that topic, Then I posted them my second topic which was
[PY] 150 ideas for SRP , I sent them a link to the website has the same idea, then I sent
my third post in the same topic [PY] summer reading program that was in the month of
June, Then in July I sent them asking for help about[PY] weeding , I wanted to know
how they are weeding their library collections, I received ten messages from librarian all
over the states, these messages includes their own experience in doing the weeding, or
links to popular weeding methods.
The last topic I posted in July was [PY] read to a dog In that topic I posted the idea of
using a dog in reading program, that program was used by Trumbull library to help
children who have problems with reading to share in this program, I was really impressed
when I received another ten messages came directly to my e-mail box, and some of them
posted directly to the PUBYAC site, I have no idea that all these library in US using that
kind of program, the librarians explained how they enjoyed that program in their
libraries, others advised all who use this program to be careful using only the certified
dogs for that program, and giving advices to the kids who participate in this kind of
program, it was so helpful to join that group list
What did I learn from participating in the list?
I am not working in public library, I just volunteered for a while in one small public
library with the children librarian. Since I joined this group list, I learned how to be
professional? Because when you are dealing with professionals, you know how to start
talking or discussing any topic, you should be clear when you ask or answer a question,
you had to follow the rules, it’s not a personal communication, it’s professional, I learned
how others are dealing with their problems, and I learned trying to help others, it’s so

important when you are working with others in the same career, without meeting each
others in person, we could share our ideas and the expert one gives advices to the others
who have no experiences. I was so happy to receive all their contribution, and advices, I
appreciated their ideas, even those who didn’t accept my mistakes in spelling; I learned
from them not to be in a hurry when I post them needing their help. I checked the links
they provided me with, it was so helpful. I’ve their message in my e-mail box , I think I’ll
keep it for further help, it was a very interesting experience.
Here is one massage sent to me in the topic of “ READ TO A DOG”
For anyone conducting reading programs with dogs please take these words of advice from
someone who has run a similar literacy program for children for 12+ years.
Never, ever use a dog that is not a registered, certified therapy dog. I understand many of us may
have dogs that are truly wonderful or know others that stress their dogs love for children and
non aggressive behavior. The bottom line is dogs are animals and for reasons sometimes we do
not understand can react in unpredictable and startling ways. A child can accidently step on a
tail or touch an area on the animal that is sensitive that may cause a reaction. Even trained easy
going dogs with great temperaments are capable of suddenly snapping or lunging. Believe me I
have witnessed this first hand. Dogs coming into our libraries and schools that are certified
therapy dogs not only give us a guarantee that the animal has been properly trained but the dog
is also covered by a 5 million dollar liability policy which protects your public and your library.
Considering the current economy and the tight budgets we all are experiencing I doubt any of us
can afford a long and costly court battle.
Since first beginning this program I have learned many, many lessons. Safety should always be
paramount. Not only should everyone make sure you are using certified therapy dogs but also
make sure to confirm each year with your national organization to confirm the dog and owner
are current. A current membership is critical since a lapsed membership means no insurance. If
I can be of any assist on these important issues please feel free to contact me or you can look for
more information about Henderson Libraries animal assisted literacy program for kids at PLA

in March 2010. We all have so many children, teens that could use help. Animals can be a
wonderful tool but please be sure to do it in a safe way.
