Thierry Auffray has been conducting his own fund-raising activities to benefit The Grill atChickasaw Point. First he published and sold calendars containing photos of the golfcourse, which he took himself. Then he filled a basket with a variety of donated adult bever-ages and drew the winning name at the Super Bowl Party. The lucky winners were Tomand Lee Ann Pressley.

Ralph Manee and Skip Holden were spot-ted hard at work repairing the cart pathon Hole #4. Ralph is heading-up the ef-fort, with help from Skip and other volun-teers, to smooth and patch the cart pathswhere nature has taken its toll.

Communication and Public RelationsBy Gene Blair, Director

It has been fairly quiet over the past three months in theCommunications arena. However, there are a few thingsto report that are both exciting and timely.

First, we are in the process of updating our website, video and brochure. Although the original version of

each was excellent for five years ago, each needed updating to be relevant to to-day's sophisticated visitor. I have reviewed preliminary samples, and they arespectacular in representing our community. I will be presenting them at our nextPOA meeting. I must also mention that we are fortunate to be working with acompany that has a personal interest in Chickasaw Point. As a result, they are do-ing the work for almost 70% off the commercial rate.

We continue to participate in focused sponsorship opportunities. The annual"State of Oconee" luncheon is one major event we helped sponsor. For a minimalexpenditure, we achieved a presence in front of nearly three hundred of the mostinfluential people in Oconee County. Our name is out there as being overt sup-porters of the county in which we live.

Another example is the recent"Oconee Living" Spring Expo. At thisevent, we had a booth for the ChickasawGolf Course and POA. Lynn Holley, Patand Bonnie Craft, Mollie Woodson,Greg Ray and Luke Watkins representedus well. Luke did a golf clinic and theothers were actively promoting the com-munity and golf course.

The last thing is that there has been aconscious effort to blend more of themarketing activities of the POA and the golf course. This will result in strongermarketing campaigns that will benefit both at the same time. Bottom line, we willbe able to do more with the same amount of money.

Thank you for your continued support in dollars and encouragement in keepingChickasaw "on the map". As always, I encourage you to bring ideas and sugges-tions in how best to market our community!

Spring is here, at last, and we are all thinking about howto spruce-up the exterior of our homes. Many of us clean up the yard, power washthe driveway, decks, or perhaps the whole house. We wash windows and clear theleaves off the roof. More ambitious projects might be spreading mulch, trimmingbushes or trimming the low hanging branches on our trees. The one thing these allhave in common is that it can make a dramatic change to your home, but you donot have to notify the ACC to do it. As they say “just do it”.

Thinking about changing the color of your roof or your home? How about a newdeck, porch, awnings or, perhaps even, an addition? A new driveway may be agood idea to replace that high maintenance gravel one, or you need to remove atree that may be causing a problem. These are the types of changes you do need tocontact the ACC for approval. It is very simple, see Lisa at the POA office or goonline to the Chickasaw Point website and get an APPLICATION FOR MISCEL-LANEOUS EXTERIOR CHANGES OR ADDITIONS. Complete the form andreturn it to Lisa. Someone from the ACC Committee will contact you regardingyour request.

As the temperatures climb, or so we hope, the amenities in Chickasaw Point seemore use by our POA members and their guests. We have already seen heavieruse of some and improvements of others.

The tennis courts were resurfaced last year which included the addition ofstriping for Pickleball. These improvements have made the courts more usable forall ages and skill levels. It is absolutely awesome seeing residents and their guestsout on the courts more than ever…and talk about a multi-generational amenity! What a blast! The tennis gang has also repaired the windscreens, but we imaginenew ones will be coming next year.

The clubhouse roof has been repaired from confirmed hail damage, whichmeans our insurance is covering all but the deductible. Then the work on the flatsection of roof began, also called “the catwalk”. This will involve removing themultiple layers of old roofing and patches, replacing damaged plywood, and re-surfacing with a membrane designed specifically for flat roofs, such as those onWal-mart stores. The Board feels very confident in this material and this process.

The pool is being cranked back up in anticipation of a May 11 opening. Newrequired depth markers and “no diving” signs must be installed on the sides of thepool, at the water’s edge.

The campground will undergo a clean-up, as well.Last, but not least, Papoose Park, the community playground, is undergoing a

clean-up and mulch will be added. Also, a basketball goal and covered swingchains will be installed, and repairs to the teeter-totter will take place.

AmenitiesBy Lynn Callahan, Amenities Director

The reasons this is such an important part of your project is that, when ap-proved, it is your assurance that what you want to do is in conformance with ourcommunity covenants and building requirements, and more importantly that youknow your project will blend in well with the community and not only improvethe appearance of your home, but the community as well. Having an approved re-quest also ensures your contractors or material delivery trucks will not be detainedor turned away at the gate, because there is no knowledge of your project. Duringor after construction, if the ACC, or perhaps a resident, notices that your project isnot in conformance with community standards you may be required to makechanges to meet these standards. When in doubt about if you need to complete arequest form, call Lisa at the POA office or any ACC committee person.

Financial Reportby Doug Young, POA, CUCO and CPGA Treasurer

Below are the summarized financial results for the Chickasaw Point POA,Chickasaw Utility Company, and Chickasaw Point Golf Association. For all threeof our financial entities, the net income was better than budget. For the POA as-sessment collections were budgeted to begin in April, but several residents paid inMarch. The special projects expense included clubhouse roof repairs and repairinglavatory flooding problems in the clubhouse. CUCo is essentially on budget forboth income and expenses. For the CPGA, we normally do not report financialresults. That information is available at the office for POA members. CPGA reve-nue was slightly under budget, mostly because of the weather, while expenses andassessment collections were better than budget. The expense savings were in golfcourse expenses and inside operations. Of the golf course expense variance,$4,849.00 was a budget timing issue involving chemical purchases. None of the2013 financial results have been audited. The complete financial statements areavailable at the office for property owners to review.

Congratulations Chickasaw Point! Would you believe this is the 5th anniversaryof Chickasaw Point earning the prestigious honor of being a Firewise Commu-nity? It was not an easy thing to attain this status and we are required to continueto be proactive during the year to maintain this status. Our community efforts toclean up our properties, and the POA efforts to chip up your brush piles, ensuresour position as a Firewise Community. We all know there is more we can do toprotect our home from a wildfire, however.

The evening news can be a scary thing when you see the wildfires in the west, the North and South Carolina mountains and even Myrtle Beach burning thou-sands of acres of land, homes and other buildings in its path. It could have been acase of arson, a careless camper or even a lightning strike that caused these fires, but the outcome is always the same: little or nothing is left.

Chickasaw Point is not immune to this type of disaster. Our homes are close to-gether and there is still a lot of fuel on the ground in our vacant lots. Even withthe recent rain, we are still at a high risk for a potential wildfire. The best thingyou can do is to protect your home from the possible effects of a fire. Start byeliminating possible fuel sources around your home. Trim bushes and low hang-ing tree limbs, remove leaves and combustible debris near the house. Simplystated, create a non-combustible barrier around your home that will make a wild-fire go around your home rather than through it. Are you remodeling or building a

Page 9: Electronic Chickasaw Point of View April 2013 Chickasaw ... · Thinking about changing the color of your roof or your home? How about a new deck, porch, awnings or, perhaps even,

9

new home or addition? Firewise has many construction rec-ommendations that will improve your ability to survive awildfire. The Chickasaw Point ACC building requirementsdocument has been updated with suggested Firewise recom-mendations for the various components of building a newhome or an addition to an existing home.

Your Firewise Committee has information that can help youbuild this barrier or you can go to the Firewise website and getmany ideas to help. You may not be able to prevent a wildfire, but you can do things to lessen your potential damage shouldthe fire come your way.

ROADSBy Sandra Jones, Roads Director

I know that Mother Nature keeps teasing us withthe weather, but I think it is safe to say that springreally is upon us. That also means it is time to startthe roads project. Over the next few weeks, we willbe finalizing our list of road repairs and obtaining

bids. We will provide an e-blast announcement when the work is scheduled to be-gin. As always, it will be important to drive cautiously and be aware of the work-ers and vehicles around the community.

Have a fun and safe spring and summer!

2013 Eagle WatchBy Bob Holmes

A wise man once told me thatif you live long enough, you willexperience many unusual things.Mark one unusual up for thetwentieth Eagle Watch. Remem-bering some previous outingswith temperatures in the 30’s,twenty-mile-an-hour winds andsome showers that dropped thechill factor to unpleasant, the

Men’s Club EAGLE WATCH spotters enjoyed temperatures in the 70’s and sun-shine with a slight breeze. It was a beautiful spring like day, the first week inJanuary, that brought a couple of our healthy spotters out in shorts.

Captains Cole Yache, Lynn Hol-ley and Bill Callahan hosted ninecrew members sporting binocularsand cameras, in addition to amplesnacks and various containers ofliquid nourishment. Cole, RobertKroll and Jon Geist patrolled theroute up the Tugaloo arm of Hart-well to buoy 100, just before thechannel begins to narrow. Whenthe lake is thirteen feet below fullpool, it seems as if tree trunks, once hidden beneath the water, now sprout in the coves. Bill Callahan captainedBill Huff, Bob Holmes and Ed Seyller for the southern route past Tugaloo StatePark down to the I-85 bridge. Tactics of the past were changed for the third boatand Lynn Holley’s crew concentrated on an area between Port Bass and theChoestoa where eagle sightings have been reported and photographed in the past.

Well!!!! What did we see? An Eagle? Well, yes and maybe. The third boat spot-ted a very large bird that took wing away from them and flew behind an islandnear buoy 68. Unfortunately a positive identification of an eagle could not be con-firmed. Crews did report seeing a number of lake birds including loons, red shoul-dered hawks, Canada geese and the ever present turkey and black vultures.

At the end of the beautiful morning, the crews returned to the Marina to prepare

12

for the always fun and fillingchili dinner, with many sidedishes, all prepared by our sup-porting spouses. We acknowl-edge and thank our better halvesfor all the tasty foods and forsupporting the 2013 Eagle Watch.A confirmed Eagle spottingwould have been nice, but a dayon the lake and a meal accompa-nied by stories, with friends, makes a darned good Chickasaw day.

Chickasaw Point Men’s Golf LeagueBy Pat Craft, Vice-President

The Men’s Golf League regu-lar season began on Wednesday,April 3, with breakfast at TheGrill followed by the first roundof golf for the season.

This year, the plan is to occa-sionally change up the game abit to add some variety to theweekly play. It should prove tobe both entertaining and chal-lenging for all league golfers, while still providing pointsaccumulation for the season-

end awards. The closest to the pin contests will continue as well, with maybe achange or two to that venue as we go along.

We will continue under the same “rules” that were used last season –such asplay it forward using the Gold tees (or from any tee that you elect personally withthe appropriate handicap adjustment) and ground under repair with a no-penaltydrop for the “grass-disadvantaged” areas of the fairways. We will end playing bywinter rules for the season – that will hopefully make for a more enjoyable experi-ence.

We want everyone to continue to enjoy the competition, and we look forward to

On opening day, beautiful weather and a fun-filledround of golf, awaited the men of the golf league. Firstthe men enjoyed a full breakfast at The Grill.

Every three years, a Special Committee is appointed to update the Constitution,By-Laws and Standing Rules to reflect the changing requirements to promote theaims of the organization. At the March meeting, the committee presented the re-vised document for approval by the membership. After a brief discussion, themembership voted to accept the new guidelines. A great deal of time and effortwas required of the committee to facilitate the revision of the entire document. AHUGE THANK YOU goes to the committee members: Maria Adams, RosemaryBein, Sue Large, Jan McFall and Shari Waldo. Thanks also goes to De French andthe Women’s Club Board for their input and support of the Constitution and By-Laws Committee. St. Patrick’s Day 2013 Golf TournamentBy Skip Holden

What a great day! 60 golfers! The St. Patrick’s Day Tournament was held onFriday, March 15. Players, wearing green, arrived well before the 12:00 p.m. startand were greeted by the Tournament Committee.

The tournament consisted of a four-person best ball format. The ladies hit fromthe forward tees, and the gentlemen from the gold tees. The main idea was to usethe team’s shamrock golf balls during the entire round. The Chickasaw Point GolfCourse supplied each player with a shamrock golf ball and allowed each foursometo purchase 2 additional shamrock balls, in case one of the original shamrock ballswas lost. The goal was to return with your score card and at least 4 shamrockballs, without any penalty. It was fun sitting at the scoring table and watching thecaptains slowly approach and turn in only 2 to 3 shamrock balls. Now that thetournament is over, if you happen to find one or two of the shamrock balls, keepthem as souvenirs. GOOD HUNTING!

PickleballBy Lynn Holley

Since the refinishing of our tennis courts and the addition oflines for Pickleball, more than 65 people have tried this newamenity. It is a fun game for all ages and has attracted manywho have never played tennis for one reason or another. The game originated in Oregon in the mid-sixties and was

named after a dog, Pickles. (Check the internet.)Most games are played with two players on each side of the

net (doubles), but can be played as a singles game (one playeron each side of the net).

The game is played on the tennis court using the tennis net.The smaller Pickleball court is actually the size that is used forbadminton. The tennis lines are white and the Pickleball linesare light blue.

Instead of a racket, a solid paddle about a third larger than aping pong paddle is used, and a whiffle ball about the size of asoftball replaces

the tennis ball.Games are usually played to

eleven or until one of the teams(doubles) wins by two points. When there are a number of play-ers waiting to play, most gamesare played to seven points.

Only the serving team can scorepoints. When the serving team faults twice, the opposing team gets the opportu-nity to serve.

You will find players on the courts most Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays

Even Jace Jarvishas discovered thefun of playingPickleball.

Graham Matalik Realizes His Goal

Since the age of five or six, Graham Matalik has dreamed of play-ing soccer at the collegiate level. The dream began when he startedplaying soccer, competitively, at an early age and attended the Clem-son University soccer games. As a freshman, Graham joined thestarting line-up as goalkeeper for the Walhalla High School Razor-backs Soccer Team and is known as a leader on and off the field.

To achieve his goal, Graham took the matter into his own hands byemailing several schools in hopes of catching the attention of someone at the col-lege level. That effort paid off when Winthrop coach, Rich Posipanko, came call-ing. The Winthrop Eagles are in serious need of a goalkeeper, because four oftheir goalkeepers are graduating this year. Now as a high school senior, Graham hassigned a National Letter of Intent to play soc-cer at Winthrop University. As he signed hisletter of intent, he was surrounded by his par-ents, Doug and Judi Matalik; his brother,Reese; Walhalla assistant coach, Josh Steeleand Walhalla Head Coach, Mike Estes. TheMatalik family are Chickasaw Point residentsand live at 300 Laurel Drive.

Graham is anxious to move on to the nextlevel and help the Eagles to a winning season. We wish Graham and the Winthrop EaglesSoccer Team a successful season!

Volunteerism is an Integral Part of Chickasaw Point

Question - Is volunteerism for you? Robert andDe French answered, “Yes!” In 2005, they beganvolunteering at Oconee Presbyterian Service Fund, amission that provides emergency funds to the needyfor electric bills, rent, food, education, etc.

In September, 2010, a new soup kitchen was begunin Westminster to honor Dot Abbott, a caring womanknown for helping anyone in need. Robert and Designed up to help this much needed mission, too. Theyvolunteer once a month at Dot’s Kitchen, in the

Westminster American Legion Post 107, helping to prepare meals for approxi-mately 75 people. On the first Wednesday of the month, you may find De peelingturnips, picking chicken, slicing and buttering bread, or brewing the 5 gallons ofsweet tea served each day, Monday through Friday. You will always find Robert atthe sinks washing the many commercial pots and pans needed daily to feed somany people.

The motto of Dot’s Kitchen is simple, “…serve until they all are fed.” Manyresidents of Chickasaw Point already volunteer at the soup kitchen, but they are inconstant need of additional help. If you would like to help, even as a substituteworker, please call De (972-7470) or Joey Roeder (647-5509).

Volunteerism involves labor, but it is truly a labor of love!

Marianne Ippolito and the Anelo Grill

Marianne Ippolito of 617 Chickasaw Drive, is pleased to an-nounce that the Grand Opening of our neighborhood’s newesteatery, Anelo Grill, is scheduled for May 5, 2013.

Located on Hwy 11 just south of Chickasaw Point, AneloGrill will feature specialty burgers and sandwiches, all craftedfrom local ingredients from local farms. Marianne has a strongcommitment to Chickasaw and surrounding Oconee County, and has based her entire business plan on supporting local ven-dors and farmers.

Marianne has been a part-time resident of Chickasaw Point for more than 7years. In January she became a full-time resident by relocating here from Atlanta.

Marianne has enjoyed a successful career in the food and beverage industry formore than 30 years. For the past 10 years, she has served as the General Managerof Food & Beverage for AmericasMart in downtown Atlanta.

What is “Anelo”? Anelo is a hybrid of Marianne’s parents’ first names, and isused as a tribute to them in many facets of her life.In fact, you may have spotted the “Anelo”, a whiteand red Chapparal ski boat parked at the marina.

When Marianne decided to open her Grill, it wasonly natural that she name it after her parents, themselves longtime restauranteurs. It also speaksto her goal of serving local products: Anelo….. AndNow…Eat LOcal.

For more information on Anelo Grill, visit www.anelogrill.com…. Or better yet, come on by on May 5th for the best burger you have had in a looooong time.

They bought their own homeon 112 Wintergreen Court, around the cornerfrom Rick and Ann, five years ago. Now,since last November, they have made arrange-ments to work from home offices, so they canbe here full-time. Tracy is an IT Project Man-

ager and John is a sales manager for Hewlett Packard. They still have close ties to the Atlanta area. Tracy was raised in Atlanta, and

they moved here from Alpharetta. Their son, Burke, is in college there and daugh-ter, Claire, in college in Athens, Georgia. (John is from the Detroit area.) This hasbeen a convenient destination for the family to get together and to enjoy the lakeand golf course. Now, it has become a permanent home in a lovely wooded lake-side setting.

This community affords them time to indulge in their hobbies as well. A busyand energetic couple, they are both golfers and enjoy boating. Tracy also likes or-ganic gardening and biking; John likes racquetball. They are members of EternalShepherd Lutheran Church in Seneca.

Marilyn and Charles Ericson

Chickasaw Point has new full-time neighbors inCharlie and Marilyn Ericson. They have had ahome here at 204 Cheyenne, but just recently soldtheir permanent residence in Ocala and are nowworking at blending two households. When theyfirst found Chickasaw Point, they bought a logcabin on the water for a retreat for their family offour boys.

They reminisced about their sixty-two years ofmarriage, as that time included many adventures--

another summer place on New Jersey shore when the boys were young, a dozencruises, travel abroad, building several new homes, moving from Staten Island toSouth Florida, Charles working long hours, Marilyn managing the boys, campingtrips, boating and now welcoming their 5th great-grandson--a full interesting life,as Charles commented. When they lived on Staten Island, Charles worked eighteen years for the police

department piloting a police boat. In 1968, they moved to warmer weather in Hol-lywood, Florida. Charles, with a teaching degree, worked for the school districtfirst as a substitute teacher, and then, as an investigator for that district for twentyyears - Charles had twenty-two schools to follow-up on.

Two of their sons, Neil and Gary, have homes here also. Gary and Loretta'shome is on North Arrowhead; Neil and Michelle's home is on Camellia. Countingall the children, grandchildren and great-granchildren, there have been only twogirls born into the family! In June, all these Ericsons and extended family will betogether in North Carolina for a reunion planned by the "boys." What wonderfulmodeling Marilyn and Charles have done over the years in providing such well-rounded life experiences of caring, hard work and relaxation. As they nodded in agreement, "the longer we stay in Chickasaw, the more we likeit."
