Industry Terms and Glossary ANSI (American National Standards Institute)
Non-profit organization that generates voluntary product performance standards for many U.S. industries. Standard C82.1 applies
to Electromagnetic Ballasts. Standard C82.11 applies to Electronic Ballasts.
Ballast Efficacy Factor (BEF)
Measure used to compare various ballasts based upon light output and input power. BEF = Ballast Factor x 100 / Input Watt.
Ballast Factor (BF)
Measure of light output from a lamp operated by a commercial ballast, as compared to laboratory standard reference ballast
specified by ANSI. Ballast factor 0.90 means the ballast produces 90% of the light produced by an ANSI C82.2 reference ballast
operating the same lamps.
Crest Factor (Lamp Current Crest Factor)
Ratio of peak lamp current to RMS (average) lamp current.
Input Power / Input Watts
Total power input to the ballast that the ballast and lamp uses as a system and includes lamp watts and ballast losses.
Input Voltage
Voltage provided to a ballast by a power line or power supply.
Instant Start (IS)
Instant start ballasts apply high voltage across the lamp without preheating of the cathode. This is the most energy efficient starting
method for fluorescent lamp ballasting. IS ballasts use 1.5 to 2 watts less per lamp than rapid start ballasts. Other IS benefits
typically include parallel lamp circuitry, longer remote wiring distances, easier installation due to less complicated wiring.
Parallel vs. Series
Ballasts with parallel lamp circuitry have the benefit of companion lamps remaining lit, even if one of the other lamps operated by
the ballast should fail. Systems with series lamp wiring result in all lamps operated on the ballast going out if one should fail.
Power Factor (PF)
A measurement of how efficiently an electrical device uses power supplied by the power line. PF = Watts / (Volts x Amps).
Programmed Start (PS)
Electronic ballast that provides precise heating of the lamp filaments and tightly controls the preheat duration before applying
starting voltage to ignite the lamp.
Rapid Start: (RS)
Electromagnetic or electronic ballast that provides both filament heating and starting voltage to the lamp at the same time in order
to ignite the lamp.
Total Harmonic Distortion: (THD)
A measure of the distortion of an electrical wave form. Excessive THD (defined by ANSI as greater than 32%) may cause adverse
effects to the electrical system.
