The Rail Signalling (RS3) integrated insulationmonitoring and earth fault location equipmentprovides proven protection for railway electricalsystems and equipment up to AC650V.Developed for relay rooms and line-side locations, theRS3 system builds on the impressive track record ofequipment approved by Network Rail for use acrossthe UK. It is the first system to incorporate as standard GSM-enabled data loggers equipped for real time directcommunication with the Intelligent Infrastructure. Italso delivers enhanced reliability and simplifiedinstallation and commissioning.The RS3 system’s ability to immediately identify thelocation of the fault means maintenance teams canrespond more rapidly, enhancing safety and reducingdowntime costs.Faults in the power system arise from a variety ofcauses such as damaged cables, faulty connections,breaks in insulation, and rodent damage. Where thesefaults lead to earth leakage from the power supplythey are immediately detected by the equipment. The RS3 system continually monitors insulation valuesto show real time status of the power system. When theinsulation value (IR) drops the system records the faultand puts a test current signal or pulse into the system.This is pulled to earth at the point where a fault exists.Bender’s portable earth fault location system can be usedto precisely locate feeder earth faults line side, allowingthe repair process to be carried out more quickly,RS3 units are supplied in a self-contained cabinet,tested and ready for easy ‘plug and play’ installationand commissioning alongside existing powerinfrastructure systems up to AC650V. The RS3 can alsobe supplied on a chassis plate for third partyswitchboard installation.

Rail operators frequently experience faults inthe electrical power system that are caused byfaulty connections, rodent damage, breaks ininsulation, fire and cable theft. These faults maycause earth leakage from the power supplywhich if left undetected or addressed may leadto signal failure considerably compromising theuptime availability of the rail network.Ultimately this results in lengthy train delays,wasted engineer time and significant financialpenalties for the operators.

In close consultation with Network Rail Benderhas developed an approved range of electricalsafety equipment which detects problems earlyand immediately informs rail personnel ofdefects.

RS/PELI portable insulation monitorThe RS-PELI portable insulation monitoring unitis designed to be used trackside to measure andanalyse specific sections of the power networkto prioritise installation programmes. The RS/PELI is self-powered through connectionto the trackside signal electrical network anddelivers live monitoring of the system status toimmediately indicate if there is an earth faultand the status of the insulation. The RS/PELI portable unit can also be used toprovide independent verification of the installedRS system performance.

The unit providesengineering teams with vital insulation resistancedata that enables planned maintenance at an earlystage of system deterioration, avoiding unplannedshutdowns and optimising track availability.It is primarily installed on lower voltage isolatedpower supplies -typically AC 230v- using singlefeeder cables but is also suitable for AC/DC12/24/50 and 120V. The device offers continuousinsulation monitoring of the power system to earthwith an adjustable alarm. Each unit incorporates asstandard a GSM-enabled data logger equipped forreal time direct communication with the IntelligentInfrastructure. The unit is supplied fully factory tested in a wall-mounted panel with a lockable windowed door.

Portable Earth Fault Location System EDS3065The EDS3065 portable earth fault location system can be usedto precisely locate feeder earth faults line side, allowing therepair process to be carried out more quickly, minimisingdisruption to rail traffic and reducing system downtime.The handheld unit is designed to pinpoint a network earthfault to a specific cable or transformer by detecting the testsignal from the RS3 system, and does not require the cable ortransformer to be disconnected.
