ELECTRIC LOCO SHED, ANGUL
Introduction.
ELS/Angul is the only Electric Loco shed of KUR division of East coast Railway which is a conversion
from Diesel Loco Shed on 08.12.2005. ELS/ANGL
AC Electric locomotives. These locomotives are dedicated to freight traffic and equipped
equipments like SIV, MPCS, DPWCS, ESMON & VCD

has a present loco holding of 141 numbers of WAG-7
AC Electric locomotives. These locomotives are dedicated to freight traffic and equipped with high end

Location-
Electric Loco Shed, Angul is situated in the midst of Bhubaneswar –Sambalpur Railway route near to
Talcher ( about 158 KM from Bhubaneswar and 116 KM away from Cuttack) in Khurda Road Division of
East Coast Railway.
Importance of Shed:- Angul is the District Head Quarter of Odisha state and is a rich source of the Coal mines at Talcher of the
Mahanadi basin. Besides this, Angul has its importance on the National Geography as a hub of Thermal
Power production by NTPC and with Aluminum & Steel industries like National Aluminum
Company(NALCO), JSPL etc.Due to the above facts, ELS/ANGL has been dedicated to goods locomotive
for transportation of coal, Aluminum and steel especially to Paradeep port , Damonjodi and Visakhapatnam.

Time Line History of ELS/ANGL
29.07.1999:- Initially Diesel Loco Shed/Angul was sanctioned vide Pink Book item No: 327 of
1991-92 for homing of 50 BG Diesel Locomotives.
Diesel Loco Shed/Angul was commissioned on 29.07.1999.
21.08.2002:- Railway Board has decided to convert the DLS/ANGL into ELS/ANGL in 2002
for homing capacity 50 Electric Locomotive in year 1999-2000.
08.12.2005:- Electric Loco Shed, Angul was started with homing capacity of 100 Electric
locomotives with WAG5 electric locomotive in non electrified territory.
After completion of scheduled inspection at ELS/ANGL, the Locomotives were
tested at TLHR which is approximately 22.5km from ANGL.
31.03.2007:- 25 KV OHE was commissioned and line no. 1,2&3 of ELS/ANGL
are charged.
17.04.2007:- HT Testing of electric loco was started at ELS/ANGL.
16.06.2007:- Minor inspection (IC) was started at ELS/ANGL.
11.03.2008:- Major overhauling schedule AOH was started.
01.03.2009:- Homing of WAG-7 locomotive with Hitachi TM were started &
16 WAG-7 locomotive were transferred from ELS/BSL to
ELS/ANGL.
31.03.2011:-Major overhauling schedule IOH was started.
21.03.2015:- 06 numbers of WAG-7 locos fitted with Distributed Power
Wireless control System (DPWCS) has been transferred to
ELS/ANGL from ELS/VSKP. 13.01.2016:- 05 numbers of WAG-7 locos fitted with MPCS has been
transferred to ELS/ANGL from ELS/VSKP. 08.03.2016:- 02 numbers of WAG-7 locos fitted with MPCS has been
transferred to ELS/ANGL from ELS/VSKP.
16.03.2016:- 01 number of WAG-7 loco fitted with MPCS has been transferred
to ELS/ANGL from ELS/VSKP.
Shed Augmentation:
Initial Augmentation as Diesel Loco Shed:- The Diesel Loco Shed, ANGL was sanctioned vide PB No- 327 of 1991-92 at an expenditure
of `34,64,81,000/- for homing 50 BG Diesel locomotives.
Augmentation from 50 Diesel locos to 100 Electric locos:- Proposal for conversion of incomplete Diesel loco shed to Electric loco shed and
augmentation from 50 to 100 AC electric locomotives was sanctioned vide PB no.
273/04-05 with an estimated cost of `10,97,65,883/-
Augmentation from 100 AC locomotive to 150 AC locomotive:- The augmentation work for increasing the homing capacity of ELS/ANGL from 100 AC loco
to 150 loco vide PB No-377/11-12, 366/12-13, 394/13-14, 379/14-15 &498/15-16 at a
estimated cost of `22,13,98,963/- is approximately completed. 100% building work, 100%
shed work & 100% Pit work & 95% electrical work have been completed so far.

MAINTENANCE ACTIVITY OF SHED
The Shed is responsible to carry out running repair of locomotive & schedule inspection (Minor & Major)
regularly.
SCHEDULEACTIVITIES
*POH schedule is not carried out at ELS/ANGL.
PPO is working round ‘O’ clock in shift & finally giving the loco fit for use of traffic.
CLIMATIC CONDITION
Environmental conditions are extreme ie.
• Summer is very hot and temperature shoots up above 45 degree centigrade.
• Winter is very cold and foggy.
• Heavy rain with thundering and lightening.
Ground water table is very low and resulting the shortage of drinking water in summer.

• Check sheets have been prepared for all activities like loco inspection, loco testing,
equipment overhauling, equipment testing, anti derailment, anti skidding, anti stalling,
summer precaution, monsoon precaution, winter precaution etc.

• SIV Cooling fan modification(AAL make):-
ELS/ANGL has indigenously modified 14 Nos. 3-
phase cooling fan of SIV of M/s AAL & Ms
Hirect make using 3- phase auxiliary motor
(Havells, SH, Ranjan, BT, Kirloskar) which is
more cost effective than the existing ZEIHL
ABEGG make motor.
• MPCS input card modification(Medha make) :
Shed has traced out the reason of malfunctioning of MPCS- M/s MEDHA make in
rainy season and modification (increase to sensing voltage of input card from 25
volt to 60 volts) has been suggested to RDSO for implementation. Accordingly,
RDSO has directed the firms for implementation.
• Modification of heater cum blower assembly:- Modification of the terminal of heater
cum blower assembly (from existing Coupler
type to SB type) has been carried out in
aerodynamic MPCS based WAG-7 locomotives of
ELS/ANGL w. r. t. RDSO SMI No. RDSO /
2011/ EL/ MS/ 0408, Rev. ‘0’for easy
maintenance.
• Modification of HMCS switch :- Bypassing of QDs during isolation of
Traction motor by the operation of HMCS in MPCS loco has been detected
by shed and modification (hardware as well as software)has been suggested to
RDSO for further implementation and RDSO has issued modification sheet
accordingly vide modification sheet no. RDSO/2011/EL/MS/0404 Rev’0’ vide letter
no. EL/4.2.15, dated 28.12.2011.

• Brake Cylinder pressure sensing modification:- ELS/ANGL has successfully
carried out Brake Cylinder pressure sensing modification in M/s AAL make ESMON
in co-ordination with firm in loco no.28136/WAG7/ANGL on trial basis. With
this modification the application of both loco & train brakes will be displayed &
recorded in the ESMON with date & time.
• Fabricated an Axle Box Overhauling stand:- ELS/ANGL has indigenously
fabricated an Axle Box Overhauling stand for
overhauling of Axle Box smoothly at shop
floor.
• TFP Oil Filtration stand :-One TFP Oil
Filtration stand has been designed arranged by
ELS/ANGL for carrying out TFP oil filtration
during Major schedule inspection.
•••• Interchangeability of MPCS :- Interchangeability of different make
MPCS (M/s Medha &M/s Stesalit) with same cable layout has been carried out by
shed on trial and same has been suggested to RDSO.

•••• Provision of earthing shunt :- Earthing shunts have been provided in
Microprocessor based control and fault diagnostic system (MPCS), Static Inverter to
improve the reliability of these equipments.
•••• Reduction of time period for major schedule:- The time period for major
Schedule (AOH&IOH) has been reduced by proper planning and utilization of man
power as a result major schedule of 9 to 10 locos has been carried out per month
which was previously 4 to 5 loco per month.
•••• MU formation of MPCS Loco: -
Shed has successfully made MU in Microprocessor based loco of M/s Medha, M/s
Stesalit & M/s SIL after significant modification in the control circuit of loco and so
far completed in all.
•••• Cross MU formation:- Cross Multi Unit of different make MPCS of loco-
28237(MPCS- M/s SIL Make) & loco-28167(MPCS-M/s Medha Make) has
been successfully done at ELS/ANGL.
•••• Single window system:- Single window system has been started for receipt
& dispatch of letters.
• Air dryer test bench:- An Air dryer test bench
has been modified & renovated by ELS/ANGL
& the testing of Air dryer has been started.
• MPH Test Bench: ELS/ANGL has
indigenously fabricated a MPH test bench for
testing of oil pump motor for 5400KVA loco
transformer.
• PT Overhauling Stand:- ELS/ANGL has
indigenously fabricated a panto
overhauling stand for carrying out overhauling
of Pantograph on shop floor during Major
inspection.
• Skill development programmedevelopment programme for I.T.I. students
has been organized by ELS/ANG

• UST of equalizer Beam:- Ultrasonic
testing of equalizer beam of WAG7 loco
has been introduced during IOH
inspection at ELS/ANGL to detect the
presence of flaw/internal crack for
improvement of quality.
• In-house repair of electronics cards of Microprocessor equipped in Electric
locomotives, i.e. 28 nos digital output card, 10 nos CPU card and 04 nos Display card
and saved a revenue of `6,23,318/- approximately.
• Condemnation of Loco no.28138:- Loco no.28138/WAG7/ANGL/ECoR had caught
fire on 08.06.2012 while working in goods train loaded with coal.The JA grade
committee comprising of DSE-4/RDSO, CQAM/CLW & Sr.DEE/TRS/ANGL had
submitted its final investigation report on 05.11.2014.Ministry of Railways has
approved the premature condemnation of fire accident loco vide letter no.
2013/Elect(TRS)/440/6, dated 28.12.2015.The said loco has been offered to
Dy.CMM-III/ECoR/BBS for condemnation through auction vide letter
no.ELS/ANGL/Store/S-26/16/352, dated 19.01.2016.
• Core Lifting of TFP:-
The Shed has carried out the special activity
of core lifting of TFP w.r.t. RDSO SMI-164
during 1st IOH to ensure proper tightness of
core bolts and healthiness of TFP.
Hereby, shed is able to minimize the
premature failure of TFP due to breakage of
core bolts followed by flashing in auto
winding of TFP & safe guards revenue of `
13.58 lac per TFP as a rewinding cost. The
same is completed in 18 locos so far.
• Technical Seminar on GPS based loco:- A technical seminar on GPS enabled
integrated Ver-3 Microprocessor based Fault Diagnostic & Control System has been
organized by M/s Medha at ELS/ANGL on 09.09.2015.The functions of digital input
& output cards, SCU & ISCU and remote monitoring of running & fault data paths
of Ver-3 MPFDCS using internet & GPS are discussed during the seminar.
