Learning Outcomes

1. Compare features of language and communication. 2. Explain how sounds are produced in the English sound system. 3. Produce accurate English sounds in discourse. 4. Analyse the different types of morphemes and word formation processes. 5. Analyse sentences in relation to their word-order and the groups of words they contain. 6. Transfer knowledge of semantics and pragmatics in different contexts. 7. Assess own language progress through reflections/journals.

Synopsis This course equips learners with the basic linguistics knowledge on language, communication, the English Sound System (phonology), morphology, syntax, and semantics needed by an English language teacher.

Kursus ini menyediakan pelajar dengan pengetahuan asas linguistik yang merangkumi pengetahuan bahasa, komunikasi, sistem bunyi (fonologi) bahasa Inggeris, morfologi, sintaks dan semantik yang diperlukan oleh guru bahasa Inggeris.

In groups, categorise the similarities and differences between speech and writing in everyday life situations: news, newspaper, social interaction, dialogues, etc. Prepare your comparison in a table on a poster sheet to be displayed in class

From the problems identified in task 2, choose one (1) problem and think of suitable pronunciation activities to help pupils improve their pronunciation in the English language Malaysian primary school students.

Specify the level of students. Refer to the scheme of work and syllabus while preparing the given tasks.

Write the steps of the activity and state how the teacher will be carrying out the activities with the primary students in the classroom.

Explain the two (2) suitable activities and create appropriate teaching aids to enhance or aid the implementation of the activities in class.

Marks will be awarded for a complete and clear explanation of the stages of the activity. (15%).

Use your own creativity and originality in creating the teaching aids. Marks will be awarded for creativity and originality of aids produced. (15%)

Hand in the write—up of the stages of the pronunciation activity , complete with the teaching aids created.
