ew resorts take full advantage of their natural surroundings like Ladera. Nestled high on a forested ridge 1,100 feet

above the Caribbean sea Ladera is embraced either side by the vast World Heritage twin Piton Mountains, this authentically Caribbean styled resort has arguably the best views of the Pitons.

The elegant tropical architectural design is both natural and, using polished hard woods and colourful tiles, impeccably crafted. Built of Caribbean timbers, local stone and terracotta tiles, Ladera is an eco-conscious property.

Each of the six villas and 21 suites, ranged along the ridge-line, modelled on luxurious tree house living are unique. Rooms are furnished with canopied beds made of rich, polished green heart wood from the rainforest. Crisp, contem-porary white linens adorn the beds as contrast to the colourful ceramic tiles from local craft makers.

his exquisite 5,000-square-foot contem-porary family home on Captiva Flordia, designed in a modern Balinese style with

soaring ceilings lined with woven materials and architectural accents in carved wood, was created by the Award Winning K2 Design Group, a single-source architectural, interior design and construction management firm founded in 1994.

The client brief given to Jenny Carter presidentof K2 Design for this project was clear, havingenjoyed their time in Bali the client wanted aresidence that captures the beauty of a farawayisland, a unique tropical experience with cleanlines of contemporary design. Key to the design are wide open spaces, as the great rooms of Indonesia’s tribal gathering houses were an inspiration.

Comfortable sofas and arm chairs lined with woven reeds are designed for low maintenance and instant relaxation. In the heart of the home, a palette of neutral shades and accents of melon, cantaloupe and tomato blends well with mahogany and sapele in kitchen cabinetry.Wood is sourced from renewable forests.

ocated on Kona Coast, this 18,000 square foot home is designed as variations on a theme: assembly. The owners wanted the

house to encourage interaction while maintain-ing privacy. This was accomplished by taking the Hawaiian building vernacular of pavilions and dividing the program into public and private spaces.

The layers of assembly continue with the individual pavilions. While there is a repetitive structural language, the buildings vary within the theme by type. Creating a ‘kit of parts’ that can be arranged according to the owner’s specified needs of each space unifies the pavilions into one home. The major elements consist of struc-ture and skin, represented in two forms: stone and wood. The stone walls combine the structure and skin into one. The wood walls separate the structure from the skin, with the supportive elements, columns, expressed on the exterior. The wood skin is divided into fixed and moveable panels.

pened in 1998 this tiny private island, rising just a foot or two above the surrounding waters, off Ambergris

Caye is three miles out to sea from San Pedro in the calm waters of the Western Caribbean, off the coast of Belize.

Although Belize is less than two hours from Miami, Houston and Charlotte, it remains virtually undiscovered. As a landmass, there isn’t much to Cayo, a sandy path winds through a forest of palms down the centre of the 4-acre island, branching off to each breezy, mahogany detailed villa, which is screened from its neigh-bours by silver-trunked black mangrove trees.

There are seven stand-alone brightly and tastefully decorated beach villas, Casa Olita, Manana, Brisa, Solana, Estrella, Aurora and ventanas, built out over the water at the end of a 45-metre wooden walkway on the east of the island and perhaps the most intimate, romantic villa on the island .

Completed in 2008, at the heart of the property is the Great Hall, a spectacular main house with soaring 40-foot ceilings and spacious living and dining areas. Towering sliding glass doors open wide to warm tropical sea breezes and breath-taking ocean views. An expansive veranda leads to a dazzling 120-foot infinity pool overlooking the sea. There, amidst swaying palms and surround-ing the main house are five, individual and richly appointed bedroom suites each providing the ultimate in comfort and relaxation.

The entire compound is made from natural materials. Imported Burmese teak covers the floors, walls and ceilings are made with Balinese limestone and Italian marble completes the elegant and airy interiors.

hilst many of the top luxury Caribbean resorts may look similar that doesn’t mean they all offer the same level of luxury, refinery or experience. So what do the very best do to distinguish themselves?, they highlight what makes them Different.

The style and design of many of these resorts can often be referred to as Tropical Modern, a challenge to convention. Combining contemporary architecture with local materials and traditional touches of decor to stunning effect. These are resorts where lines between the indoor/outdoor living experi-ence are blurred. These are resorts which embrace and are at one with their surroundings.

he Beauty of Amanyara is in the simplicity of its design. This contemporary Asian-style Resort is, in its purest form, spacious

and spare timber-and-glass architecture. Yet another example of a handful of bold and tastefully considered Caribbean resorts imbued with graceful tropical modernity that dispenses with all unnecessary decoration. The resort enjoys a pristine location well removed from much of the development on the eastern side of the island.

Opened in March 2006 each of Amanyara’s 40 resort pavilions and 20 adjacent fully serviced private villas, crafted from the finest materials to blend into the scenery, were designed by Belgian-born architect Jean-Michel Gathy.

This expansive low-rise pavilion indoor/outdoor design makes maximum use of kapur and balau wood with shingle roofs of slate-grey African wallaba, oversized windows and glass-panelled walls throughout the public buildings, pavilions and villas to bring the tropics right inside the rooms. Caribbean resort design was in danger of becoming rather predicable, that is until Amanyara came along.
