STEP 1 | AdmissionWho is eligible for Admission?

Anyone 18 years of age or older qualifies foradmission to El Camino College ComptonCenter. If under the age of 18, you will qualifyif you have 1) graduated from high school or 2)passed the California High School Certificateof Proficiency Test.

El Camino College Compton Center mayadmit as a special part-time or special full-timestudent anyone in grades 11 or 12 who, in theopinion of the Vice President, Compton Center,may benefit from instruction. Concurrentlyenrolled 11th and 12th grade students mustcomply with all policies, follow all procedures,and meet all requirements by the publisheddeadlines for each semester and/or session.

California Residence Requirement Can I apply as a California resident?

To attend El Camino College ComptonCenter as a resident of California, a student isrequired to have been a legal resident of thestate, as defined in the California EducationCode, for more than one year immediatelypreceding the residence determination date.The residence determination date is the daypreceding the first day of the semester or ses-sion.

In addition, you must meet the two-yearintent provisions of California residency code,and must not have engaged in any actions thatare contrary to establishing residency in thestate of California.

How Do I Apply?Apply online by visiting: www.compton.edu

and clicking on Apply Online – it’s that easy!New and returning students (those with anabsence of two consecutive semesters, exclud-ing Summer and Winter Session) must com-plete an application. Don’t forget to submitofficial transcripts from all accredited collegesand trade schools attended. If you are apply-ing for Advanced Placement credit, then youmust submit your official high school tran-scripts.

Step 2 | AssessmentHow Do I Make Arrangements For Testing?

Personal identification with a photographand your El Camino College Compton CenterI.D. number are required to take tests andreceive results.

You must have an application on file prior toany testing. Testing should be completed assoon as possible after you file your admissionapplication. Read the catalog description ofclasses which interest you to learn if there isany testing recommended or needed. Keep inmind that all placement tests are part of themultiple measures of the assessment process.Be sure to take testing results with you whenyou go for your academic advisement or edu-cational planning sessions.

The placement tests for English, English as aSecond Language, and Math are computerizedand given on a drop-in basis—no appointmentis necessary. Other tests, such as theChemistry Placement Test, are given on anappointment-basis only. Please contact theAssessment Center for further information at310-900-1600 ext. 2830.

All testing is done on campus at theAssessment Center. Testing must be complet-ed before you register for courses. Re-testingis limited and may not be done after you haveenrolled in any course related to the test. TheAssessment Center is open Monday - Fridayfrom 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and is closed onFridays.

STEP 3 | OrientationWelcome to El Camino College Compton

Center! All students are encouraged to partic-ipate in orientation and to become familiarwith the center and its resources.

Sign-up for Summer & Fall 2010 studentorientations in the Counseling Department,located in the Administration Building.Students learn about Compton Center servicesand programs through the orientation provid-ed by the Counseling Department.

STEP 4 | Counseling/AdvisementHow can I get help selecting classes?

Counseling services are available to studentsthrough scheduled appointments. A studentwho has selected a major field of study isstrongly encouraged to see one of the coun-selors assigned to that field; an undeclared orundecided student may see any counselor.

As an integral part of the matriculation pro-gram, counseling services are intended to assiststudents in clarifying career and life goals andin developing an appropriate course of studybased on a student’s goals, aptitudes and inter-ests.

Drop-in advisement is available Mondaythrough Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.and closed on Fridays for students who havequestions which do not require transcriptreview. The drop-in advisement schedule issubject to change, based on counselor avail-ability. Please call the Counseling Departmentin advance for the daily schedule at 310-900-1600 ext. 2076.

STEP 5 | RegistrationHow do I prepare to register?• Be sure you meet any prerequisites and

corequisites.• Meet with a counselor to ensure your sched-

ule is in line with your educational goals.

ProcedureRegistration appointment information for con-tinuing students will be available beginningMay 10, 2010. For new and returning students,this information will be available on or afterJune 1, 2010. Please go online to www.comp-ton.edu, click on MyECC – RegistrationAppointment Time. You may also check bytelephone by calling 310-516-9339.

Before you go online or register by telephone,you must confirm your registration date andtime.

When Do I Register?Find out your registration date and time – it

is available online at:www.compton.edu - click on MyECC -Registration Appointment Time.

Students may not register prior to theassigned date and time.

How Do I Register?Register online at www.compton.edu and

click on MyECC or by telephone at 310-516-9339. You will be given clear, easy-to-follow,step-by-step instructions. Computers are avail-able for student use in the Welcome Center,Financial Aid, Admission Office InformationalCenter, and Library.

STEP 6 | Pay FeesAll students who enroll in credit classes must

pay an enrollment fee. All fees must be paid bythe fee payment deadlines or you will be droppedfrom all classes. Financial assistance (Board ofGovernor’s Fee Waiver) is available to pay theregistration fees and the health fee if the studentis eligible. A Board of Governor’s Fee Waiverapplication is available online atwww.compton.edu - My ECC, or apply at theFinancial Aid Office.

Until all fees are paid, students will not beable to purchase parking permits, receive tran-scripts, or register for upcoming semesters/ses-sions.

The general fee requirement shall not applyto students enrolled in the non-credit coursesspecified in Education Code Section 84711.

Out-of-state students who have a FreeApplication for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)on file in the Financial Aid Office are encour-aged to submit the preliminary documents forreview as early as possible. Students areresponsible for paying all fees and chargeseven if they applied for financial aid by theestablished deadlines.

AttendanceIf you enroll in a class and you do not

attend the first scheduled meeting of theclass, you may be dropped from the rosterand your place may be given to a waitingstudent.

Financial AssistanceAll students are encouraged to apply for

financial aid by visiting the Financial AidOffice Web site at: www.compton.edu. Beginby clicking the Apply Online button and fol-low the instructions for a new student (neverattended college) or returning student (breakin enrollment) or continuing student (no breakin enrollment) column. Please review theavailable resources on the financial aid Website under the Information Desk, Programs,Services and Free Calculators. California res-idents may wish to apply for a Board ofGovernor’s Fee Waiver (BOGW) to pay fortheir enrollment fees. Students are encouragedto complete the Free Application for FederalStudent Aid (FAFSA) to determine eligibilityfor all federal, state and institutional pro-grams. Some students in certain programssuch as CalWORKS, CARE, or EOP&S mayalso complete the fee waiver application inaddition to the FAFSA form. Please seeenclosed applications.

Fee PaymentFor any fee paid, Compton Center will

accept personal checks drawn on United Statesbanks, money orders or cash.

Also honored will be VISA, AmericanExpress, MasterCard and Discover creditcards. Checks returned by a student’s bank forany reason will result in (1) suspension fromenrollment, (2) denial of subsequent registra-tion and (3) detention of transcript until thefinancial obligation has been satisfied. A ser-vice charge of $20 will be charged on anyreturned check.

Refunds of FeesStudents must drop their classes through the

online system located in the AdministrationBuilding, by phone, or by Web, according tothe following schedule:First Six-Week Session: classes must be

dropped by Thursday, July 1, 2010.Second Six-Week Session: classes must be

dropped by Friday, July 15, 2010.Eight-Week Session: classes must be

dropped by Thursday, July 1, 2010.To receive a refund for a parking permit,

you must return your permit to the Bursar’sOffice (C-36) within this same time period.Refund checks will be mailed before the endof the session.

If your address has changed, please updatethe change in the Admissions Office.

1111 E. Artesia Blvd.; Compton, CA 90221. Be sure to mail your payment 7 daysbefore the deadline. Your check must be received in the Bursar's Office on or beforethe deadline date.

Students on a waitlist for a class must check their El Camino College e-mail daily to findout if they have been admitted to the class. Waitlisted students must pay fees by thesame deadlines listed above, or they will be dropped from all classes.

To receive a refund of non-resident tuition,drop your classes through the online systemby the refund deadlines listed below. Youmay access the online system via the Web, reg-istration phone line, at the Bursar’s window, orin the Admissions and Records Office.Deadline for Non-Resident Tuition:First Six-Week Session:

100% refund for classes dropped byThursday, July 1, 2010.50% refund for classes dropped byThursday, July 8, 2010.

Second Six-Week Session:100% refund for classes dropped byThursday, July 15, 2010.50% refund for classes dropped byThursday, July 22, 2010.

Eight-Week Session:100% refund for classes dropped byThursday, July 1, 2010.50% refund for classes dropped byThursday, July 8, 2010.Refund checks will be mailed by September

30, 2010, to the address you have on file in theonline student system. If your address haschanged, update your address immediately inthe Admissions and Records Office to assureyour refund check is mailed to the correctaddress.

California ResidencyTo attend El Camino College Compton

Center as a qualified California resident, youmust have established legal residence in thestate one year and one day prior to the start ofthe term. In addition, you must meet the two-year intent provisions of California residencycode and must not have engaged in anyactions that are contrary to establishing resi-dency in the state of California. The burdenof proof to clearly demonstrate both physicalpresence in California and intent to establishCalifornia residence lies with the student inaccordance with Education Code Section68040.

The residence of an unmarried studentunder the age of 19 is determined by the legalresidence of the parents. A married minordetermines residency from the date of mar-riage and must comply with all provisions ofresidency as cited above. A person may notderive residence from a spouse.

Priority RegistrationIn compliance with Section 51825 of Title

5, California Administrative Code, priorityregistration will be implemented in this way: 1. Special registration assistance to the hand-icapped or disadvantaged students as definedby statute for the purpose of providing equal-ization of education. 2. Students will receive priority registrationaccording to this ranking system and criteria:• Registration priority will be awarded as fol-

• The instructional activity requires a blockof time associated with scheduled classesfor such activities as practice, meetings,counseling and off-campus travel.

• First semester F-1 visa students.

Adds and DropsIt is the student’s responsibility to process

an official withdrawal from class. Failure todo so may result in a letter grade of A throughF. A student may drop a class or classes with-in the refund period and add another class orclasses using the fees already paid.

If a student drops after the refund deadline,payment of fees for the classes is forfeited.Any added class will require additional fees.

A student may drop a class before therefund deadline and add a class with no addi-tional fees. If a student drops a class after therefund deadline in order to add the same classat a different time/date/instructor, the studentmust request a lateral transfer or level transferfrom both instructors. All transfers areprocessed through the Admissions andRecords Office.

Withdrawal from ClassIt is the student’s responsibility to

process an official withdrawal from class atthe Admissions and Records Office. Failureto complete this process may result in a let-ter grade of A through F recorded on thestudent’s permanent record.

It is the high school student’s responsibilityto submit all required documentation on timeand complete by the published deadlines.Failure to do so will jeopardize the student’senrollment for the semester/session.

Photo Identificationand ASB Stickers

All students are required to obtain a free ElCamino College Compton Center identifica-tion card. These cards are available in theStudent Life Office Monday - Thursday 8 a.m.- 6:30 p.m., closed Fridays, Saturdays,Sundays and holidays.

These cards serve as photo identification,and are required for Library services, studentactivities, access to the Learning ResourceCenter and Open Computer Labs, and to veri-fy attendance in classes.

All students are encouraged to purchase anoptional ASB sticker for their photo identifi-cation cards during registration at the Bursar’sOffice. The ASB sticker offers a variety ofdiscounts at businesses, theaters, ASB spon-sored events, and athletics events. El CaminoCollege Compton Center students can alsoutilize ASB stickers at El Camino College,including access to Activities Center tablegames, free admission to all campus athleticevents and a discount on tickets at district-sponsored Center for the Arts events. Fundsgenerated from the cards help support studentactivities. The $10 sticker fee per semester isnonrefundable.

Children in ClassroomsChildren are not permitted in classrooms

while class is in session. Attendance in class islimited to officially enrolled students andauthorized visitors or guests only. In addition,students shall not allow children to be leftunattended or unsupervised anywhere atCompton Center. It is the responsibility ofeach faculty member to inform students ofthis requirement.

Student RecordsCongress has provided in the “Family

Education Rights and Privacy Act” that stu-dents have certain rights of access to their edu-cation records. A copy of the Act is located inthe Library. Please contact the AdmissionsOffice for any information regarding yourrights under the Act.

Courses completed at other colleges and uni-versities may be used to meet a prerequisite.Some high school courses, as stated in the cat-alog, may also be used to meet a prerequisite.

Order transcripts and clear prerequi-sites prior to registration. Clearance for anequivalent course may be obtained in theCounseling Department or the AcademicAffairs Office (C-32) located in theAdministration Building.

TranscriptsIf you plan to attend under veterans or Social

Security benefits, receive academic advise-ment to become matriculated, or need to havecoursework at other colleges reviewed for pre-requisite clearance, you must request collegetranscripts from all schools you have attendedbe sent to the El Camino College RecordsOffice.

If you plan to graduate from El CaminoCollege with a degree or certificate and wish tohave course work taken at other colleges con-sidered for graduation, you must request offi-cial transcripts to be mailed from the other col-leges to the El Camino College RecordsOffice. Hand carried transcripts from the stu-dent or any other party will not be accepted.

Your first two El Camino College transcriptsare free. Additional transcripts incur a fee asdetermined by college policy and payable atthe time of the transcript request. Transcriptsare processed on a first in, first out basis.

Cross Enrollment at CSU Dominguez Hills

El Camino College Compton Center stu-dents who are eligible may cross-enroll atCSU Dominguez Hills without formal admis-sion and without payment of state universitytuition, in a maximum of one baccalaureate-level course per semester on a space-availablebasis. Such enrollment would be at the discre-tion of the appropriate authorities at ComptonCenter and CSU Dominguez Hills.

A student must meet the requirements ofcross enrollment to be eligible.

To upholdthe academic integrity of the institution, allmembers of the academic community, faculty,staff and students alike, must assume responsi-bility for providing an educational environ-ment of the highest standards characterized bya spirit of academic honesty.

Examples of academic dishonesty includebut are not limited to:• Representing the words, ideas, or work of

another as one’s own in any academic exer-cise including the use of commercial termpaper companies or online sources foressays, term papers, or research papers,whether free or paid.

• Copying from another student or former stu-dent or allowing another student to copyfrom one’s work.

• Allowing another individual to assume one’sidentity or assuming the identity of anotherindividual.

• Changing answers on a previously scoredtest, assignment, or experiment with theintent to defraud.

• Inventing data for the purpose of completingan assignment, a laboratory experiment, orcase study analysis with the intent todefraud.

• Obtaining or copying exams or test questionswhen prohibited by the instructor.

• Giving or receiving information during anexamination or test by any means such assign language, hand signals or secret codes,or through the use of any electronic device.

• Using aids such as notes, calculators, or elec-tronic devices unless specifically authorizedby the instructor.

• Handing in the same paper or other assign-ment in more than one class when prohibit-ed by the instructor.

• Any other action which is not an honestreflection of a student’s own academicwork.

• Other forms of dishonesty, including, but notlimited to, forgery or attempted forgery ofany academic record; alteration or misuse ofcollege documents, records or identification;or knowingly furnishing false information tothe District.

• Unauthorized preparation, giving, selling,transfer, distribution, or publication, for anycommercial purpose, of any contemporane-ous recording of an academic presentation ina classroom or equivalent site of instruction,including but not limited to handwritten ortypewritten class notes, except as permittedby any District policy or administrative pro-cedure.

Responsibility of El Camino CollegeStudents

It is the responsibility of each student to con-duct him/herself in a manner which encour-ages learning and promotes honesty; and to actwith fairness toward other students in theclassroom. This incorporates the notion thatstudents should not seek an unfair advantageover other students when completing anassignment, taking an examination or engag-ing in any other kind of academic activity.

Consequences for Academic DishonestyWhen there is evidence or knowledge of

academic dishonesty occurring, any or all ofthe following actions may be imposed:

1. The instructor may assign a failing gradeto the examination or assignment in which thealleged cheating or plagiarism occurred.

2. The instructor may dismiss the studentfrom the class or activity for the present and/orfollowing class session(s) as stipulated in AP5520, section C.5: Removal by Instructor.

3. The instructor may recommend suspen-sion or expulsion of the student from the col-lege as stipulated in BP 5500, Section III.a andV.d. This recommendation must be in accor-dance with El Camino College’s Due Processand Disciplinary Procedure.

4. An Academic Dishonesty Report Form isfilled out by the instructor and copies are sub-mitted to the division dean and Director ofStudent Development. The Director ofStudent Development will keep this form inthe student file and take any additional disci-plinary action if deemed appropriate. Shouldthere be record of multiple incidents of acade-mic dishonesty or other misconduct commit-ted by a student, they may be suspended fromall classes and campus for up to two years.

The Learning Resources Center (LRC)Computer Asssisted Instruction Lab is open toall currently enrolled El Camino CollegeCompton Center students. Parking, Traffic and SafetyThe El Camino College Police Department

is in charge of the personal safety and securi-ty of all who attend classes, as well as all whoare employed by El Camino College and ElCamino College Compton Center.

The Vehicle Code Laws of the State ofCalifornia, the ordinances of Los AngelesCounty and the Traffic and ParkingRegulations of the El Camino CommunityCollege District are in effect 24 hours per day,seven days per week and are enforced by theEl Camino College Police Department pur-suant to section 21113 (a) (c) of the CaliforniaVehicle Code.

Anyone parking in district parking lots isrequired to display a valid El Camino CollegeCompton Center parking permit in his/hervehicle. Semester parking permits are avail-able for purchase from the Bursar’s Officelocated in C-36.

Parking regulations are enforced seven daysper week, 24 hours a day throughout the year,including weekends and holidays, unless oth-erwise specified. Vehicles parking in staffparking areas must display a valid ComptonCenter staff parking permit. Students/visitorsand the general public may park in staff park-ing areas on weekends and holidays with avalid Compton Center student or daily park-ing permit. Parking availability is subject tochange, and lots may be closed or restrictedfor special events.

Temporary medical parking arrangementscan be made with the ECC Police located inV-72.

Traffic and parking regulations are postedthroughout Compton Center. ECC Police willissue municipal court citations to violators ofthese regulations. Parking violations are aminimum of $30.

The El Camino Community CollegeDistrict shall not be liable for the loss or dam-age caused to any vehicle parked in a districtparking lot.

The basic speed limit is 15 mph in all post-ed areas. All provisions of the CaliforniaVehicle Code and the Traffic Rules of the ElCamino Community College District arestrictly enforced. Police Officers may issuesuperior court citations to violators of theseregulations.

If you have lost property at ComptonCenter, please stop by the Police Departmentoffice Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m.to 4:30 p.m. Lost property not claimed with-in 90 days is disposed of in accordance withdistrict policy.

You may reach the police department in anemergency situation by dialing 9-1-1 fromany pay telephone at Compton Center or bydialing 310-660-3100 from a cellular tele-phone.

First aid, as well as help in all emergencysituations, is provided through the policedepartment.

Disabled Persons ParkingStudents/Visitors with disabilities who have

been issued a DMV Disabled Person (DP)placard may park in any designated disabledperson stall. Disabled persons may park infaculty/staff/ student space and MUST DIS-PLAY the DMV disabled personplacard/plates AND a valid El Camino Collegesemester or daily parking permit when parked.Failure to display the DP placard and a valid ElCamino College or Compton Center permit(when parked in faculty/staff/student space)will result in the issuance of a citation. SeeCalifornia Code of Regulations – Title 5,Section 54100; Ed Code 67301(a).Temporary parking arrangements can be madeat Campus Police Parking Services.

Student Right to Know InformationThe El Camino College Police Department provides professional law enforcement ser-

vices to El Camino College and El Camino College Compton Center. The police depart-ment is located at the corner of Redondo Beach and Crenshaw boulevards in Parking Lot Kand at Compton Center in V-72. The police department provides first aid service in emer-gency situations. You may reach the police department by calling 310-660-3100.

The police department is open 24 hours per day. In accordance with the Federal JeanneClery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, the ECCPolice Department has posted security and safety information, and all required statisticaldata on the police department Web site: www.elcamino.edu/police/. This information is alsoavailable in printed form in the lobby of the police department and can be mailed uponrequest. The police department Web site also offers a wide variety of information about ser-vices and programs provided by the police department.
