Presentation Notes
Who are we in the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy? What do we do? The circle chart sums it up pretty well. EERE manages our investment in applied R&D for Clean Energy Technologies – in Power Generation, Fuels and Vehicles and Energy Efficiency. EERE also includes two offices that deploy these technologies: the Federal Energy Management Program, which works with the other Federal agencies and my office, the Office of Weatherization and Intergovernmental Programs, that work with State and now local governments.

Objectives and Impact of OWIP Programs

Empowering state and local governments to design programs that meet their energy needs, while working towards national goals of energy independence and a transition to clean energy economy.

• Facilitating the adoption of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies to address energy challenges

• Lowering total energy consumption, improving efficiencies and reducing carbon pollution

• Creating and retaining “good green jobs” and training a new clean energy workforce

Regional Cooperation

Puget Sound Region, WA

King, Kitsap, Pierce and Shonomish Counties coordinated grants for electric vehicle charging stations

• Planned for over 100 stations

• Collaboration will ensure the best possible regional distribution

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Snohomish County, WA One of Snohomish County’s EECBG projects includes the installation of approximately 20 solar-powered electric vehicle charging stations at two County facilities. The solar panels were manufactured and installed by local companies within the County. In addition to renewable energy generation projects, the County is retrofitting approximately 20 facilities, which is a cost-effective solution to reducing the County’s carbon footprint. The County’s EECBG projects also facilitate energy conservation and cost savings in the community through energy audits, sub-awards, and an energy efficiency loan program. Once established, the County’s new residential energy efficiency loan program will provide a cost-effective way for residents to conserve energy, save money, and increase the value of their home.

Lee County, FL

• Public-private partnership to secure funding for a biodiesel plant. ($5.5 private funds, $500,000 EECBG). • 92 job expected with the potential for additional jobs in the agricultural industry

• In the first year of operation, the plant is expected to produce 4.3 gallons of biodiesel, 500,000 gallons of which will be used for Lee County government vehicles. The reduction in carbon emissions equates to 37,883 metric tons annually.

•Using EECBG funds, Lee County constructed a photovoltaic system on the Public Safety Building to provide electrical power for the operations of the 24 hour/7 day a week facility. ($325,680 EECBG funds utilized). This system will save 40,150kWH of energy annually and creates 40.15 MWH per year.

•Lee County is utilizing $1M in EECBG funding to conduct Traffic Signal Retiming. This project is expected to save 400,000 gallons of gas annually, which equates to 3,524 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions reduced per year. Traffic congestions will be reduced by 5-20.
