Operational Guidance for Life Cycle Assessment

Studies of the Energy Efficient Buildings Initiative

What is EeBGuide?

The European research project “EeBGuide” develops metrics and guidance for the preparation of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies for energy-efficient buildings and building products. Ongoing research under the framework of the Energy Efficient Building European Initiative creates technologies for an energy-efficient Europe. LCA is used to assess the environmental benefits of new technologies. The EeBGuide operational guidance document will provide a common methodology allowing reliable assessment and comparison of performance of new energy efficiency measures. It will support LCA practitioners in industry and research.

Main goals

The overall goals are:

• To develop a specific guidance document for application to energy efficient buildings and products.

• To develop related training material with courses for practitioners in industry and research.

• To perform case studies (existing and new buildings of different types and products) to demonstrate the applicability of the guidance.

Our new www.eebguide.eu website was formally launched on 3rd of February 2012. It aims to be a source of reliable and professional information that is helpful to LCA practioners, media and the wider public the EeBGuide project. Specifically, the website will provide a dedicated access point for the corresponding handbook sections and exemplary LCA study reporting templates as well as background data required. Additionally, the website will also serves as the platform to enable expert and public consultation procedures. If you wish to make a contribution on the final draft of the document, please contact us at eebguide@info.

Who we are: Project partnersSix partners from five European countries are involved in the project: the Fraunhofer-Institut für Bauphysik (FhG-IBP, Germany), which is the overall coordinator of the project, PE INTERNATIONAL (Germany), Centre

Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment (CSTB, France), Escola Superior de Comerc International (ESCI, Spain), British Research Establishment (BRE, United Kindgom) and Christer Sjöström Consultancy (Sweden).

The EeBGuide kick off meeting was held on 13th and 14th of December in Stuttgart, Germany. The meeting, which was attended by 11 participants, was highly interactive and organized in presentation and discussion (brainstorm) sessions. To start with, every partner gave a short introduction of about 2 minutes. Furthermore, time was assigned to every work package for detailed presentation and discussion on related tasks by respective work packages leaders. Furthermore the process of setting up the list of important aspects and solution approaches was visualized. Aspects of the first draft list of important aspects and solution approaches were summarized.

The stages in the life cycle were broken down into “modules” A to D as used in the standards that have been developed by the CEN/TC 350 working groups – FprEN 15804 and EN 15978. These modules relate to the life cycle stages goes as follows: A: Product and Construction Process stages, B: use stage, C: End of Life stage and D: Benefits and Loads beyond the system boundary.

• EeBGuide holds the 1st Expert Workshop

The first expert workshop took place in Stuttgart on January 24th, at the PE’s offices in Echterdingen. Apart from the attendance of all the partners, Bouygues Construction also joined the workshop. Bouygues is a global player in the fields of building, public works, energy and services and clearly could provide valuable expert input. The purpose of the meeting was to review the aspects and issues identified, their agreed solutions upon relating

to the life cycle assessment (LCA) and the approach to be taken to resolve those where solutions have not yet been agreed. The results were broken down by life cycle stages (using Modules A-D from the CEN/TC 350 Standards) and also by their phase in the LCA process. Special attention was given to those aspects which are not satisfactorily dealt with by existing standards.

• EeBGuide at the 2nd Workshop on Impact of the Energy-efficient Buildings PPP

EeBGuide was kindly invited by the European Commission with the support of the Energy-efficient Buildings Association (E2BA) at the 2nd Workshop on Impact of the Energy-efficient Buildings Public Private Partnership (EeB PPP). Bastian Wittstock, Head of Group Sustainable Construction from Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics attended the meeting on behalf of EeBGuide. Bastian Wittstock gave a short presentation in the

session 1 ´Development of new technologies in EeB´. The purpose of the workshop, which took place in Brussels on the 14-15th of March, was to enhance the cooperation links within the PPP and to facilitate the assessment of its implementation. Different sessions addressed the technological coverage of the PPP roadmap, as well as innovation and exploitation issues. The panel discussion focused on the added value of

Upcoming events

EeBGuide consortium and LCA experts will be attending the 2nd Expert Workshop on the 10th and 11 of May in Paris at the CSTB offices.Invitations were sent to European experts on LCA in the field of sustainable building and products.

In total, four different organizations including Tecnalia, Inèdit Innova, UPM, Acciona, UJI will be also attending the workshop aiming to contribute into the development of the EeBGuide.

• Midterm general assembly and the 2nd Expert Workshop coming soon

• Multi stakeholder´s participation: EeBGuide soon opens the public consultation process!

After the drafting of the document, it will be revised by the Expert Group in the course of the second expert workshop. In addition, in the framework of consultation, a group of non-experts will be asked to revise the document regarding its comprehensibility using the web platform revision system. The main goal of the consultation round is to validate the advanced guidance document by investigating the appropriateness, completeness and user friendliness in a prototypical manner. To ensure transparency, a ´comment´ and ́ reply´ document regarding all comments and suggestions

received during the consultation process will be published together with the finalized draft guidance document.

All the comments received during the consultation process will be included at the guidance document, which will be then critically reviewed by the Review Panel. The feedback received will be used to finalize the draft guidance document and the reporting templates.
