ACTUALIDAD DIRECTORA GILLIAN FLAXMAN

Estimadas familias:

Estamos analizando los resulta-

dos de los cuestionarios que les

enviamos y me alegro informarles

que hemos recibido más de 200

respuestas. El mes que viene les

contestaré sobre sus inquietudes

y comentarios e iniciaremos algu-

nos cambios.

Estamos todos ilusionados con la

nueva producción musical de este

trimestre, “Cats” (Gatos) y espe-

ramos que participen muchos

alumnos, tanto de primaria como

de secundaria. Trabajar en las

obras de teatro o musicales es

una parte importante de nuestra

educación y hay muchas formas

para que los estudiantes pue-

dan participar, ya sea cantando,

bailando, ayudando a pintar los

escenarios o con el vestuario. Por

favor, animen a sus hijos/as a in-

teresarse sobre estas posibilida-

des.

HEAD OF PRIMARY - UPDATE FROM SUSAN

From Friday 29th January we

will be introducing (on a trial

basis until the end of the

term) a weekly newsletter

sent out at the end of each

week, from the primary de-

partment. It will contain infor-

mation about all the events

that have taken place in the

primary school in the previous

week, any dates for your dia-

ries and announcing our

weekly Star Pupils of the week.

This initiative is designed to

help us with keeping parents

informed on a much more fre-

quent basis. The current whole

school newsletter will continue

to be produced on a monthly

basis.

This newsletter will also be

posted in the parents´ gateway

of the school website so that

you can look at a colour copy

and download photographs as

well.

We will also be working towards

sending all communications –

such as trip letters – out on a

Friday with the weekly newslet-

ters to establish a regular pat-

tern of communication. Shortly

before the end of term I will

contact you asking for your

feedback to this trial. In the

meantime if you have any ideas

about what could be included in

the weekly newsletter please do

not hesitate to contact me.

Effective communication in

schools is so important and I do

hope that you find that these

weekly newsletters assist in

making sure that you know ex-

actly what is happening in

school at all times.

Estimados

padres:

A partir del

los padres informados de una

forma más periódica. Nuestra

Carta Informativa actual conti-

nuará saliendo mensualmente.

La expondremos en la hoja de

los padres (Parents’ gateway)

en la página Web para que pue-

dan verla en color y bajarse fo-

PRIMARY-NEWS YEAR 1 & 2—EAT WELL AND USE GOOD MANNERS

BY MRS S BRIGGS

The children in Key Stage

One have all been working

hard to eat well and display

good manners. Our new

initiative in which the chil-

dren can earn a sticker to

put in their healthy eating

and good manners pass-

port, has proved very popu-

lar with children eagerly

working towards the com-

pletion of a full passport.

Each day, teachers focus on

different areas such as us-

ing a quiet voice, trying

new foods, using a knife

and fork and remembering

to say please and thank

you. Once a passport page

has been filled a Bronze

certificate is awarded

which, with continued ef-

fort, can be boosted to a

Silver Certificate and finally

children can earn a Gold

Certificate. These are

awarded and celebrated in

the KS1 assemblies.

YEAR 1P—MAKING A BEAT WITH BY MRS S BRIGGS

Class 1P are enjoying playing their percus-

sion instruments during their Music lesson.

They are learning new songs each week

and are finding out what sorts of sounds

the instruments make. Class 1P are trying

to keep a steady beat to the music and

listen to the rhythm.

YEARS 3, 4 & 5 - CHESS TABLES ARE A GREAT SUCESS BY MS. G. OWER

In 1M we have been ex-

ploring stories with pre-

dictable and patterned

language.

All of the children have

enjoyed drama activities

based on the story of The

Enormous Turnip. Not

many people know that this

popular story was first writ-

ten by the Russian author

Alexei Tolstoy.

In class we have studied the

original version. In the pic-

ture you can see the farmer

Ruben, the farmer’s wife An-

drea, their grand-

daughter Semsema, the

Dog played by Ashton,

the Cat Gabriella and the

popular at break times

that games are even

use different methods to help

us recognise numbers.

On Monday 18 January 2010,

Year 3 went on a Geography trip

in the local San Pedro area.

As part of our study of the local

area, we observed the features

that we saw as we were walking

around. As we walked, we plot-

ted landmarks on a map, and

noted all the natural and man

made features on it.

At the beach we did a survey,

looking at the quality of the local

environment. We thought of ways

that we could improve it.

We had a fantastic time and we

learnt a lot! We will continue to

use our fieldwork as a base for

future work in class.

It was a great trip, and we all

learnt a lot!

YEAR 4 - LEARNING STRATEGIES

Part of our course work in Numeracy in

year 4 is to learn different stategies and

methods to be able to subtract. Mr

Finca´s lesson was a good example of

that. Kids suggested different ways of

subtracting and then applied those strate-

gies playing a very interesting game called

BRAINY CARDS. Every one was really in-

volved in the game, shared ideas and

more importantly had lots and lots of fun.

SEPARATE A DISSOLVED SOLID FROM A SOLUTION BY MRS N. DE COMARMOND AND MRS MACK (PARENT HELPER)

Year 6 have had

the opportunity

of working in

the science lab,

learning the

names of different pieces of equip-

ment and carrying out an experiment

using Bunsen burners. New scientific

vocabulary was learnt and the chil-

dren all said they had a lot of fun!

The task was to evaporate the water

from 50ml of salt solution, so only

the salt was left behind. One beaker

of solution acted differently to the

rest and overflowed leaving salt on the watch glass!

The class are all eager to visit the science lab for an-

other lesson.

PRIMARY—YEARS 2,3,4,5,6 AND 7 FUND RASING CHRISMAS DISCO FOR CHARITY

BY MR. S. ROBINSON

On Friday 18th December the Pri-

mary School Council organised a

disco for all the children in years 2

– 6 to raise money for the Elliott

George Foundation in Este-

pona. All of the children made

a donation and were allowed

to come to school in non-

school uniform. We then had

the disco in the afternoon,

where there was dancing, re-

freshments and a prize raffle.

Many children won prizes and

we would like to thank the

parents for donating these.

We would also like to thank

Julie from the Elliott George

Foundation for all her help on

the day and we were very

glad to be able to hand her a

cheque for €1100 for the

SECONDARY NEWS HISTORY - YEAR 9

SLAVERY AND ABOLITION BY MR. MARCOS

Our year 9 students have been studying the topic “Slavery and abolition” in History.

At the end of this topic we completed a project on slave re-volts during the 18th and 19th centuries. The students found out about Touissant L´overture, a slave

who led a revolt against the French in the island of Haiti. Although hundred of revolts occurred dur-ing the slave era, only the revolt led by Touissant was suc-cessful in perma-nently abolishing slavery and establish-ing the first republic

ruled by blacks. Haiti is not just the only French-speaking inde-pendent country in the American conti-nent; it was also the first country founded by freed slaves.

Sadly, Haiti is now on the news for very dif-ferent reasons.

SECONDARY NEWS ICT— PROJECT YEAR 7

BY GINA COHEN

First I started off doing the disco ball with the ellipse

shape and the curve line tool, then I drew the out-

line of the person with the line tool, then I did the

floor also with the line tool and then coloured it in,

next I detailed the person and also coloured him in

and at last I finished it off with the disco lights by

using pencil to draw it and airbrush to do as if the

light was coming out. I also used airbrush to make

little circles as if the little square mirrors of the disco

ball were shining. My picture is from Saturday night

fever.

First, I inserted a big square for the background and I also

did smaller squares in 3 lines for the floor. I coloured the

squares and then on top I started doing the person.

For the person I did lots of different sized rectangles and

squares, I did a circle for the head and put everything to-

gether and coloured it. Secondly I made the disco ball and

the lights making ovals and a circle and little squares for the

disco ball mirrors. next I made tiny circles and coloured

everything in. to finish I grouped all the shapes together

for it to be 1 whole piece.

Pupils in year 7 are currently

completing stage 2 of their Pro-

ject. This stage involves the pu-

pils recreating their original

graphic. However, this time,

instead of using the painting

package—Microsoft® Paint they

are using Microsoft® Word to

produce their graphic. This al-

lows the pupils to consider the

differences in the drawing tools

between different packages and

to adapt their work according to

the tools provided.

As you can see Ines has cre-

ated two excellent images

using two completely different

sets of tools and techniques.

Year 9 students are currently studying an EU

country.

Mr Craven set them a task to research an EU coun-

try and produce a poster about their selected coun-

try. There were some very good posters which are

now on display.

More recently they were asked to research any

French city (except Paris). They were then to pro-

duce a poster detailing facts about the place. Mr

Craven now knows more about Lyon than he ever

did, and Mr Marchand was delighted to see his

home city, Nantes, on display.

Year 8 - Have been study-

ing energy resources. Their

recent focus has been the

use of alternative energies.

Mr Craven asked the stu-

dents to design their ideal

sustainable home using

these technologies. They

produced some fantastic

work. Credit must go to

SECONDARY NEWS NEWS FROM THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

BY MRS F MUÑOZ

YEAR 7 - TRADITIONAL TO MODERN BY MS. GOODWIN

We are delighted to announce

that the poems of 69 of our KS3

pupils at Laude San Pedro have

been selected by the Young

Writers’ Bust-A-Rhyme po-

etry competition which took

place in November 2009. There

was a Certificate of Merit for

every student whose work was

chosen for publication and an

Anthology will be published af-

ter final judging of the poems

has taken place and all prizes

have been awarded by the

judging committee.

The aim of the contest was to

encourage the writing of English

poetry, by publishing examples

of the best work received. They

provided the opportunity for

many national and international

students to see their work in

print, and also to compare it

with the work of students of a

similar age. It was also impor-

tant that their writing skill was

given an audience where it

could be shared and enjoyed by

others.

Our KS3 pupils enjoyed both

writing and sharing their poems

and they found this a very re-

warding experience, motivating

them to write and appreciate

poetry in a fun way. We were

delighted to see how proud they

felt when they saw their poem

was going to be published.

Young Writers run an annual,

nationwide poetry competition

and this is our third year of suc-

cessfully holding this contest at

Laude San Pedro. We are de-

lighted with the positive re-

sponse from our young poets

and we would like to encourage

them to continue taking part in

future Young Writer Competi-

tions and therefore boost

awareness of our school’s crea-

tive ability.

Outstanding achievements by

KS3 pupils.

Year 7 have been working

on a literacy project to de-

velop their longer writing

skills.

They were given a well-

known fairy tale and listed

approximately ten key

turning points in the story.

They then had to turn

each of the traditional

points listed into a modern

setting. Finally, they

added extra detail so that

it read like a proper chil-

dren’s story.

Over the next few

weeks they will be cre-

ating their own story,

based in and around

familiar places. They

will need to make plans

about the plot , charac-

ter, setting and loca-

tion.

LAUDE NEWSLETTER - YOUR VOICE! BY PHOEBE BRIGGS

After a very enthusiastic

response to last term's

debates prior to Christ-

mas, Laude has started a

regular club on a Thurs-

day for students. There is

a good mix of ages, with

Georgina Carey and

Megan Robinson from

year 7, right up to Head-

boy Jorge Bernabe San

Juan from year

13. This term we have

debates scheduled on a

h o s t o f i s s u e s ,

from whether music

downloading is truly a

crime, through school is-

sues such as uniform, up

to the demand for

equality in society and the

morality of abortion.

Hopefully this will take

root and in the coming

term and into next year

we can continue to build

the club and generate

larger and larger audi-

ences. Thus far, we have

a small but committed

group who are developing

confident public speaking

skills and learning how to

research and argue topics

themselves.

TENNIS & PADEL CLUB

The club of padle and tennis

Nueva Alcantara is a very edu-

cational place to go if you are

interested in learning how to

play padel or tennis.

They also offer additional

services; hairdresser, a dance

club and a fitness/gym class.

There many experienced teachers, as well as very

professional pupils. Everyday from 5:00 to 6.00

and then 6:00 to 7:00 there are classes taking

place. Nueva Alcantara is open everyday, so you

are welcome to come and see!

Sam Gulliver

has been ap-

pointed Laude

San Pedro

Chief Corre-

spondent for a

new magazine

´Joven Mar-

bella´ for the

Ayuntamiento de Marbella.

Detailed below is his first article

to introduce the magazine

reader to the college.

Laude San Pedro International

College is a school based

around learning and under-

standing, not just the exam

board syllabus but the diverse

cultures and languages that ex-

ist among my classmates. With

the excellent facilities such as

overhead digital projectors in

every class room and three sci-

ence laboratories it is able to

achieve a high standard of edu-

cation and provides us with a

solid basis on which to proceed

upwards to higher education as

well as helping us socially

through an emphasis on toler-

ance and respect. Sports facili-

ties are used to maximum ef-

fect both to allow us to unwind

between lessons and to encour-

age greater moral values such

as good sportsmanship and

teamwork. While the standard

working day may be enough for

some, we can always join in

with extra curricular activities

as well, for example Chinese

club, the newsletter club, the

debate society and many more.

Sports can be played whatever

the weather either outside on

the basketball, volleyball or

football courts or inside on the

spring floor of the gym with the

capacity to house up to 500

spectators. Having been at the

school since year 7 and now

studying my A levels I find that

the majority of my time here

will be remembered fondly, my

classmates have all been amaz-

ing and so has the experience

as a whole.
