次の文章を読んで,後の⑴~⑼の各問いに答えなさい。
What do you do on Christmas day? If you live in the United
Kingdom, Poland, Italy or Brazil, the answer is probably stay at home,
spend time with family and perhaps go to church. If you live in Japan,
China, Iran or Thailand, you probably go to work or school as normal.
This is because Christmas day is a national holiday in many countries
with a Christian 1 but it is not treated as such in other
countries. Most countries around the world have national holidays
(sometimes called public holidays), which are set down in law as days
when government offices and 2 such as banks, schools and
universities are closed and employees and students are free for the day.
Many national holidays are⑶
centered around religious celebrations or
important days in the history of the country. Christmas and Easter are
important dates in the Christian calendar. In Islamic countries Eid al
Fitr is an important holiday that marks the end of the Ramadan period
of fasting. In Thailand the holiday of Maka Bucha is celebrated to mark
the teachings of the Buddha. In France Bastille Day is a national
holiday that remembers the French revolution in 1789 which led to the
⑷overthrow of the king and the establishment of the French republic. A
similar national day holiday is observed in the United States of
America. Independence Day falls on the fourth of July and
⑸commemorates the Declaration of Independence in 1776 when the
American colonists declared their independence from Britain. Most
countries in the world have some form of national day like America and
France. This may be a date when the country achieved its independence
from a colonial master, or a day when the country was unified, as in
Germany, where the unification of East and West Germany in 1990 is

marked with a holiday. Another source for a national day is the holding
of the first elections, as in the case of South Africa, which held its first
fully democratic elections in 1994. In Japan, National Day is the date
when the first emperor came to power in ancient times. 6 , only
two countries in the world, Denmark and the United Kingdom, do not
have a national day.
The number of legally decided national holidays varies considerably
from country to country. The nation with the most national holidays is
Cambodia with 28 public holidays. India has 16 public holidays per year
and even the Japanese, who have a reputation for being⑺
diligent, enjoy
a generous 15 days of public holidays a year. Four of these are
combined into the Golden Week holiday period, which, if combined with
a weekend, can give Japanese workers and students a long spring break.
At the other end of the scale, workers and students in the United
Kingdom, Spain and Canada get only eight days a year and, coming in
last place, Mexico has only seven national holidays a year.
The dates of many national holidays are fixed, meaning they fall on
the same date every year. Christmas in most countries is fixed on the
25th of December, although members of the Orthodox Christian faith,
such as in Georgia and Ethiopia, celebrate Christmas on the seventh of
January. Other fixed holidays are July fourth for American Independence
Day and Bastille Day in France, which is celebrated on the 14th of July
every year. Other national holidays have dates which vary from year to
year. For example, the Easter holiday, an important Christian holiday, is
decided by the lunar cycle and can fall on any Sunday from March 22nd
to April 25th. Eid al Fitr falls on the same date every year in the
Islamic calendar, which is lunar-based, but moves approximately 11 days
every year in the western calendar, which is solar-based. Many national
holidays in Japan used to have fixed dates, but in 1988 there was a

revision to Japanese law called the ‘Happy Monday System’ which moved
many national holidays to Mondays to give workers and students a long
weekend. The same system applies in Britain, with many national
holidays, referred to as ‘Bank Holidays’, falling on a Monday.
Whether you want to celebrate your country, take part in a religious
festival or simply relax with family and friends, national holidays are a
welcome break for everyone.

次の文章を読んで,後の⑴~⑼の各問いに答えなさい。
Some of the earliest pieces of representative art in the world are
the Lascaux cave paintings in France. The images on the walls of these
caves are thought to be about 17,000 years old and are listed as a
UNESCO world heritage site. The caves contain⑴
approximately 6,000
images that can be grouped into three main categories: animals, human
figures and abstract signs. There are no 2 of plants or of the
local landscape. This is interesting because it reveals the special
importance of animals to humans even from ancient times.
The relationship between humans and animals is complex and
nuanced. Some animals are completely wild and cannot be domesticated.
Historically humans had very little effect on these creatures. Lions,
giraffe, zebra and other large mammals that live on the African
savannas are probably the most⑶
prominent category of wild animals in
the world today, although in the ancient past there were many large
wild animals all over the world such as mammoths in Eurasia and huge
sloths in Australia. Apart from wild animals the other categories of
animals are: domesticated, tame and feral animals. Domestication refers
to animals that are bred in captivity by humans. Humans observe the
behaviors and characteristics in each generation of animals. They then
choose individual animals that have desirable points such as passive
behavior or large body size and then control the reproduction of these
animals through selective breeding. That is, they only allow animals
with 4 characteristics to produce young that also have these
characteristics.
The earliest domesticated animals were dogs, which were
domesticated from wolves during the time when humans were hunter-

gatherers. Some studies date the domestication of dogs to about 15,000
years ago. These early dogs were bred for their friendliness and lack of
5 to humans and later on for other traits such as speed or size.
Other domesticated animals are the horse, cow, pig and goat, all of
which are native to Eurasia. Other regions of the world had a lack of
animals that could be domesticated, which may have contributed to
lower levels of economic and cultural development in the distant past.
Tame animals are different from domesticated animals. Taming is
the control of a wild-born animal so that its natural instinct to avoid
humans is⑹
lessened and it will accept the presence of humans. Animals
such as cheetahs and Asian elephants are animals that can be trained
to accept close contact with humans, but are still wild in their basic
nature, unlike fully domesticated animals such as pigs and chickens.
Feral animals are animals that come from ancestors that were
previously domesticated but now live in the wild with little or no contact
with humans. Some of these animals live truly in the wild and have
little interaction with humans. Camels, although not native to Australia,
were introduced by European settlers as they were ideally suited to the
⑺conditions of the Australian outback. Once motor vehicles replaced
camels as a means of transport, many camels were released into the
wild. It is estimated that there are now some 300,000 camels living wild
in the outback. Cats are another animal that can easily become feral,
although in the case of cats, they can continue to live alongside humans
in urban areas. Cats, if left to themselves, often do well living in feral
communities and their numbers may grow very quickly.
The human relationship with animals covers a very wide range of
interactions. Humans actively protect some wild animals such as pandas
and rhinoceroses. Other animals are considered pests that spread
diseases and harm crops or pose a danger to people. Rats, mice,

190601E2_10mosquitoes and snakes are among the animals that are generally feared
and disliked. Some animals such as horses are kept mostly as working
beasts while others such as pigs and chickens are kept for food. At the
most intimate level dogs, sometimes referred to as ‘man’s best friend’,
fulfill a huge variety of roles such as guide dogs, guard dogs, racing
dogs and pets kept purely for companionship and affection. And then
there are animals that are considered sacred, such as the cow in Hindu
communities of India or the cat in ancient Egypt, where there were
severe penalties for harming a cat.
Whatever the status of any particular animal, from loved pets to
feared and hated pests and dangerous beasts, human culture has been
closely connected to the lives of animals since the dawn of human
history. Humans are surrounded by animals, and even in modern urban
societies, far removed from hunter-gatherer societies of prehistory,
illustrations of animals are a common 8 of clothes, packaging,
wallpaper and advertisements. Just like the ancient artist who painted
the cave walls in Lascaux, modern people still like to see animals or
pictures of them.

One evening early this summer, I opened a book and found myself
reading the same paragraph over and over, a half dozen times before
concluding that it was hopeless to continue. I simply couldn’t marshal[注1]
the necessary focus. I was horrified. All my life, reading books has been
a deep and⑴

. Now,
2 reading books, I was spending too many hours online,
shopping for more colorful socks even though I had many already, and
guiltily clicking through pictures with headlines such as “Awkward Child
Stars Who Grew Up to Be Attractive.” During the workday, I checked
my email more times than I cared to acknowledge. [. . .]
I resolved to limit my Internet use. My⑶
initial commitment was to
limit my online life to checking email just three times a day: when I
woke up, at lunchtime and before I went home at the end of the day.
On the first day, I succeeded until midmorning, and then completely
broke down. I was like a sugar addict trying to resist a cupcake while
working in a bakery.
What broke my 4 that first morning was the feeling that I
absolutely had to send someone an email about an urgent issue. If I
just wrote it and pushed “Send,” I told myself, then I wasn’t really
going online.
What I failed to take into account was that new emails would
download into my inbox while I wrote my own. None of them required
an immediate reply, and yet I found it impossible to resist peeking[注3]

the first new message that carried an enticing[注4]

the next day, I had given up trying to cut back my digital life. Even so,
I was determined to succeed. Several weeks after my 30-day experiment
ended, I left town for a monthlong vacation. Here was an opportunity to
focus my limited willpower on a single goal: liberating myself from the
Internet.
I had already taken the first step in my recovery: admitting my
powerlessness to disconnect. Now it was time to detox. I interpreted the
traditional second step belief that a higher power could help restore
my sanity in a more secular way. The higher power became my 30-
year-old daughter, who disconnected my phone and laptop from both my
email and the Web. Unburdened by much technological knowledge, I had
no idea how to reconnect either one.
I did leave myself reachable by text. In retrospect, I was holding on
to a digital life raft[注5]
. Only⑹
a handful of people in my life communicate
with me by text. Because I was on vacation, they were largely members
of my family, and the texts were mostly about where to meet up at
various points during the day.
During those first few days, I did suffer withdrawal pangs[注6]
, most of
all the hunger to call up Google and search for an answer to some
question that arose. But with each passing day offline, I felt more
relaxed, less anxious, more able to focus and less hungry for the next
shot of instant but short-lived stimulation. What happened to my brain
is exactly what I hoped would happen.
I had brought more than a dozen books of varying difficulty and
length on my vacation. I started with short nonfiction, and then moved
to longer nonfiction as I began to feel calmer and my focus got stronger.
I am back at work now, and of course I am back online. The
Internet isn’t going away, and it will continue to consume a lot of my
attention. My aim now is to find the best possible balance between time

intentional about where I put my attention. When I’m online, I
try to resist surfing myself into a stupor[注7]
. As often as possible, I try to
ask myself, “Is this really what I want to be doing?” If the answer is
no, the next question is, “What could I be doing that would feel more
⑼productive, or satisfying, or relaxing?” If I have other work during the
day that requires sustained focus, I go completely offline for designated
periods, repeating my morning ritual. In the evening, when I go up to
my bedroom, I nearly always leave my digital devices downstairs.

次の文章を読んで,後の⑴~⑽の各問いに答えなさい。
Research indicates that the longer you live, the more likely you are
to become happier. As it happens, happiness traverses[注]
a U-shaped curve:
we’re happiest in our childhood and old age. Happiness levels steadily
drop during early adulthood, bottoming out in our mid-40s. By age 50,
those levels are on an upswing again.
Our sliding happiness curve is 1 stress and significant life
changes during our 20s, 30s and 40s: working long hours, establishing a
career, getting married, raising children, caring for ageing parents,
putting away money for the future, et al [and so on].
And⑵
perspective does come with age. “In the 50s and later, there is
an acceptance of one’s abilities and achievements along with a reality
check,” says Dr Prabha Chandra, professor and head, department of
psychiatry, National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences
(NIMHANS), Bengaluru.
“The optimism of youth, which can reflect a magical type of thinking
that⑶
success in life is inevitable, is replaced by the reality that things
aren’t always good. However, there is also the understanding that good
can come from bad,” adds Lisa F. Carver, an adjunct professor in the
sociology department at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario,
Canada.
Do you have friends or relatives whom you can⑷
confide in? If yes,
then you’re automatically happier than people who have no one to turn
to for advice or companionship.
According to the Harvard Study of Adult Development that⑸
tracked
the lives of 724 men, over the past 75 years, there are three big lessons
to be learnt about relationships: social connections are good for us,

loneliness can kill and perhaps the most important one it is not the
number of friends or social connections you have but the quality of your
close relationships 6 matters.
So, though research indicates that people who are married or live
with their partners tend to be happier than those who are⑺
unattached
simply because the former are less likely to be lonely, it’s the texture of
your relationships that makes the difference. Happiness researcher, John
Helliwell, an advisor to the Happiness Research Institute and professor
emeritus of economics at the University of British Columbia in Canada,
who is the first to examine the intersection of marriage and friendship
and its effects on happiness, says, “Calling your spouse your best friend
is another way of saying ‘I’ve got a pretty happy marriage’.” Regardless
of the status of one’s relationship, people who have⑻
someone to count on
are happier, simply because they’re less likely to be lonely.
