Classics majors studying abroad can benefit from new perspectives on the languages and cultures of Greece and Rome, while the literature and history of these societies can take on new meaning when studied in their original settings. Students who have taken part in these programs report that the experience enriched them academically and also made them more attractive to potential employers. ACADEMIC & TIMING CONSIDERATIONS Students wishing to study abroad must have a GPA of 2.5 (or higher for some programs). Depending on the program, you may receive either direct or transfer credit for completed courses. The Department of Classics and the International Studies Office recommend planning for your international experience as early as your first year; we encourage you to meet with an education abroad advisor, as well as the Director of Undergraduate Study. Classics majors should consider how study abroad can best be integrated with the Greek and Latin language sequences. STUDENT TESTIMONIALMy experience at ICCS deeply enriched my understanding of the ancient world. Through language courses, the City Course–a class designed to enhance the precious facets of Rome, both the ancient and the modern–and living in Rome taught me to fully appreciate Latin literature in light of its socio-political context. However, not only the courses but also the students at ICCS enriched my knowledge of the Classics. In a word, ICCS is a community...[that] attracts exceptional human beings, and it was a joy to live alongside such students, who shared my love of Classics. -Kira McBride, Duke: Italy: Rome: Intercollegiate Center forClassical Studies
