COMMEMORATING THE150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE

FIRST SITTING OF PARLIAMENTSubmitted by Jim Eglins-

ki, MP – Yellowhead

On November 6th our Conserva-tive leader, the Honourable Andrew Scheer, gave a speech in the House of Commons, commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the first sitting of Parliament. His speech made me more proud to be a Canadian and even prouder to be your representa-tive in Yellowhead. We are fortunate to live in this great country, Canada.

This is a time of giving and remem-bering what we have.

I encourage everyone to read his speech.

“Mr. Speaker, for 150 years, our Parliament has been a reflection of Canada and Canadians. It is more than a building. It is the embodiment of our national character, its virtues and vices, its strengths and its weak-nesses.

It has been burned to the ground and been built back up stone by

stone. It has heard the echoes of gun-fire, and felt the blast of a bomb that, thankfully, detonated mere minutes prematurely.

It has rung with cheers of victory at the end of two world wars, and it has stood mute witness to the tears of a nation mourning distinguished former members of this House lying in state, from Sir John A. Macdonald to the hon. Jack Layton.

The legislative measures debat-ed and passed in this chamber help

Canada progress and, unfortunately, they also sometimes set us back. Our House has seen legislative measures that support our liberties and others that limit them.

This is a physical place, but also an institution, and as an institution made of human beings, the out-comes are not always perfect.

As Canadians, we must not forget our past. We must never be afraid to admit when we have made a mistake and to apologize when necessary.

That is why Prime Minister Harp-er came to the House nine years ago and issued a formal apology to for-mer victims of the Indian residential schools on behalf of a country that had failed them. It was appropriate, because so many of the decisions that caused so much grief and suf-fering had been deliberated and, in some cases, approved right here in this building.

That we who have been trusted with the governance of Canada have sometimes failed should not be sur-prising. This chamber may be made of wood and stone, but the men and women who give it its life are hewn from the crooked timber of human-ity. These chairs have supported patriots and heroes, but also a few rogues, so we cannot claim to have always been perfect, but we know that perfection is not available to us this side of eternity. Yet, somehow, the motley and imperfect assemblag-es that have gathered here over the last 150 years have achieved some-thing of a miracle.

Together, the members who came before us superintended a Canada that has grown and flourished be-yond what anyone in the first Parlia-ment could have dreamed.

It is fashionable today to look down at the past, but that is a luxury we enjoy from heights built by those who preceded us in this chamber. If we look back at our rich history and study the leading figures in its telling and see only the blemishes, then we are missing out on the beautiful sto-ry of a country constantly bettering itself, and consistently offering a ref-uge to so many around the world. It is a story of different parliaments at different times, working through the imperfections of the day. It is a story that on the whole has been a story of hope for so many. It is a story of prosperity, compassion, liberty, and

Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the First Sitting of Parliamenthuman rights.

To those who deny we have any-thing to be proud of as a country, I would pose a simple question: “Where else would you have rather lived for the last 150 years?” That is not a rhetorical question. It is a straightforward question for which there is only one honest answer. There is nowhere we would rather have lived, no country we would rather call our home, for no country has acquitted herself better at home and abroad than Canada.

It is indisputable that the world has been better off for the last 150 years because of Canada. Without the sacrifices of our soldiers, sail-ors, and airmen, more than 100,000 of whom paid the ultimate sacrifice, while many more came home bear-ing scars, mental and physical, the world would be more dangerous.

Without the brilliance of our art-ists, painters, sculptors, writers, singers, and actors, the world would be losing part of its cultural richness.

Without the work of the men and women who cultivate, farm, and de-velop our incredible landscape, who fish in our three great oceans that surround us, and who work in the towns, plants, and office towers, the world would be poorer, colder, and darker. If we dwell on past mistakes, we miss out on their remarkable suc-cesses. We end up taking for grant-ed their contribution to Canada and Canada’s contribution to the rest of the world.

It is time for a little gratitude. Make that a lot of gratitude.

That we have prospered and flour-ished is no accident. It is a combina-tion of good fortune and good stew-ardship. We are fortunate to have inherited the most stable and endur-ing political system in the world. We should be grateful to the members of the House who have nurtured and sustained it for the benefit of Canadi-ans and the inspiration of the world.

For it is to this House that world leaders have come over the last century to express their admiration of Canada as the very exemplar of peace, order, and good government. It was here that Churchill came in Britain’s darkest hour, when Hitler’s armies were within sight of English shores, to thank Canada for our sup-port and to display his jowl-shaking defiance in the face of Nazi aggres-sion.

Later, we were engaged in a very different kind of war against Soviet imperialism, a battle not just based on geography but on ideology, a bat-tle to defend the economic freedom that had created untold prosperity for so many millions around the world, yet a freedom that was de-nied to so many. During that battle, two of the great figures of the 20th century, Ronald Reagan and Mar-garet Thatcher, each came to this House twice to thank Canada for our friendship and dedication to key principles.

More recently, Ukrainian Presi-dent Petro Poroshenko came to Can-ada while his country was suffering under a new Russian imperialism, to praise “the special partnership between Ukraine and Canada” and to salute Canada as a model for Ukraine and for the world.

It is in our nature as Canadians to be self-deprecating, but sometimes, maybe once every 150 years, it is okay to acknowledge what the rest of the world tells us: we occupy a special place in the fellowship of free nations and our institutions, in-

cluding this Parliament, are the envy of other nations.

I am not asking members of the House to pat ourselves on the back and congratulate ourselves for as-suming this awesome duty. Rather, let us roll up our sleeves and get to work in the House and across Can-ada to continue the work of those who came before us so that those who come after us, 150 years from now, will consider us worthy of the same gratitude we offer today to our predecessors.”

“LIGHT UP YOUR LIFE” CAMPAIGNNOVEMBER 1 – DECEMBER 31, 2017

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS IN SUPPORT OF PALLIATIVE/HOSPICE AND CONTINUING CARE IN THE COMMUNITIES OF SPRUCE GROVE, STONY PLAIN AND PARKLAND COUNTY

Submitted by Linda Mc-Creath, Chair | Light Up Your Life Society

The Light Up Your Life Tri-Community Palliative/Hos-pice Care Society is a charitable organization, coordinated and run by volunteers which accepts donations throughout the year to enhance the quality of life indi-viduals and their families in our communities who are living with life threatening illnesses, and/or are in a continuing care or hos-pice setting.

The 2017 Light Up Your Life campaign goal is $100,000.00 with our estimated expenses at $1,500.00 The campaign runs from Nov. 1 – Dec.31, and the money raised will be used to provide a coordinated effort for the purchase of enhanced equip-

ment and special services. Such equipment and services are to be used by continuing care, pallia-tive and hospice clients living in their homes or designated publicly funded facilities in the Tri-Community area. We are confident that with the continued generous support from commu-nity members throughout the year, as well as during the cam-paign, we will raise sufficient money to fund the purchase all approved equipment.

As a volunteer-run organiza-tion, and with ongoing and gen-erous sponsorship support, the Light Up Your Life campaign expenses are kept remarkably low to ensure that on average each year 97% or more of the funds raised are used to support the people in need in our own communities.

Each $10.00 Donation to the 26th Annual “Light Up Your Life” Campaign will illuminate a clear bulb on one of the cam-paign symbols that will glow in memory of a loved one. A list of the names of individuals remem-bered is published in our local newspapers at the end of the campaign. In addition, your do-nation continues to support peo-ple requiring palliative/hospice and/or continuing care by pro-viding enhanced equipment and support services that will be used in the WestView Health Centre, the three Good Samaritan Care facilities, and in clients’ homes. This year the ultimate goal is to purchase all of the following equipment as sufficient funds are raised:

EQUIPMENT ITEM• (2) Ceiling Lifts w/Maxi Sky

is $97,943.24Any surplus funds will be used

“Light Up Your Life” Campaign$178,000.00 has been given in support to purchase equipment, furnishings and décor items, as well as having created patient support initiatives such as the Art Cart, Gift of Care bags and most recently the Light Up Your Life 25th Anniversary Hospice Garden.

The funds raised throughout the year are also used to cover the cost of special support such as funding Educational Opportu-nities for frontline palliative and hospice Staff and Volunteers, as well as supporting the cost of special equipment requests as they arise.

The “Light Up Your Life Tri-Community Palliative/Hos-pice Care Society” is confident in reaching and surpassing the 2017 campaign goal of $100,000.00. The success of past campaigns has been absolutely outstanding, and during the past 25 years over $1.5 Million has been raised by the Society … testimony to the belief that the members of our communities have in this truly worthwhile cause.

The symbols of “Light Up Your Life” that are illuminated in memory of loved ones are:

• “Circle of Hope” in the Park-land County

• “The Murals” in Stony Plain• “Dove of Hope” in Spruce

Grove• “Tree of Hope” in Wabamun• “Wave of Hope” in Seba

BeachIn 2004 the Light Up Your

Life Society was recognized by the Alberta Association of Reg-istered Nurses for its long term commitment and dedication in support of the palliative and continuing care clients in the Tri-Community area. In 2010 and 2011 the Society was nom-inated for the AFP (Association of Fundraising Professionals) Volunteer Philanthropy Award. The LUYL Society is also the honoured recipient of the 2015 Alberta Minister’s Seniors Ser-vice Award.

The Light Up Your Life So-ciety’s fundraising efforts are organized and coordinated by a

group of volunteer directors and members at large who remain mindful of the needs and support required to enhance the lives of the individuals in our communi-ties who require specialized care and/or equipment or services. The goals and objectives of the Light Up Your Life Society are only achievable with the sup-port of the individuals, service groups, businesses and organi-zations within our communities.

Their consistent and increasing support over the past 25 years has been truly remarkable.
