Dear All,
Welcome to our second summit. This summit is unique not only because of the several dignitaries that are present but also the theme of the summit which is Sustainable Investment: Diaspora Action Plan for Transforming Health, Education and Agriculture in Edo State. At this time more than ever before, there is need for massive investment in Edo state to provide employment for the teeming population of unemployed graduates/school leavers and also improve the living standard of the general population.
Please feel free to participate in the various discussions and other events that are taking place. Your ideas are needed to solve the numerous health, education and agricultural problems that Edo state faces.
I hope also that you donate generously to the various projects we intend to execute in the coming year.
Again you are all welcome. I hope you have a thrilling summit. Sincerely,
Dr. Oboma AsemotaPresident

Dear All,
This Summit marks a historic moment for the entire members of the Edo Leadership Assembly (ELA), because of the esteemed presence of our Grand Patron HRH Crown Prince Eheneden Erediauwa, Ediaken n’Uselu, Ambassador Extraordinaire and Plenipotentiary of Nigeria to Italy and Albania. We are grateful to His Royal Highness for accepting our invitation to visit America and participate in the deliberations of the Edo Leader-ship Summit. We would also like to recognize the presence of our Governor, as well as acknowledge his good works in Edo State. The Governor is marching towards the dream of attaining the yearnings and aspirations of our people, therefore, all hands must be on deck to support him!Though ELA is not a political organization, however, we are willing to applaud anyone who believes in, and practices good governance; irrespective of political party affiliation. Hence this year, we have chosen to recog-nize the good works of Comrade Governor Oshiomhole with an award for Distinguished Service. Above all, we are happy to note the cordial relationship between our monarch, His Royal Majesty Omo n’Oba n’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Erediauwa CFR and the Executive Governor of Edo State. Let me also use this opportunity to wish the President and my fellow citizens of the Federal Republic of Nige-ria, a happy 50th Independence Anniversary.Last but definitely not least, I would like to use this medium to thank the great Benin philanthropist, Capt. Hosa Okunbo. ELA is eternally grateful for your contribution to the success of our 2009 summit.

ELA in 100 WordsThe Edo Leadership Assembly is a Benin organization with pan-Edo sensibilities. The group’s focus are three-fold: address unique problems affecting contemporary descendants of the Great Benin Kingdom, create a platform for the crème de la crème of the Edo diaspora to contribute to the development of Edo State and develop programs to assist Edos abroad achieve upward mobility. ELA has various activities to advance its goals /mission. The annual Leadership Summit- strictly by invitation, is open to indigenes and friends of Edo State. The goal of the Summit is to proffer tangible solutions that will advance development in our State.
IntroductionThe Edo Leadership Assembly was founded in 2008 to foster cross-ethnic collaboration, focused and goals orientated diaspora engagement and contributions to the development of Edo State. While also addressing specific issues that impact Benin people. The principal organizational vehicles for our activities are:
❂ Programs and Events
❂ Projects that will benefit all Edos, irrespective of language or ethnic affiliations
❂ Policy briefings
❂ Collaboration with other groups
❂ The Benin Foundation Inc.
MissionTo develop a leadership cadre of men and women, committed to advancing the social, cultural, economic and political interests of Edo people.
Vision:❂ To work collaboratively with other ethnic groups in Nigeria
❂ To advance Edo Development goals
❂ To promote the unity, development and advancement of Edo people
❂ To foster capacity building and leadership development
❂ Oyayasimwin Evbuomwan – PATRIOTISM ELA sees the need for a movement that is dedicated to addressing issues that affect Edo people, by allocating time, resources and skills to advance the Edo development agenda. It recognizes the cardinal notion that, with few exceptions, the Edos can look to no one, but themselves to improve their station in life.
❂ Edoyęmwen -- DIGNITY Pride in and knowledge of Edo tradition, culture, history, and peoplehood. Edoyęmwen is the need to have pride in our people, without being maligned and relegated to a position of irrelevance. Edoyęmwen connotes pride, self-respect and the dignity in being an Edo.
❂ Akugbe – UNITY Creates within the Edo man or woman the knowledge that it is Edo unity, hard work and self-discipline that will lead to the triumph of the Edo people.

Our Grand PatronHis Royal Highness, Crown Prince Eheneden Erediauwa
Ambassador Extraordinaire and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to Italy and Albania
HRH Crown Prince Eheneden Erediauwa was sworn in as Ambassador Extraordinaire and Plenipotentiary of Nigeria to Italy on July 21, 2008 and Albania on December 2, 2008. Prior to this, he served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Sweden with concurrent accreditation to the Kingdoms of Norway, Denmark and the Republic of Finland. He was therefore responsible for managing Nigeria’s relations with the whole region of Scandinavia. Due to his royal pedigree, while he was in the Scandinavian countries, he was treated to royal receptions by the King of Norway and the Queen of Denmark and the President of the Republic of Finland. During his tour of duty as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Angola, Crown Prince Eheneden Erediauwa played an integral role, in collaboration with other stakeholders, in the eventual peace accord between President José Eduardo dos Santos and the late rebel leader, Jonas Savimbi. HRH was the only civilian in a pre-reconciliation meeting attended by high ranking military officers from different African countries. The meeting was crucial to the peace that was eventually brokered between the warring factions in Angola. In addition to being an Ambassador, he is also the Crown
Prince and heir apparent to the throne of the Benin Kingdom, one of the foremost Kingdoms in Africa. His father, His Royal Majesty Omo n’Oba n’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Oba Erediauwa CFR, ascended the throne on March 23, 1979, making him the 38th Oba (King) of the dynasty since the inception of the Benin Kingdom in 1180 AD.The Crown Prince’s traditional title is: His Royal Highness, Edaiken n’Uselu.HRH has extensive experience as a diplomat; he has travelled the World and met with a diverse array of political leaders, captains of industry, civil society activists and world renowned scholars from different countries. Beyond his diplomatic credentials, Crown Prince Eheneden Erediauwa is an investor with business interests in various industries: petroleum, construction, education and food processing. The Crown Prince is a known philanthropist and an avid supporter of arts and culture; he was recently invited to Sweden for the opening of the Benin arts exhibition at the Museum of Ethnography in Stockholm. He is the founder of The Benin Royal Dynasty Trust, a not for profit organization with the sole mission to economically empower the poor and disenfranchised, by utilizing holistic and sustainable methods of personal and community empowerment. As both an Ambassador and Royalty, His Royal Highness has negotiated various economic and cultural initiatives for investors interested in doing business in Nigeria and with government entities interested in arts and cultural exchange opportunities with the Benin Kingdom. The Crown Prince is committed to sustainable economic development and he is at the vanguard of the economic and socio-cultural renaissance of the Benin Kingdom.

About AtlantaAtlanta pronounced ( is is the capital and most populous city in the State of Georgia. As of 2009, Atlanta had an estimated population of about 541,000 people. Its metropolitan area is the ninth largest in the country, inhabited by about 5.5 million people. Moreover, the Atlanta Combined Statistical Area has a population approaching six million, making it the most populous metropolis in the Southeastern United States. Like many areas in the Sun Belt, the Atlanta region has seen explosive growth since about 1976, and it added about 1.1 million residents between 2000 and 2008.
Atlanta is considered to be a top business city and is a primary transportation hub of the Southeastern United States - via highway, railroad, and air. Atlanta contains the world headquarters of such large corporations as The Coca-Cola Company, Georgia-Pacific, AT&T Mobility, the Cable News Network, Delta Air Lines, and Turner Broadcasting. Atlanta has the country’s fourth-largest concentration of Fortune 500 companies (although UPS, Home Depot, and Newell Rubbermaid are not within its city limits) and more than 75 percent of Fortune 1000 companies have business operations in the metropolitan
area, helping Atlanta realize a gross metropolitan product of $270 billion, accounting for more than 2/3 of the Georgian economy. Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport has been the world’s busiest airport since 1998 (measured by number of passengers).
Atlanta is the county seat of Fulton County and the location of the seat of government of the State of Georgia. A small portion of the City of Atlanta corporate limits extends eastwards into DeKalb County. Residents of Atlanta and its surroundings are known as “Atlantans”.

Edo State the Heartbeat of Nigeria
The Benin Kingdom was founded in 1180 AD. The first European travelers to reach Benin were Portuguese explorers in about 1485. A strong mercantile relationship developed, with the Portuguese trading tropical products, for European goods and guns. In the early 16th century the Oba sent an ambassador to Lisbon, and the king of Portugal sent Christian missionaries to Benin. Some residents of Benin could still speak a pidgin Portuguese in the late 19th century. The first English expedition to Benin was in 1553, and a significant trade soon grew up between England and Benin based on the export of ivory, palm oil and pepper. Visitors in the 16th and 17th centuries brought back to Europe tales of “the Great Benin”, a fabulous city of noble buildings, ruled over by a powerful king.
A series of walls marked the incremental growth of the sacred city from 850 CE until its decline in the 16th century. In the 15th century Benin became the greatest city of the empire created by Oba or King Ewuare. To enclose his palace he commanded the building of Benin’s inner wall, a seven mile (11 km) long earthen rampart girded by a moat 50 feet (15 m) deep. This was excavated in the early 1960s by Graham Connah. Connah estimated that its construction, if spread out over five dry seasons, would have required a workforce of 1,000 laborers working ten hours a day seven days a week. Ewuare also added great thoroughfares and erected nine fortified gateways. Excavations also uncovered a rural network of earthen walls 4 to 8 thousand miles long that would have taken an estimated 150 million man hours to build and must have taken hundreds of years to build. These were apparently razed to mark out territories for towns and cities. Thirteen years after Ewuare’s death tales of Benin’s splendors lured Portuguese traders to the city gates.[1]
A seventeenth century Dutch engraving from Olfert Dapper’s Nauwkeurige Beschrijvinge der Afrikaansche Gewesten, published in Amsterdam in 1668 wrote:
“The king’s palace or court is a square, and is as large as the town of Haarlem and entirely surrounded by a special wall, like that which encircles the town. It is divided into many magnificent palaces, houses, and apartments of the courtiers, and comprises beautiful and long square galleries, about as large as the Exchange at Amsterdam, but one larger than another, resting on wooden pillars, from top to bottom covered with cast copper, on which are engraved the pictures of their war exploits and battles...”
Benin resisted signing a protectorate treaty with Great Britain through most of the 1880s and 1890s. However, after the slaying of eight British representatives in Benin territory, a ‘Punitive Expedition’ was launched in 1897, in which a British force, under the command of Admiral Sir Harry Rawson, conquered and burned the city, destroying much of the country’s treasured art and dispersing nearly all that remained. The portrait figures, busts, and groups created in iron, carved ivory, and especially in brass (conventionally called the “Benin Bronzes”) are now displayed in museums around the world.
