11 EDITORIAL NOTICES Papers submitted for publication should be sent to the Hon. Secretaries, Maason House, 26 Portland Place, London, W.I., and will be understood to be offered to this Journal alone. Those already issued even in mimeographed form will not be accepted for publication. The copyright of papers which are accepted becomes the property of the Society ; but they may be republished by permission, provided that due acknowledgemcnt is made that they have appeared in the TRANSACTIONS. Papers should be typewritten on one side of the paper only, in double spacing, with adequate margins. They should be concisely written (many of those sent in are extravagantly long, with much needless repetition). The subject matter should be logically arranged and sub-divided ; with references and abbreviations in the form described below. Often a long review of the literature of a subject is given and is no more than a copy of what has appeared many times before ; in such cases, a single reference to an earlier compilation would cover much of the ground. Authors are expected to revise their typescripts thoroughly before submitting them, and so galley proofs are sent for checking and not for rewording, unless some error or misstatement has become apparent--" It should be a point of honour not to inflict upon printers and publishers the burden of irritating afterthoughts and infirm vacillations." Tables are costly to print and shouhl be as few as possible (the data in many of those submitted could be adequately given in a few lines of text) ; they should be typed on separate sheets, numbered and referred to in the text by roman numerals. Each table should have its own explanatory heading. Graphs and line drawings should be in Indian ink on plain white paper, Bristol board or faintly blue-llned paper. Letters, numbers, etc., should be clearly written or stencilled in Indian ink. All graphs and line drawings should be larger than the probable size of the finished block, and care should be taken to allow for reduction in size of lettering. Legends and captions should be typed on a separate sheet and numbered to Correspond. Figures should be comprehensible without reference to the text, Illustratlons.--If the number sent in is considered excessive the author may be informed and given the opportunity of contributing to the cost of reproduction ; otherwise the number of illustrations may be reduced at the Editor's discretion. Coloured plates are made only at the author's expense. REFERENCES All references should be given in the text, thus : " . . . it has been shown (MANSON, 1879) . . . " " It has been shown by MANSON (1879) that . . . " The final list of references should be arranged in alphabetical order according to the name of the first author cited, and should include (1) author's name, (2) initial, (3) date of publication, (4) name of journal, (5) volume, (6) page number. (The titles of papers are not necessarily printed, but if given are helpful in checking references). References to books should include (1), (2), (3) as above ; title of book, edition and/or volume if more than one, page number, town of publication and publisher's name. References to Annual Reports : SWAZILAND (1937). Annual Medical and Sanitary Report, 1936, p. 16. Note.--The year of publication is not usually the year covered by the Report. Abbreviations. Where possible, titles of journals should be shown as abbreviated in the World List of Scientific Periodicals- in general, nouns have capital, adjectives small, initial letters ; articles, conjunctions and prepositions are omitted ; the place of imprint is added only when un- certainty might arise ; thus Trans.
