Representatives of Duffield Cricket Club, who wished to discuss the new pavilion, attended a meeting with the Parish Council and raised doubts about the viability of the project because of difficulty in raising funds. In the current financial climate the stakeholders have found it difficult to raise any meaningful funding in the last three years even though the Council had offered to match funding up to £500,000. The Cricket Club has urgent needs to repair and improve the existing pavilion and have taken the reluctant decision to focus efforts in this area, thus withdrawing from the Duffield Community Sports Association. This position means that there can be no further consideration of an enlarged pavilion that could be used by all sports users, although the Cricket Club remains committed to working with other local sport and community groups by continuing to make the cricket facilities available. The Council agreed that they should review all facilities on Eyes Meadow and tailor any Parish Council development to the needs of its users. The Parish Council has started to meet with representatives of the other main users of Eyes Meadow in order to understand their requirements for facilities there. They have decided to move tothe Austrian Alps and start anew business venture. They have bought a chalet tooffer holidays for the winterand summer seasons. The decision to up sticks andmove hasn’t been one that wasmade over night... it took acouple of years planning tomake the jump. However they bothcommented: “It really wasn't ahard decision for us" saidIngrid and her husbandAnthony, "Austria has to beone of the most beautifulcountries there is and you caneasily hop on a plane and bethere in just under two hours!”Their children Jack (10) andLydia (5) are both reallyexcited about the move.Jack is looking forward tojoining a football team as hehas played for DuffieldDynamos for the last sixyears. The carnivaatmosphere continued with theegg throwing and a tug of warwhich brought the crowd intothe arena. It was great to see somany joining in. The arena also sported VisionDance who gave us a bright andcheery display, andCalidoscopio Drummers whocarried on the entertainment. Thanks for theresponse from thelast article and aquestion that cameup consistently was:“When should wevisit a chiropractor?”Simply, if yousuffer from anymusculoskeletalpain a chiropractorwill give you a neurologicaland orthopaedic evaluation, which will narrow yourspecific symptoms and signsdown to a diagnosis withwhich he will manually beginworking with. We treat to reduce pain anddiscomfort, all the timelooking for a primarydysfunction that may causethe chain of events, compensations and reflexesthat weaken the tissue eitherlocally or away from thedysfunction. This weakness can result instrain, which will lead to joint, ligament, muscle or other

disorders. In many casesthese pains canreplicate organpain, or vice versa, organ pain mayseem like muscularor joint pains. It is our job aschiropractors torule out any

potentially dangerous causesand make sure that the causeis treatable by chiropracticmethods. There is plenty of research tosuggest that chiropractic helpcan ease musculoskeletalpain, and improve function.Chiropractors do not prescribemedication, though we are notagainst it, and will help togradually get our patientsback to normal strength andstability with long lastingeffects. Please call us at GenesisIntegrated Health, 01773-240020, for an appointmentif we can help.

Did you know Duffield has two BeaverColonies?1st Duffield Scouts has two very activeBeaver colonies Willow (Tuesday) andAppletree (Friday) run by enthusiasticvolunteers for children aged six to eight.Activities include hiking, orienteering andscavenger hunt.Willow had a fun and educational visit to our local dairy- Duffield Dairy. There were calves being fed with milk, adults feedingin the barn, but no sign of the bull who must have heard the beaverscoming and hid! The milking parlour and bottling plant were spotlessalthough the beavers found some muddy puddles and had a great timegetting muddy and stroking the calves. Many thanks to John and hisfamily who made us feel very welcome.

The recruitment drive, as publicised in Scene, culminated with a meeting at the S Following which, two new Beaver Scout Leaders, three Cub Scout L

Willow and Appletree Beaverscombined catching the train up toCromford where we had a picnic andwent for a walk along the canal. A goodtime was had by all.

When Beavers reach eight they ‘swim’ up toCubs as part of the ceremony. The pictureon Greys Rec shows the Beavers lining thebank whilst a Beaver is hauled into cubs.Nine Beavers moving up to Cubs at the startof the September term have gained theChief Scout Bronze badge, the highestaward available in the Beaver Scout sectionso a huge congratulations to them all fortheir hard work and dedication.

The colonies are active in the community (Appletreeabove) taking part in both Remembrance Sunday andSt George’s Day parades.

The Willow visit to Tissington WellDressings was rather damp, the welldressings still looked really good and wehad an interesting evening walkingaround the village.

There is somethingdelightful about watchingchildren, beside themselveswith joy, wonder anddisbelief, standing in astrawberry fieldsurrounded by ripe fruitthat can be eaten withoutreservation whilst thegrown ups pick fruit totake home. Mouths arestuffed full to bursting, juice runs down chins, hands are delightfullysticky and attempts to savethe biggest ones bymistakenly putting theminto pockets, causesinevitabledisappointment! Such opportunities forgluttony do not present veryoften! This surprising hot summerweather has at last producedgluts of produce in thegarden, in the fields and onthe meadow. However, in my garden, thepeas never reach a saucepanas fistfuls of pods arepopped open to provide amouthful of sweet, juicyjewels and even thetomatoes are eaten beforethey get to the table. One thing I have noticed isthe lack of blackfly this yearalong with a dearth ofhoneybees. My broad beans and runnerbeans are relying on thehover flies, wasps andbumble bees for pollination. This relative lack of sapsucking aphids is not goodnews for birds such as bluetits and makes the job offeeding young even harderfor the swallows and housemartins that are gracing theskies above the meadow intheir continual search forfood whilst on the wing. These graceful summervisitors can be seen

swooping low over theponds and thewetland areawhere there isoften anabundance offood, theirbeaks open totrap theinsects intheir throats.Swallows arethe ones withthe slenderforked tail, amore acrobatic, swooping, flowingflight mostly low to theground and a beautiful, liquid twittering call. House Martins have ashorter tail and broaderwings, a flutteringbackwards flick of the wingsin flight (often flying higherthan swallows) and their callis a drier, twittering song.Even higher in the sky, oftenscreaming in groups, are thelarger, sickle shaped swiftswhose chocolate brownplumage appears almostblack in profile against theblue sky. They are unusual in that theyspend their whole life on thewing – they eat, collect nestmaterial in the air and evensleep whilst flying. This evolutionary trait alsomeans that they cannot walkwell on their very short legsand they only land whennesting and brooding theiryoung!

Their feet haveforward facingtoes that arevery strong togrip on oncecrawling intothe nest. They have avery widegape to theirshort beaksand prefer toeat aphids ormidges thatmay be swepthigh by the wind

but will takeanything that they can

swallow but not includingstinging insects like wasps. No one knows how theyavoid these as they eatharmless hover flies thathave the same markings. Eating on the wing like thishas been compared to livingoff beans and peanuts andtossing them in the air andcatching them in your mouthwhilst running along atspeed!Swifts have no crop (theelastic pouch that most birdshave in their lower throat) socollect food for their youngin balls in their mouths, sticking the hundreds andsometimes thousands ofinsects together with salivafrom their enlarged salivaryglands.During an aphid plague inOxford, one food ballcontained 726 aphids, 48leaf hoppers, 22 spittle

bugs, 23 crane flies, 18dung flies, 13 ladybirds,120 ants and various otherinsects like spiders caughtas they fly around ongossamer threads.Swifts live for 10 to 15 yearsmigrating to and fro fromAfrica via France and Spainand they tend to have thesame partner for years. When bad weather threatens, the parent birds will fly intothe wind for up to 600 mileseach way to find food, oftennot returning for two or threedays. The young swifts go into asemi hibernating state with aslower heartbeat andmetabolism whilst theyawait their return. Fledglings can feedthemselves from the momentthey leave the nest and thenmigrate to Africa with theadults. They may be permanentlyflying for the first 4 years oftheir lives before finding amate and nesting.Make the most of admiringthese remarkable birds –they are usually all gone bythe end of August and arefollowed by the Swallowsand House Martins thatgather on telephone lines inlate summer, looking for allthe world as if they arediscussing their ownforthcoming Africanjourney, before flying south.Every time I sit andwatch these birds whenI am walking on themeadow – oftenwatching as they diptheir beaks for a drinkin the big pond – Iknow why our NatureReserve is importantand why we mustpreserve thebiodiversity of ourlocality.

Derbyshire Constabularywishes to remind membersof the community to use thenational 101 number toreach police in a non-emergency. The force launched the newnumber in October 2011 aspart of the national scheme tomake it cheaper and easier tocontact police. More than 60per cent of non-emergencycalls to Derbyshire police nowcome through on the 101number as opposed to the old‘0345’ number with thatfigure steadily increasing. Unfortunately a small numberof calls that are notemergencies come through topolice via 999 as the callerdoesn’t know the newnumber. This could prevent genuineemergency callers gettingthrough to police. The policesay that the number isgenerally working well and isfar easier to remember thanthe old number and in themain people are now

Cricket from back pageIt was back to winning waysat Ambergate where thehome side was restricted to196 for 8 after being put in.Alex Jones (4 for 49) and twowickets each for RichardJordan and Peter Jenkins didthe damage. It took Duffield - 198 for 4only 42.3 overs to gain victoryby six wickets with skipperPaul Bakel leading the waywith 74 and goodsupportingroles from Tom Roe (32) andChris Sheldon (29 not).SECOND XIPut into bat by ChesterfieldBarbarians at Eyes Meadow,Chris Sheldon with a pleasing114 (1 six and 14 fours) and

skipper Russell King 76 (2sixes and 10 fours) looked tohave given Duffield 2nd XI achallenging total of 255 for 5in their 46 overs. But it needed four run outs tohold on for a winning draw asthe Barbarians fell eight runsshort with the last pair in.Whew!Mark Antill (3 for 40 off 14overs) was the only bowler torestrict Sandiacre Town’sbatsmen as they piled up 247for 6 after deciding to bat atEyes Meadow but were thanmore than a little shocked asDuffield, led by skipperRussell King’s brilliant 130not out including 16 fours andtwo sixes and Will Whitten’s

supporting 59 saw Duffield -251 for 4 - to a six wicket win.Fantastic!Opener Chris Sheldon with102 not out led Duffield to arespectable 228 for 7 atAlfreton where the home sidefinished on 161 for 6 makingno effort to win.Philip Jordan scored anundefeated 128 - his firstcentury - as Duffield reached222 for 7 at home toAmbergate. The bowling of WillEisenberg (4 for 38) and lewisReed (3 for 14) led to an 85run victory.3rd XIChoosing to bat first Duffieldcould only manage 191 for 9

(Dave Bingham 57) againstClowne who got home byseven wickets despite AlexBurnham’s 4 for 43.Travis Birtwhistle’s 5 for 35and 76 with the bat sparked a52 run victory at Sawley &Long Eaton but there wasdefeat at Nutbrook beforeanother win by 152 runs - athome to Sawley. 119 byBirtwhistle and 49 from AlfieKelly saw Duffield reach 245for 7 declared.
