From the Head of Junior School Dear Parents Musicians’ Cup was held on Thursday evening last week. This is an adjudicated instrumental competition for Junior School boys who are proficient musicians. A record number of boys entered this year’s event, with 28 fine individual performances on the evening. Without exception, every boy performed well with a diverse range of instruments being played across a broad repertoire. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and I acknowledge all boys who entered the competition, along with their families for valuing music as one of the many opportunities available at our School.

Further information is contained within this newsletter and nomination forms for next year’s positions were sent home today. Staffing Mr Jordan Swinney, who is currently teaching Year 3 on a one year contract, has accepted a full-time, permanent position at Highlands Christian College for 2020. I congratulate Mr Swinney on this appointment and thank him for his work at our School this year.

Drought Relief On Tuesday, Junior School boys participated in ‘Dress as a Farmer’ for the day to raise much needed money for those who are impacted by the drought. A staggering $1500 was raised and will be donated to Drought Angels. Drought Angels is an Australian Charity that supports Australian farmers and their rural communities with meaningful and personalised assistance. They provide food hampers, care packs, prepaid visa cards and local store vouchers. I particularly thank three Junior School parents, Mel Sutcliffe, Margaret Lindemann and Amanda Thurbin for their drive and support with this fund raising venture.

Class placement of students Placing students in classes for the following year is a process in which we invest a great deal of time and care. This is always announced in the middle of Term 4 and prior to Orientation Day in November. In many schools, this information is typically held back from parents and children, being announced almost as school commences in the New Year. Spending time sorting this out and announcing this in a timely manner treats boys and parents with respect and alleviates anxieties that can often arise simply through the lack of knowledge about what is occurring. This process has now been finalised and this information will be provided to parents and boys next week. I ask parents to trust the professional judgment of the teaching staff and more broadly of the School with regard to class placement as this is viewed very seriously and has taken some time. This is done in a careful manner ensuring classes are balanced both academically and socially and boys are matched with teachers and with one another. From Head of Teaching and Learning Results Over the past few weeks, results from testing and competitions have started to arrive at school. We have again recorded some very pleasing scores and a number of boys will be recognised at upcoming assemblies for their achievements, once the School has received the certificates from the various companies. The results of the Australian Maths Competition saw one boy achieve a High Distinction, 14 boys achieve Distinctions and a further 14 boys achieve Credits. Our boys performed similarly well on the various ICAS competitions. I wish to congratulate all of the boys who entered into these competitions. GPS Day of Academic Excellence Recently, I outlined that we would be hosting the GPS Day of Academic Excellence. The event occurred last Tuesday and was a huge success. Our boys engaged in the challenging activities with a quality attitude and enjoyed the opportunities provided. They represented our school very well through their welcoming approach to their GPS colleagues, hard work and enthusiasm on the day. Music News Musicians’ Cup Congratulations to all boys who performed in the Musicians’ Cup last Thursday evening 17 October. The standard of performance was extremely high and all boys should be commended for their efforts. Thank you to our adjudicator, Mr Neil Flottmann (Director of Creative Arts and Extra-Curricular Programs at West Moreton Anglican College) who travelled from Ipswich to adjudicate this event. Year 6 transition to Senior School – Music ensembles To assist with the transition to the Senior School next year, all Year 6 boys who are currently ensemble members of a Junior School ensemble are invited to attend an open rehearsal in the Senior School in Week 5. This will enable your son to meet the conductor of the ensemble he is eligible for next year, be introduced to other members, and experience being part of a Senior School ensemble rehearsal before he enters Year 7. I am hoping this experience reduces any potential anxiety for your son, and in addition allows him to become excited about the opportunities which lie ahead for him next year. I have included the rehearsal dates below for your reference. A note with all details will be sent home next week.

Year 2 Strings Concert Year 2 parents are invited to a concert to showcase their sons’ development and progress on their instruments this year as part of the Year 2 Strings program. Chess News October 19 and 20 marked the end of the 2019 chess season with the Queensland Interschool State Chess Finals at St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace. The Chess First Team (Junior School) consisting of Jett Heffernan, Theo Yevdokimov, Peter Barac and Lachlan Haller represented the School at this event. 40 schools from throughout Queensland took part in the primary school division. The boys played 6 games across 2 days in what was a long and challenging weekend of chess. At the end of the weekend they won 12 points from a possible 24 across the 6 rounds, placing mid-field. They were also the best performing Toowoomba team from the 6 in attendance. Each of the boys contributed to the points total with at least 2 wins each. Theo Yevdokimov was our best performer with 4 wins and a draw. The level of competition on display at this event was incredibly high and I am very proud of all of the boys for their efforts. My thanks must also go to Mrs Jan Heffernan who assisted with supervision on the weekend.

Night of Notables The Year 6 Big Thinking Project (BTP) group will be holding the annual “Night of Notables” on Thursday 7 November. The students have been researching famous Australian authors throughout Term 3. During the “Night of Notables”, the students adopt the persona of their famous Australian and are required to answer any questions presented to them as this person. They have also created display boards and tables to best represent the lives and achievements of their chosen person. You are invited to join us for the evening. Tea/ coffee and light refreshments will be served. The event will be held in the Junior School Hall, commencing at 6.00pm. Please RSVP to the front office by Thursday 31 October, 2019 to assist with catering.

Sports News Summer Sport Captains Congratulations to the following boys who have been chosen as the Captain of their respective sporting teams for Term 4. Volleyball Alex Denman Touch Ryan Williams Athletics Last Friday, our Track and Field season continued with a GPS pre-meet at Nudgee College. The boys enjoyed the atmosphere of competing against other schools and some fine performances were recorded. We are now looking forward to the GPS Championships on 31 October. Staff v Students Football match Last Wednesday, the annual Staff v Students football match took place. Divided into quarters, all Year 6 boys had the opportunity to display their talent against the teachers. Early in the fourth quarter the Year 6 boys took a one goal advantage after sensational goals to Will Ivory, Archie Beckwith and Ezra Adames (2). A tiring staff team mustered their energy and were able to sneak home with a 5-4 win. A relieved yet aching teaching team was able to hold their heads high the next day. Well done to the students on a match that was the closest in recent memory.

Year 6 boys had a lot of possession. Our Prep boys had great fun cheering on

the Year 6 boys and teachers. Term 4 Sport Training for Interschool sport in Term 4 continues each week. Boys should bring the appropriate equipment for their chosen sport in Term 4. Draws will be placed on the sports portal when they are finalised by Toowoomba Primary School Sport. Swimming Swimming for the boys in Prep to Year 3 continues and will conclude at the end of Week 7. The Aquatic Centre staff will reassess the boys’ swimming ability again this term. Learn to Swim days and times will be the same as last term. Swimming lessons will commence in Week 5 for boys in Year 4 - 6. These lessons will take place in regular Physical Education class time. Boys should ensure they have TGS togs, towel and swimming cap for these classes. Later in the term, boys in Years 4 and 5 will have swimming trials in preparation for the annual swimming carnival of 2020. More information about the trials will be conveyed to the boys closer to the date.

Prep and Year 1 Gymnastics Prep and Year 1 classes travel by bus to All Stars Gymnastics for their weekly Friday sport this term. This is an exciting opportunity for the boys and one which should be very beneficial to their athletic development. All Stars will design the program and provide the instructors each week.

Junior Blasters and Master Blasters The 2019 Junior Blasters and Master Blasters cricket program commences next Monday. TGS boys will meet at Sails and move together to the ovals to participate. The first week will be held on Barbour Oval and will continue on Mills Oval for each subsequent session. Boys from the 2020 1st XI squad will be assisting the boys develop their skill levels.

Year 5 Excursion to the Queensland Museum and Sparklab

Queensland Museum and Sparklab Report On Monday 14 of October, all of Year 5 travelled to the Queensland Museum and Sparklab. We had a wonderful time. Our favourite exhibit was Sparklab. Sparklab featured cool interactive activities. They included: lifting, bridge building, and lots of imagination. Then we transitioned up to the top floor. We saw lots of species of birds, varieties of fish, live snakes, giant burrowing cockroaches and even stick insects. We then migrated to the 3rd floor. We saw lots of fossilised plants and animals, a giant fossil of the Muttaburrasaurus and even a replica of a space shuttle. We then ventured over to Southbank, eating lunch and having fun at a pretty awesome park.Then it was unfortunately time to go home. We had a long bus ride home and I am sure everyone was tired when they got back to Toowoomba. By Henry Thurbin (5S) Queensland Museum and Sparklab Report On the 14th of October, the Year 5 classes adventured to South Bank in Brisbane to visit the Queensland Museum but more specifically, the Sparklab. When we entered the Sparklab we were overwhelmed by the number of Science related activities you could participate in. There was everything from electrical circuits, bridge building, aerodynamics and even sound machines. It was sad to leave but after the Sparklab we explored the Museum. We saw the DNA and history of skeletons and fossils. I particularly enjoyed looking at the spaceship replica. After the Museum we headed to Southbank to enjoy a delicious lunch, go on walks and play on the playground to burn off some energy. We eventually had to go home with some of us playing Uno on the bus while others chatted to each other and some relaxed. We all had one thing in common, we were all tired after a big day. By Julian Magree (5L) Queensland Museum and Sparklab Report On the 14th of October, Year 5 went to the Brisbane Museum and Sparklab. When we got to the Museum we had some morning tea. Then we went to the Sparklab. It was made for us to touch and work out why certain things cause different reactions. Everyone enjoyed the Sparklab. We spent 2 hours in there having lots of fun. We then went to the Science Bar to watch some chemical experiments take place, it was so interesting! When we left the Sparklab I could tell everyone was disappointed to leave. Next, we went up the stairs to look at the animals, they were fantastic! People enjoyed watching a sea movie. They explained what animals existed and the history of them. We then went downstairs to look at the fossilised dinosaurs and reptiles. People were more interested in the computers that showed what the extinct animals and reptiles looked like. We weren’t allowed to touch the fossils. Then it was time to go. Everyone was sad to leave, but we all enjoyed the excursion. By Harrison Brown (5L)

Raffle tickets to win the wheelbarrow and possible other goodies are available via the Parent Portal. Tickets are drawn the following week after the Twilight Concert. Pizzas are available for pre-order on the Parent Portal. Pick up will begin from 5:30pm at The Pavilion and finish just prior to the Twilight Concert commencing. These are supplied by Urban Pizza Company and Pizza Capers. Varieties are Meat Lovers, Hawaiian, Vegetarian and Supreme. They are the 6 slice size and will sell for $15. GF is available for no extra cost but you will need to message me for that special order. Garlic Bread is available for $4 (NO GF available sorry).
