Issue 1, August 2019

Dear Edison Parents, Guardians, and Students, On behalf of the administration and staff at Edison Middle School, I want to

welcome you back to a new school year. We look forward to the return of students, and we want to send a special welcome to our sixth graders and their families – we are glad you are here and joining the Edison Family!

I am proud to say that I have spent my entire career, 25 years, in the Sioux Falls School District. The SFSD does a wonderful job concentrating on the entire child and fosters a well-rounded student through meeting their academic, social, and emotional needs. At Edison Middle School, we focus on creating a sense of commu-nity and collaboration while fostering the student’s sense of exploration through academics and co-curricular activities. We look forward to building on those oppor-tunities by continuing to provide all students with outstanding academic and co-curricular opportunities.

For new families or sixth grade parents/guardians who are not familiar with Edison Middle School, our mascot is the CATS. Each one of the teams, usually about 110-120 students per team, is named after a CAT. We have a day set aside called Catapult Day/CATS Rally for all sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students. This is a one-day event to take care of all the pre-school paperwork, etc. Parents/guardians and their students have been assigned times throughout the day in which they should attend. The team times to meet with you can’t be adjusted. This year our Cat-apult Day/CATS Rally is Monday, August 19th from 12:00pm, to the last session for seventh grade concluding at 8:15pm.

By attending this event, you should be able to get everything you need to ensure a smooth start to your child’s school year including the opportunity to meet with your student’s team of teachers. Please make every effort to attend the ses-sion with your family. The session starting times vary depending on grade and alpha of the last name. (See attached handout)

You should plan to spend approximately an hour to complete everything, if you have submitted your online registration before you come to Edison, in addition to the time to meet with your team.

All registration activities will be held in the Edison gym and cafeteria on the first floor. Please use the NORTH doors by the parking lot to enter the building. If a parent/guardian is unable to accompany students on August 19th to Catapult Day/CATS Rally, the parent/guardian must have their online registration submitted no later than Wednesday, August 21st as the first day of school is Thursday, August 22nd.

The beginning of the new school year is a time of excitement and renewal – a time of new goals and possibilities. We also recognize that the new school year can be a time of uncertainty. We hope this newsletter and the upcoming events will alle-viate some of those uncertainties. Please don’t hesitate to call (367-7643), email, or stop by, if you have any questions or concerns. We will see you soon!

. ..PRIMARY HOUSEHOLD PARENTS- please log into the Parent Portal (Infinite Campus) at http://

parentview.sf.k12.sd.us to complete the Annual Information Update (Online Registration) for each of your students. This must be

done PRIOR to Edison’s Catapult Day/Open House on August 19th. If you have never logged into the Parent Portal, please call the

Office at 367-7643 to create a parent account. If you do not have access to a computer, computers will be available in the office from

8:00am to 4pm Monday through Friday.

...REPORTING AN ABSENCE – If a student will be absent for any reason, a parent/guardian must call the office at 367-7643

or email [email protected] by 8:45am.

...PICKING UP STUDENTS BEFORE THE SCHOOL DAY IS OVER – A parent/guardian is required to call the office at 367-7643

or email [email protected] with requests for students to leave early. Please notify the office by 8:45am so that stu-

dents can receive dismissal passes when morning announcements begin at 8:55am. This prevents disrupting the classrooms during

the school day. Students are required to sign out and remain in the office until a parent, guardian, or emergency contact arrives in

the office to pick up the student.

...DROPPING OFF STUDENTS LATE/TARDY STUDENTS – A parent/guardian is required to call the office at 367-7643, email

[email protected], or send a note with the student for late drop-offs; otherwise, students will be marked tardy. Af-

ter the student is tardy three times without notification or a doctor’s note, the student will serve a lunch detention. The student will

continue to serve a lunch detention for each day the student is tardy thereafter. We encourage students to return from medical ap-

pointments with a doctor’s note. Students must sign in and receive a pass from the office before going to class.

tips from the office

How quickly a year flies by! It is hard to believe yet another school year is wrapping

up and that it has been a year since a task force of 30 Sioux Falls taxpayers outlined a construction plan

for the future of Sioux Falls Public Schools!

The summer months are traditionally a busy time for maintenance and construction work in

schools. With students and staff on summer break, custodial crews and contractors have the freedom

to complete their work without noise and construction dust impacting learning. This summer, howev-

er, things are being “throttled up” even more than normal!

Dirt work, footings, and foundation structures are on the “to do” list for two new schools that were overwhelmingly

approved by voters in the $190 Million bond election last September. Thomas Jefferson High School will begin taking shape in

the northwest corner of Sioux Falls, not far from the Career and Technical Education Academy near Madison St. & I-29. On the

other side of town, similar work will begin on Ben Reifel Middle School, just east of Highway 11 and north of 41st Street. Both

schools are set to open in the Fall of 2021.

These two flagship projects define the exciting growth that continues in Sioux Falls and the commitment of residents

who believe in providing a high-quality education for all students. Another large project taking place this summer and sched-

uled to be ready by fall will increase space for the popular music program at Memorial Middle School.

Support of the bond also puts a new elementary school on the docket for 2024 and it makes improvements to 13 oth-

er existing buildings; including finalizing our work on entrance redesigns at two schools for improved safety and security and

adding classrooms, gym space, and music and art rooms at several elementary schools.

This work would not be possible without the support of our community. As your superintendent, I am grateful to

know that Sioux Falls appreciates the value of investing in children. Progressive decisions that support public education result

in a more productive workforce and a more welcoming community for all.

Catapult Day/CATS Rally is an opportunity for you to give us information, to meet the teachers, and to hear about your child’s classes all in one day. You will receive instructions this summer about completing the Annual Online Registration* process. If this is done be-fore August 19th, your time at Catapult Day will be expedited. Once the Annual Online Registration is submitted, your child will receive his/her schedule, and you will be directed to the team’s CATS Rally location.

During your time at Catapult Day, you will also have your child’s picture taken, get busing information, put money in lunch accounts, gather information about the YMCA’s After School Program, have the opportunity to learn about our PTO, buy spirit wear, buy a year-book, and learn about 7th/8th grade athletics.

While the Catapult Day activities are an open house format, the CATS Rally sessions are specifically scheduled times. During these sessions, you will meet your child’s teachers and find out about the classes that s/he will be taking this year, as well as learn about your child’s team.

While we know that parking will always be an issue, we encourage you to consider walking or biking if you are close enough to Edison. The following schedule is set up to alleviate some of the parking issues. If you are not able to attend during your scheduled grade level time, please plan on attending during the other scheduled grade level time.

NEW family to Sioux Falls and/or Edison Middle School?

Is your child going to be in 7th or 8th grade?

Then…

Page 6: Edison Echo August 2019 - Sioux Falls School District · Issue 1, August 2019 Dear Edison Parents, Guardians, and Students, On behalf of the administration and staff at Edison Middle

Welcome back to school! The 2019-20 academic year is going to be a great one at Edison Middle School, with your help. As a parent (or grandparent, aunt, uncle, guardian, etc) of an Edison stu-dent, you are automatically a member of the PTO and a valuable part of this organization of people who support our school.

Why do I need to get involved?

Family involvement at school is very rewarding and im-portant to the success of your child. The PTO needs your voice and commitment in order to provide enriching events and opportunities to our students.

What do we do?

The Edison PTO sponsors and organizes many wonderful events throughout the school year. These include assist-ing with the upcoming Catapult Day, sponsoring school assemblies, “Chill on the Hill”, the End of the Year Fifth Grade party, teacher appreciation week and conference meals. We also use money raised from donations and fundraisers to purchase items for the school and support our teachers. A few examples include the Elkay Water filling stations, choir risers, a projector and screen for the gym, landscaping improvements, teacher lounge updates, auditorium lighting and sound updates and benches for the courtyard.

Does it cost to join?

No, there are no membership fees. However, in order to fund the many events at school, we do accept dona-tions! We will also be hosting the Edison Color-A-Thon Fun Run/Walk Friday, October 4th and catalog sales in late fall. Funds raised will help enrich our student’s learn-ing experiences.

When are the meetings?

Mark your calendars for the third Wednesday of the month at 12 noon in the school office conference room. All are welcome. Just come!

How do I learn more?

Please feel free to contact us at [email protected]. You can also visit our web-site at https://edisonsf.org. Again, on behalf of the Edison PTO, welcome to school, we are looking forward to a great year.

Binders Needed…

Every year we have students that are unable to purchase binders and try to

unsuccessfully organize themselves in other ways. We try to help provide stu-

dents with binders that cannot afford binders and need one.

We can always use more zipper binders to help our students in being more

successful. If you would feel the urge to help some of our less fortunate stu-

dents out, we would appreciate donations of binders to the Counseling Cen-

ter. OTHER school supplies are also accepted including pens, pencils, folders,

pencil pouches, notebooks, composition books, etc.
