Encounters with Canada (EWC) is our Country’s largest and foremost youth forum! Every week of the

school year, 120 to 148 teens from across Canada (ages 14 to 17) travel to Ottawa. There they discover

their country through each other, learn about Canadian institutions, meet famous and accomplished Ca-

nadians, explore exciting new career options, develop their civic leadership skills and live an extraordinary

bilingual experience. Over 92, 000 youth have lived the EWC experience, to date!

This school year, École Sir John Franklin High School sent seven students to take part in this incredible

opportunity. Each student chose a date and took part in a specific theme. In total there are 12 different

themes to choose from. For more information on this program go to www.ewc-rdc.ca.

Two of our students, Etienne Pasini and Gavin Dwyer have already gone to their respective week-long fo-

rums. This month we look forward to sending Brandon Pellerin, Taylor Rein, Rana Jalil Aga, Trisa Ngo and

Kathleen Gordon. Sir John is happy to offer this great opportunity to our students annually. The amount of

students that can be sent differs from year to year. This year’s group is one of the largest thus far.

counters) snowboarding in Quebec.

The week I went down to Encounters was probably the best week I have ever had. It’s incredible how just one week made such an im-pact on my life. Encounters with Canada is a great opportunity to meet new people from across the Country. Every day was a new ad-venture. I had the opportunity to go the Parliament Building, numer-ous formal events, as well as, a day of snowboarding in Quebec. I am extremely grateful to have been given the opportunity to be a part of such a great program. I highly recommend the Encounters with Cana-da Youth Forum experience in the Sports & Fitness theme. It truly was an experience of a lifetime.

This year’s campaign was a huge success at Sir John. We

received over 100 entries at the school alone! One entry

was selected to go into the big draw held in Fort Smith.

This year’s selected entry was written by our Grade 9

French Immersion student, Gavin Dwyer. His nomination

was for Mr. Bill Burlington.

Gavin wrote:

“Bill Burlington, or as we like to call him, Burly, has made a

huge impact in my life. He is the man I look up to. Because

of Burly I have developed such a positive and strong atti-

tude. After learning all of the amazing things that Bill has

taught me I now want to go out and strive for as much suc-

cess as I can. Thank you Bill Burlington for being such an

amazing teacher.”

On Tuesday, February 19th, 2013 I went to Bliss Lake to take part in the

Bliss Lake Trapper’s Camp, which ran for four days. While I was there I was

very inspired by the two elders that taught us about the land and basic land

survival skills. We took part in many cultural activities, learned how to set a

fish net under the ice, fillet a fish, cut wood to supply heat to our cabins an

how to safely set traps. It was a privilege to be able to set traps on one of

the elders family trap lines that has been in his family for many genera-

tions. I really enjoyed my time at Bliss Lake and was honoured to have

been a part of such a wonderful experience. Thank you Mrs. Cleary and Mr.

Johnston for the opportunity. And thank you to the volunteers for making

the camp run so smoothly.
